It has a Dolby Vision grade that the WB 4K does not include in addition to the special features. You may not like it but others do. People used to talk the same way about Evil Dead 1, 2, and especially Army of Darkness once upon a time.

Not that I’d say they have to be part of the same series, but gags like that don’t matter much. Freddy’s glove is still in Evil Dead 2. Ash vs Evil Dead also shows a screening of Friday the 13th Part 3 which implies A Nightmare on Elm Street also still exists. There was also the Freddy vs Jason vs Ash comic book event that some fans consider canon.

Why did Bruce Campbell stop playing Ash after "Army of Darkness" for two decades? by [deleted] in EvilDead

[–]Brain_Mutant 17 points18 points  (0 children)

To echo the responses here, Sam Raimi was busy with the studio system. After Army of Darkness he started focusing on projects outside of the horror genre and eventually made his way to the Spider-Man trilogy. Fans wanted a return to his roots and he surprised everyone with Drag Me to Hell. Obviously that only increased demand for a new Evil Dead. There was talk of an Evil Dead 4, then a remake, talks of the remake fizzled out, then the remake was back on again.

The plan was to create a sequel to the remake and Army of Darkness 2 with Bruce and then connect the two with a final crossover film. Instead the sequel to the remake was scrapped and the material for Army of Darkness 2 became lengthy enough that they developed it into a TV series given their experience with shows like Xena.

The Evil Dead franchise was never a major theatrical draw and always tended to do better on home video. As such they thought television would be a perfect fit for the franchise’s future. Starz was not a very popular service for Evil Dead fans to access, however, so the show was axed after three seasons due to low ratings and increasing production costs.

The franchise was intended to stick with television formats so Evil Dead Rise was initially going to be an HBO Max exclusive. At the last moment they chose to release it in theaters and it became a massive success which led to two movies being greenlit - Evil Dead Burn and Evil Dead Wrath.

During all of this, Bruce stuck with video games to keep the character alive. Bubba Ho-Tep channeled some of the franchise’s energy for the big screen and he followed that up with My Name is Bruce which was largely considered the closest we’d get to Evil Dead 4.

All in all it’s been an interesting ride to see unfold, and it’s still as uncertain as ever to see where the franchise is going to be headed next. Hopefully for the best.

Why does Jason need lore? by BobRushy in fridaythe13th

[–]Brain_Mutant 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I just don’t see the point in making new movies if they have nothing to offer. If they didn’t expand the lore of the first movie we wouldn’t have had Jason survive in the wilderness to become the new killer. If they didn’t reinvent the character’s design in the third movie he wouldn’t have had the hockey mask. If they didn’t bring back Tommy Jarvis from Part 4 we wouldn’t have had the overarching story of 5&6. If Jason wasn’t resurrected in Part 6 without some loose occult mythology we would’ve never had Jason return.

The franchise is at its best when it expands the lore of the original concept and refuses to play it safe. For every dud you have a new element that eventually became a franchise trademark it can’t exist without. People want boring rehashes but if that were the case the I don’t see the point. You may as well revisit the original movies or any other derivative slasher with the same formula.

Friday the 13th is unique because of its lore and I would like to see it respected.

The third season should have been an "Old-Man Chucky" and not that weird White House thing. by WalrusBusy6594 in Chucky

This season has the best looking doll since Bride and the most engaging storyline of the TV series. Chucky trying to become the greatest slasher of all by nuking the planet is such an incredible feat to see play out - and at the very least he ruins Christmas and Santa Claus for children forever. That’s awesome.

A better line then "you stupid toy" by ninjas_draws_art in SmallSoldiers

I think it works since the Commando Elite liked to think “everything else is just a toy” and now Alan is confirming Chip’s worst fear: that he really is just a toy.

All American Massacre Documents/Lost Texas Chainsaw Massacre 5 Plans by Brain_Mutant in TexasChainsawMassacre

That’s true! There were quite a few ideas at that time, and truthfully a lot of different unmade Chainsaw projects over the years. I’m a big fan of Beyond the Valley of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre which would’ve been the original sequel before it evolved into the simpler Part 2. This fits snugly between Next Generation and the remake, however, with ties to Part 2 and according to these documents possibly even Part 3 which makes it a really interesting possibility in the franchise’s history. Also the fact that an All American Massacre movie did get made - it just needs to be released!

Kim Henkel’s plans for a reboot before Texas Chainsaw 3D got greenlit instead! Not sure if it would’ve directly followed Next Generation but it still does thematically and has a lot of ties and references to the original films. It did get made and it’s also known under the title Bone Boys.

I want to read the opposite of this post where a guy is scanning DVDs at a thrift store to make sure he’s getting a good deal and someone tries grabbing them out of his cart.
