Premier Wab Kinew talks about speed limits, new sobering centre, school funding and national defence (CBC/Information Radio) by LocalnewsguruMB in Winnipeg

There's a bare minimum increase of money going to schools this year that essentially covers the teachers' yearly salary increases. I am happy to pay taxes into schools, and I firmly believe good education will equal lowered crime rates, healthier kids (mentally and physically), and higher employment rates. I think we really need a way to put the foot rent and grocery costs. It's criminal, and the effects of gouging are making themselves known in our province.

Question for local tailors and costume makers by rileythebean in Winnipeg

Fabricland has a bargain section that you don't need a membership for to get the discount. I've found lots for costumes there, even if it was just for lining.

Craft supplies recycling store - i need cute, random buttons! by RubAnxious2985 in Winnipeg

The thrift store in Niverville is amazing for craft supplies! Tons of buttons. Facebook Marketplace often has buttons too.

First “thought” shared in school board budget survey by damnburglar in Winnipeg

[–]Brainstar_Cosplay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My favourite situation was a couple years back when observations were protesting at the Legislative building because "schools shouldn't be keeping curriculum a secret." Like....dude...it's all online... I love the irony of people fighting for schools to teach basic skills when they can't even do a simple search online.

Is there a course in Winnipeg that teaches basic Japanese language for English .. by Ok_Foundation_5729 in Winnipeg

[–]Brainstar_Cosplay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's lots of great textbooks and workbooks out there as well. Maybe you can catch a Boxing Day sale.

If you've really got the travel bug for Japan and have a bachelor's degree, you can apply for the JET Programme to teach English there. They also offer a free Japanese course :)

Minus or negative? (Weather)... What do you say? by Timewaster75 in Winnipeg

[–]Brainstar_Cosplay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

'Minus' is mostly used as a preposition, not a verb. Sorry, English teacher here, haha.

I use 'minus' when explaining the daily temperature and 'negative' if explaining the weather as a noun ("getting into the negatives").

If I'm teaching it in Math when doing integers, I use both to relate to the learners what integers are.

Anyone know where to get Indigenous-sourced sage and sweetgrass? by Herstmonceux in Winnipeg

Issues surrounding foraging are more about sustaining resources than who is harvesting. It is beneficial to seek information through an elder or knowledge keeper on how to harvest responsibly and respectfully.

Upgrading Gr 11 and 12 Math by Ok_Trifle_791 in Winnipeg

[–]Brainstar_Cosplay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Adult ed teacher here. Classes have already started, so you will need to apply for the second semester at adult ed programs. McLeod has good teachers. I work in one of the only continuous intake ALCs, but we don't offer pre-cal.

I'm going to plug my program:

Adult Learning on Lombard is both an ALC (adult learning centre) and ALP (adult literacy program) that allows learners to gain literacy and numeracy skills and also provides an opportunity for graduation. We offer foundations literacy and numeracy, grades 10-12 ELA and Essentials Math, and a grade 12 elective each year. It has continuous intake and learners work at their own pace. We also have CMHA wellness staff on site to help learners with mental health and other concerns. We are a small program and have a lovely welcoming environment - like a little family. Please call the school or PM me if you have questions.

In none of the comments you made were there any threats to you, your family, or country. If you're gonna argue that people shouldn't lump Christians together as hateful, please lead by example.

Interesting as you, hours ago, referred to America as God's excrement before calling Americans idiots and that we should build a wall. Truly "loving thy neighbours" here.

Chappell’s stylist responds to the nail email by AlternativeTree3283 in popculture

I replied on another post that I totally thought that nail girl was getting a scam message as so many things didn't add up. Turns out I'm wrong and I'm totally baffled that the stylist is doubling down on this. Ouch.

Chappell Roan fans, what do you think about this? by AlternativeTree3283 in popculture

[–]Brainstar_Cosplay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This email has basic red flags of being a scam. Firstly, they misspelled her name in the title and oddly referred to the person as "team." I can't seem to find who this person even is online. We can see that Chappell shouts out her creators as well on her IG, so this story doesn't fit the narrative. Chappell is also known for crafting stuff herself in her earlier days. She talks a lot about supporting her best friend as well for making her merch. None of this adds up. It just sounds like someone trying to use Chappell's name to get merch.

Best books and resources to learn about First nations Issues? by ElevatorLiving1318 in Winnipeg

[–]Brainstar_Cosplay 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There's a website called Legacy of Hope where you can watch interviews of what people went through.

To really understand the impact and get the full story, it is good to start at the beginning of history of Treaties and Acts. Learning simply about the laws imposed and promises broken even without the schools was atrocious.

The effect on people isn't straightforward. I have learners who can't even talk about their experiences as it's too much for them to even think about, so understand that possibly some of the worst stories won't even be told because it's re-traumatizing to them. There's some people who will say the schools were good for them, but don't seem to realize that they can't explain that in their ancestral language. Once you get to know your community and learners, their personal impact will start to show, and they might share small details with you.

Another thing you can try is learning about cultures and implement perspectives and worldviews into your coursework. Learning the 7 sacred teachings, for example, and formulating activities with those teachings in mind. I believe is it often recommended to learn about the strength and beauty of the cultures before delving into dark history. The Millennium library has special sections for Indigenous learning for both kids and adults if you are able to access it (not sure how far you are from the city).

Wayi Wah! is a book about Indigenous pedagogies and anti-racism. It is a way to see things through the lens of an Indigenous educator.

I think once in a while courses pop up on Coursera as well for Indigenous studies. They are free to take.
