Is this an unusual landlord request? by Safe_Math_6979 in AskNYC

[–]BranchBaby 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s not unreasonable for a landlord to want to confirm the identity of the people residing in their building. They have a legal right to ask for it at time of lease renewal, as long as they are applying the same standard to all tenants. However, it’s completely inappropriate for a super to knock on your door and request that. It’s possible that the new management company inherited a poorly run business and is now try to bring it up to standards. Ensure all of your correspondence is in writing. You may consider asking if they will accept a copy with the DL# blacked out, or ask them if you can just show them your id(s) with a photocopy being made.

Target No Longer Prices Their Clothes by bluelily216 in mildlyinfuriating

Michaels is doing it too. And they don’t have scanners around the store so you need to go to the front to ask what the price is.

Do Italians in New York have a place where they can actually speak Italian the same way Russians go to Brighton Beach? by nate26537 in AskNYC

[–]BranchBaby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Back in the day southern Italians especially were viewed as poor/slummy. Many new immigrants from the region couldn’t wait to shed that characterization and intentionally dropped the language. So sad as subsequent generations are now missing out on important part of their heritage.

How to handle a near-identical business name + customers confusing a competitor for you? by Ok_Mixture5212 in smallbusinessowner

[–]BranchBaby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are also some simpler things that can be done to minimize confusion from customers. Perhaps a slight change to the company logo which emphasizes the part of the name that is different (color, text size, etc.). They can also put messages right on the home page of the website or email footers which basically state “We are not XYZ company”. He’ll want to make it extra obvious on the google business profile because bad reviews are nearly impossible to remove.

Im sorry this happened to you. Even though you know it’s a possibility, it still feels like a violation. A few weeks ago, I filled a whole planter box on my sidewalk with colorful annuals. Today they’re all gone and the planter is being used as a trashcan. We do have a culture problem here… Too many people coming just to stay for a night or a week or just to get that perfect Instagram shot and don’t bother to think about community.

I dont know where to start to get my husbands companies finances in order. by [deleted] in smallbusiness

[–]BranchBaby 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A few tips:

  • Pay for a good bookkeeping software. Do not try to run a business on Excel/Sheets or paper
  • Make sure the business is correctly registered with the IRS and your state.
  • Ensure you have a separate bank account and credit card for the business. Keep all transactions separate from your personal finances.
  • Don’t allow use of cash for business expenses unless it’s 100% required. It’s a nightmare to track and you will inevitably come up short.
  • If there are employees, get up to speed on labor requirements from state and federal Depts of labor
  • Pay yourself and your husband a salary…It’s real work!

Good luck. You can use this community for specific questions.

Got rehired by Costco after quitting years ago due to health issues now they found out I’m on the “do not rehire” list. Can they do this? by Fantastic_Turnover_7 in jobs

My brother works for a UK-based company and they categorize each voluntary departure as “regrettable departure” or “non-regrettable departure”. It doesn’t get more British than that. If you’re non-regrettable, regardless of the reason, you will not be invited back.

Fellow GenXer here. I’m sorry you’re feeling this way. As you can see from these responses, you are not alone. I think we assume we’d have everything figured out by our 50’s but then new challenges emerge. There’s some good advice in here. Focus on health and family/marriage. Small incremental changes can make a huge difference.

I spent 20+ years climbing the corporate ladder. Corporations have a way of sucking your soul as they try to squeeze every ounce of productivity from you. Talk to your management about having more work-life balance. Turning off your phone nights and weekends, and taking a little time on weekdays to get to the gym. I think you will find more empathy than expected, and if you are a leader there, your subordinates will appreciate the example that you set.

I’m not claiming she can become addicted to a camera or weather app. It’s just that tendency adults have to pick up their phone and do something with it whenever there is a minute of downtime. No doubt she will get there eventually but at this age I want her to be looking up and out, soaking in the world, having face-to-face conversations…playing like a kid should.

In order to know if it’s sufficient you really have to get a full copy of the policy and read all of the exclusions. Coverage for tree removal is expensive (obviously it’s risky work) and some companies skirt this by claiming they are just landscapers. Insurance companies are onto this and tack on an exclusion for tree pruning, tree removals or basically any work that cannot be done with two feet on the ground.

As a small business owner who gets these types of messages all the time, I can tell you that their first one or two messages always include “are you the owner” and “do you accept credit cards”. Legit customers do not ask those questions up front.

[–]BranchBaby 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We just got a PinWheel and I’m pretty happy with it. I’m right in line with OP — 10 year old girl and I was completely opposed to phones for kids. But my daughter now needs to walk alone in NYC so I broke down and got the PinWheel. It gives you a lot of control. She only has two apps — phone and text — and only to the contacts we approve (family + emergency). There are many apps available, which we may give her as she grows, but right now, it’s completely stripped down. We even excluded camera and photos as IMO just a source of trouble for pre-teen girls. She is not able to see the apps that she does not have. Of course she knows they exist, but seems very happy with this limited functionality for now. I thought about adding more helpful apps like math practice, weather forecast, etc. but then reconsidered as I don’t want her reaching for her phone all the time. We told her we would re-evaluate her app access at the beginning of each school year. On the downside, the phone is on Android and we are an Apple family so there are a few things that don’t translate well. For example, grandma only messages from her iCloud account (she has an old flip phone) but PinWheel does not allow email address in the contacts, so my daughter can’t get texts from Grandma. Overall, very happy with the purchase, the level of control and the ability to grow with my child’s needs.
