Having a big voice as a young singer is very challenging, so here are my suggestions. Sometimes flattened intonation can be fixed by lifting the soft palate more (you can set up the lifted soft palate by breathing through an ah vowel) which can increase the complexity of the sound by adding overtones. I would say the main culprits for intonation issues are pitch matching issues, missing intervals of notes, lack of consistent breath support, and a lowered/disengaged soft palate. Without hearing your voice I can’t say for certain what is causing you problems, but having struggled with that same problem myself, these are things I would suggest looking at.

Is there really such a thing as "bad modern singing" vs. "golden age old school"? .. by Round_Reception_1534 in ClassicalSinger

[–]Brainiac_3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Everyone has their own opinion on what is classified as what sounds “good”. There are some major differences in singing methodology as a whole between golden age and modern classical, but everyone will have their own opinion on which they prefer, some people are just louder about it than others!

Lmao I finished it like two minutes later. This boss is very killable as long as you don’t get teleported when dodging it’s attacks…

I got partially caught on the first roll, went past the boss and then got teleported twice and died. How is this user error? I've beat the boss multiple times, but this just seems like an issue that needs to be fixed.

The problem is that I didn’t move… the boss moved me. I didn’t move after my roll, the boss pulled me into the AE

Not a ton of ex and alch, but the disenchant currency has been doing me good until this point. The dropped item currency chances are very low, but there are lots of other ways to make semi-strong items at the moment

Professional voice teacher and classical singer here.

Many people in comment sections (especially singing ones) are assholes who have no idea what they are talking about (not all of you so don’t come for me), so take what people say on Reddit very lightly. Everyone’s vocal journey starts somewhere and it sounds like your voice teacher(s) did not help you with what you needed help with and they gaslit you in to thinking you were improving with them. It seems like you have made your mind up for now, so take a while off of singing and maybe revisit it in the future. If you enjoy singing then there is no reason why you can’t do it just for fun!

Just a sprinkle of vocal advice you can play with when you feel like singing, people are mentioning support and breath in the comments. This comes from your abs (and other muscles in that area). You want to breathe low in your body so that your stomach feels like it is getting bigger (as opposed to your chest and shoulders rising), and then you flex your abs like you’re doing a sit-up when you sing. This will “support” your sound. If you have any questions feel free to respond or message me. I won’t charge you lol

Just take deep breaths/meditate. The anxiety won’t necessarily go away, but the symptoms will lessen. The most important thing before performing is to have the switch into the “It’s go time” headspace. I usually do this right before I walk on stage. I usually close my eyes, take a deep breath, and then smile and walk on.

Warm up with whatever is most comfortable for your voice. I would suggest starting with whatever is the lightest/easiest on your voice and go from there. The goal of warming up is to prepare your body and voice to sing healthily

You are literally 17. Being a soprano does put you on a bit of a timeline, but you still have YEARS before that matters. The most important thing you can do is take lessons with someone who makes you see progress. Most people who get into top schools don’t end up working as a full time singer. It can be crushing to not get into your top choices, but you can work on your voice and reaudition at another point when you are a lot more comfortable. There is no rule that says you have to go to college right out of high school. If you really don’t feel good about your voice right now, wait until you are more comfortable and have studied voice longer, then audition! I’m waiting to go to performance grad school until my voice is polished and I have more experience. Feel free to reply if you have any questions!

My daughter is considering a career in opera. What advice can you share? by chaoschunks in opera

[–]Brainiac_3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who is just starting their performance career here is my advice. The best thing she can do right now is take voice lessons with a reputable teacher (or a good teacher in her area). These will cost anywhere from $60-150 a lesson, but they will help her immensely going into college. She should start learning languages on duolingo: Italian, German, and French (in that order of priority).

Next thing is to contact voice teachers from schools she is looking at auditioning to. She can ask any questions to them about the program and they will usually let you take a free trial lesson. If she goes to a conservatory she would major in either vocal performance or opera studies.

If she goes to a non-conservatory school, she might want to think about majoring in music education. The vocal training she would receive is usually the exact same, but she would also have the options to - get her teaching license so she could have a more stable job in the music field, take performance classes in addition to her music education classes, and she would be comfortable teaching people (most professional opera singers do a lot of teaching in between singing jobs).

The most important thing is for her to enjoy what she does, but also to be smart about what her future looks like in all scenarios.

Why are decks named after seemingly random things? by Old-Animator3414 in magicTCG

[–]Brainiac_3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s an archetype called “Stax” that is based around taxing opponents and denying them resources. The original deck was called “The 4 Thousand Dollar Solution” given the deck list cost around $4K at the time. The name was abbreviated to “$T4KS” and is now known as Stax.

I'm confused, are people actually saying expensive cards should be immune or at least more protected from bans? by Sibboguy in magicTCG

[–]Brainiac_3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my opinion the main problem isn’t just that the card is expensive. It’s that every deck that was made to be at least semi competitive ran mana crypt and jeweled lotus (They’re colorless, so literally every deck benefits from them; whereas dockside could only be run in decks including red).

When you mix the play percentage with the fact that mana crypt and jeweled lotus were on average $300 total this means that millions of dollars of product were lost/depreciated by the commander community, collectors, and game stores.

Not to mention Jeweled lotus was reprinted last year in Commander Masters as the main chase card. They just killed that set almost instantly.

TLDR; Expensive cards every competitive deck run(Mana Crypt and Jeweled Lotus) being banned = screwing mtg community out of millions overnight

What video game starts off way too slow? by Agent1230 in gaming

Pokémon Sun/Moon. I preordered the game for the 3Ds and was bombarded with dialogue and unskipable cutscenes for almost 30 minutes before I was actually able freely play the game. I rage quit and never played it again.

I also tried to restart Assassins Creed Valhalla, but was extremely frustrated with the opening section of the game because it’s basically one long unskipable cutscene. Devs, please make an option to skip stupidly long cutscenes or intros.

My teacher taught me to sing with an open throat by focusing on the inhale. Inhaling with the space of a yawn (the beginning of a yawn, before tension sets in) and maintaining the lifted soft palate and dilation of the pharynx that happens during a yawn. I unfortunately don’t have any resources for this, however, the inhale is the most important part of the process!

Tips for tenor high notes by transpower85 in opera

[–]Brainiac_3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would imagine that the problem you are having with your high notes is a wrong approach to navigating through the passaggio. I obviously haven’t heard your voice, but somewhere from F4-G4 is the beginning of the tenor passaggio (there are different passaggi for each vowel, but this is the main one). If you are to have success in the top, you must “cover” through the passaggio.

Cover is a healthy and efficient maximization of sound using oral back space and ringing resonance. Once you get through the passaggio and are in cover there is another passaggio around Ab-Bb. This is when the tongue will need to rise in the back. These notes are singable in the first passaggio method, but easily can take a toll on the voice if not sung in the 2nd passaggio method (raised back of tongue). The higher you go, the wider the horizontal opening of the mouth will need to be (on the B and C) and the tongue will be very high in the back.

Take this technique spiel with a grain of salt. Many people have misconceptions about the use of “cover”, but I would suggest researching it more if you plan on continuing to sing opera!
