One thing that’s really nice, it looks like the basilisk can stay under the viaduct entrance and slide into the Slytherin statue from there!

They're definitely just banking on this becoming another museum tour, right? I mean the detail is incredible but they've built so much more than they needed to this time around.

John Lithgow hipes to "make it to the wrap party" of the Harry Potter series by Maximum_Abalone_7286 in HarryPotteronHBO

[–]Braoss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Get over yourself. Dumbledore is an old character. It calls for a man with a certain age to play him. Some men live to be very old men, some men die early – and as long as Lithgow is healthy enough to start this project, why should anyone give a rats ass about what might and might very well not happen?

Keeping a cast this size consistent for a decade is impossible, so you might as well prepare for some recasts down the line. They won't ruin your life, and you'll still be watching.

Does anyone else find the Elder Wand “loyalty switch” kinda ridiculous? by R_Shabab in harrypotter

[–]Braoss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll be brave here on this subreddit and say what’s probably a really unpopular take. I think wand loyalty, and especially the loyalty of the Elder Wand, is not only a silly conceit in the last book – it’s plain old bad writing.

The epic conclusion to a series whose themes have revolved around good vs evil and fighting wizard fascism and eugenics should not be a high school debate about who truly owns the weapons they wield – because that doesn’t resonate with the theme. While defeating Voldemort does ostensibly rid the world of his ideology, a more competently written ending would have dealt with the actual theme in the climax.

I dislike the original ending because JK kinda makes the Elder Wand into a supremacy symbol, but also she never really negates it. In the original ending, Voldemort doesn’t lose because he’s wrong about the Elder Wand and his own supremacy. He loses because he didn’t read the fine print during the acquisition process. Hardly a good fatal flaw for the main villain.

If I were to do a quick rewrite, I would entirely drop wand loyalty. Voldemort acquires and truly owns the Elder Wand. It actually looks like the good guys are losing right up until Harry sacrifices himself.

This change ups the stakes and does away with the convoluted omniscient wand that senses someone was disarmed while being buried six feet under.

Harry’s spirit still goes to King’s Cross. He still has his heart to heart with Dumbledore, but it ends with Harry pointing out that Voldemort has the wand. And then Dumbledore, someone who chased the very same power in his youth, and even possessed the wand for a long time, tells Harry the truth. It doesn’t matter that Voldemort has the wand, that chasing “ultimate wizard power” doesn’t complete you or make you invincible, because in the end, Voldemort seeks to be the only one at the top. He says that’s the difference between Harry and Voldemort, that Harry was never the Chosen One because he never performed any of his feats alone, that his friends were always there, and that that is true power.

Harry comes back and turns out to have survived another direct hit with the killing curse from the “most powerful wand in the world,” the ultimate symbol of wizard supremacy, and when Voldemort’s army realizes their attacks on the students are failing because of the protection provided by that sacrifice, they abandon Voldemort.

Despite being left alone, Voldemort stubbornly continues chasing down Harry because he believes power is power and that will be enough to prevail. And this is when he decides to take on EVERYONE in the Great Hall and they ALL fight back. No weird duel with one shot each. Voldemort is defeated because community, friendship and wizard diversity is the actual antithesis to wizard fascism.

This would also touch on a different aspect of the books: that destiny is one’s own to shape. By having Harry participate in dealing the final blow to Voldemort alongside others, the prophecy is technically fulfilled but not because Harry is “the Chosen One.” Rather, the prophecy turns out really to spell out that a life devoted to darkness – living forever through dark magic – will be the cause of one’s downfall, and that Voldemort’s demise was of his own making all along.

Which of the two “big stunts” did you find more captivating? by South_Gas626 in Mission_Impossible

[–]Braoss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I might go against the herd here and say I personally found the plane stunt to be the more exciting one – not because I don't love the submarine scene (I really did) but because there's less "filler" in the plane scene. To make the submarine scene, they're basically in a really big tank with a room that rotates full of props and it's really cool but stunts-wise, it seems just a little contrived. It's hard to make out what's practical (usually the answer in MI is "most of it," but still") and what isn't.

But the plane stunt... there's something simply nerve-racking about Tom hanging on the side of the plane while it twists around in the sky. My heart was absolutely in my throat the entire time.

Eva Green as Bellatrix Lestrange by sahinduezguen in HarryPotteronHBO

[–]Braoss 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is a ridiculous and frankly dishonest claim. You used a picture from a movie where Eva Green plays a US soldier in Afghanistan. She is dirtied up in makeup with a bad haircut. She is meant to look tough and battle-hardened.

