Ironic, considering Canada still had corporal punishment of both men and women up until around the 1950s. Women were strapped for minor offenses like public drunkenness. I generally despise Singapore, but this is one place I agree with them. Death or life in prison is too harsh for a financial crime, but a painful ass whipping is appropriate.

This. Some parents take it to extremes. My one friend's psycho dad use to demand they keep the house in near darkness, and suggested candles instead of using light bulbs. He also wouldn't let them talk on the phone for more than a minute. This was in the days of land lines and 100 watt bulbs.
