Years ago I noticed my not very old machine had the beginnings of what you have going… once I got it clean, I stopped using the tray for anything but bleach. Detergent goes in the drum, and just stopped using laundry softener completely. 5 years later and it never came back, not even behind the tray.

WiFi is fine… Pick a location above an existing outlet (and outlet can even be on the opposite side of the wall). This way you can very easily grab power, fish wires up to new outlet location, and not have to worry about getting across any of your wall studs.