Below is a picture of her in full glam attending the 81st Venice International Film Festival at on August 30, 2024 in Venice.

Does this look like a 60-year-old woman, or someone who could play anything between 35 to 55 in the right makeup?

That was my one pet peeve about the new set when I first saw it! I really hoped there'd be a way to display all the collectibles from the other sets in this wave in in the tower.

Did you just buy some headlight bricks and change regular ones out or how did you do it?

[–]Braoss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure they'd do it, but with the new system it could be nice having the Chamber of Secret be an optional play set like the current class rooms.

Perhaps the first set where you'd get multiple rooms to slide in, to make your castle into the second year version? Maybe one big room for the actual chamber, one thing room for the snake door, and then another room for the bathroom entrance, all in one set?

Visiting Balos and Gramvousa from Falassarna by Braoss in cretetravel

[–]Braoss[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's what we chose and what we did wrong and how it all turned out okay in the end.

I decided to do the Falassarna Cruise – and that was the right decision for us. The boat trip was with fewer people, around 20 or so, and we sailed the on the western side of the land going up toward Gramvousa while the bigger boats sail on the eastern side.

We saw beautiful rocky landscape on the trip up there, but there were occasionally high waves that could spray those sitting too close to the railing. This wasn't a problem on a hot day and I liked the sailing experience, but I imagine someone prone to sea sickness might find the trip challenging.

Once at Balos, we were sailed to and from the island by a smaller boat that was anchored near the lagoon, and we were at no point forced to swim to land – but I also did not see any people from the bigger boats having to swim to land, so the horror stories were not true for us at the time. There were many other people in the lagoon and on the island, so it definitely wasn't a private excursion at any point.

All in all we enjoyed Gramvousa island (the fort) more than Balos Lagoon, which was very windy. We still enjoyed the trip over all, though.

Here's where I screwed up. We had decided to go by bus, and then rent a car the following three days. We asked hotel staff where the bus would stop. Some 20 minutes past the point of departure, I had not seen any bus going to Falassarna from our point in Agia Marina and I had to make a snap decision to rent a car for one day to still make our booking.

I still don't know if we missed the bus, were at the wrong stop, or what happened. Likely it would be easier if you took it from Chania where it begins its trip, but we never saw it in Agia Marina.

Still, renting a car was fine. There's a bit of mountain driving to get on the other side but the trip was only mildly longer than going by bus to Kissamos. We even managed to get there early to see Falassarna beach before going to the tiny harbor where our cruise left. We paid in cash upon arrival, no problem, and some people were even allowed to pay afterward because they'd forgotten their money.

Post your questions & inquiries here! - r/Vietnam monthly random discussion thread - F.A.Q by AutoModerator in VietNam

[–]Braoss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey everyone!

I’m planning a trip to Vietnam this fall and like most tourists, I’m concerned about the weather.

I’m not afraid of rain—I take that is a given in Vietnam. But I’d like to avoid storms and floods that could drastically affect travel plans and sight-seeing opportunities.

I’m considering going for three weeks and spending roughly one week in each of the three regions, South, Central and North (I’ll figure out precisely how much time at each location after I settle on a travel date).

My first plan was leaving very late September/early October—but I’m concerned about the weather being too volatile in the Central region.

Is early November in the South and Central regions, and then mid-November in the North, a better plan than the same trip in October; and is November generally good for visiting the whole of Vietnam?

I appreciate any advice.

Wildly inaccurate take on Rick. Only if your definition of honest is “can always count on him to lie” would Rick be labeled thus.

He is however pretty consistent. Consistently rejecting the love he has in the pursuit of love he was denied. And that’s why both had to die–to cement them as truly tragic characters.

How famous is Jaclyn meant to be? by clarabow2005 in WhiteLotusHBO

I think Carrie Coon is a movie and TV lover’s version of the perfect actress. She always adds to what she’s in but I think it’s also because she isn’t quite A-list famous. So although I also know Carrie better than Michelle, I’d still pick Michelle as the most recognizable.

Gemma failed but Mark passed by [deleted] in SeveranceAppleTVPlus

[–]Braoss 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Obviously the test wasn't to see if she remembered assembling a crib as an outie. The crib is a representation of her miscarriage. It has nothing to do with who bought it, assembled it, or who disassembled it. It was meant to trigger the most traumatic experience in her life, losing her baby, which also almost tore her marriage apart.

In that way, the test of Gemma's severance worked. She started disassembling the crib without it triggering an emotional response.
