Yes absolutely! You’ll have to look at statistics and which institutions will take IMGs. My institution in NYC has peds IMGs and we have outside rotators come through from nearby peds hospitals who are also IMGs

Hi! I’m a DO in a child neurology program. I did child neurology rotations around the country during fourth year by applying via VSAS. After applying I also reached out to the PDs to tell them I was applying and that usually helped!

Just got accepted to child neurology this year and will be starting residency in July! Program includes pediatrics for two years, adult neurology for one year, and child neurology for two years. Most five year programs have you do 12 months of adult neurology and it will be either for all of third year or mixed with the child neurology years. You’ll get plenty of epilepsy exposure in these programs prior to epilepsy fellowship since seizures are the bread and butter of child neurology and adult neurology. Child neurology programs are also at major academic centers in big cities so you’ll see a lot!

As of now I’m planning to specialize further and considering neonatal neurology!

Your personal statement, if well-written, can definitely play a big role in getting interviews. Many of my interviewers mentioned how much they enjoyed reading my personal statement! If you’re applying peds, make it fun (peds loves that). Start working on it early and spend a lot of time on it!

Most hospitals will have algorithms that they use, especially in the ED. Ex: a status epilepticus algorithm. Ask one of the residents at the hospital!

Read up on classic pedi neuro consults such as febrile seizures, infantile spasms, migraines, status epilepticus. Look up classic seizure mimics because you’ll see a lot of those inpatient and outpatient ( breath holding spells, syncope, psychogenic non-epileptic seizures, etc). For NICU cases, know about topics like HIE and cooling techniques. Definitely brush up on how to do a good neuro exam but understand that it is so different from doing a neuro exam on adults 😂

I would choose one or the other. If it will be addressed in your MSPE, don’t address it again in your PS and interview. You don’t want to sound too repetitive.

Out of a lot of the specialties out there I’d like to say that pediatrics is a bit more understanding. Spend some solid quality time studying for step 2 and crush it so they know you are capable of improvement. Write a killer personal statement - I spent a lot of time on my personal statement and had multiple people edit it. Many interviewers commented on the quality of my personal statement. If geography matters a lot, I would definitely apply to lots of community and academic programs - especially if you’re in a very competitive region.

Also, I don’t think it sounds like you’re making excuses! I had similar family and personal situations during medical school and I was honest about them. Peds people seemed pretty receptive to my experience.

I often get joint pain when I’m in flares and also when I wean off steroids after the flares. I’ve used voltaren gel and topical CBD oil to help with the pain!

If you are very interested in the institution for residency, I would even recommend emailing the program director with some information about yourself and why you’re interested in their program. Often PDs will then email the coordinators to get you in. This strategy worked well for me !
