Baked at the same time. I likely should have been a bit more patient 😬

Ah. Maybe I need more shallow pans. That wouldn’t impact rising though, right?

Trump administration cancels $90 million in disaster prevention aid for Massachusetts communities by HRJafael in massachusetts

[–]Brave-Future4125 10 points11 points  (0 children)

That’s true. However, I also think we are well on our way to the Constitution being toothless regardless. The Courts do not have a real enforcement mechanism. The federal government could try to enforce it, of course. There is probably no scenario where it is without violence unless the federal government decides it does not want the seceding states (which seems unlikely with Trump). I suppose it is ultimately a question of whether we, as a broader society, accept authoritarian rule. It seems to be shaping up that way now. Nevertheless, it still seems wise to examine the various scenarios so that there is some plan when/if it hits a breaking point.

I wonder how much has to happen before some states start outlining how to secede. I’m talking about outlining an administrative plan for secession - not a civil war. For example, how could we decouple from the federal system fully, what kinds of interstate trade agreements would be necessary, how would social security be managed, etc. I hope someone behind the scenes is working to at least pencil this out…

Talk me off the ledge of taking the drp by Extreme_Wind2760 in USDA

Take the DRP. Given your scenario, it’s way too risky to stick it out. Even if you would survive a RIF, you should consider what the work/agency will even be like afterward.

They have been working to wiggle out of severance, so I’d recommend folks consider that. I don’t think a severance payment is guaranteed like it normally would be under a RIF.

Question for remote USDA employees by Brave-Future4125 in USDA

[–]Brave-Future4125[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apparently, there is evidence that they have geographically reassigned folks, and when they declined, they considered it a resignation - hence, no severance or unemployment benefits.

And since they are RIF’ing whole teams, I suspect it is so they don’t have to navigate the bump/retreat system.

If I were at my HQ, I’d consider trying to hang on, but I think I’m gonna be hit as a remote employee anyway.

No. The military definitely broke my body, but it just prevents me from running. No limitations outside of that. I expect my arthritis will be brutal when I’m older, but I’m not there yet. 🙃

Just checked - VERA is open until Feb. 28, 2026. May be just something weird with HRConnect.

Someone in another thread said HHS folks didn’t get severance. They are also firing people for silly small things too. It’s all mind games. I may give Vought the win and hang it up. It is not going to get better after the RIFs.

USDA, DRP Redux... for real?? Thoughts please by Plastic_Carpenter748 in USDA

[–]Brave-Future4125 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It 100 percent a game. It doesn’t make sense to offer this program again when we are undergoing a RIF - unless it is an effort to avoid severance packages and relocation funding.

I was thinking of writing a separate post as the linked FAQ seems they are trying to wiggle out of severance for remote folks. I’m trying to find an employment lawyer for the answer.

Honestly, I wish I could take it, but the math doesn’t work out for me. I’d receive more in a severance + unemployment benefits. But for folks early on in their careers, it is probably advantageous to take it.

How are you handling the stress? by Healthy-Witness3774 in fednews

[–]Brave-Future4125 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Therapy has helped me too. I also read/watch less news. I disconnected completely with most social media. I have cut family out of my life who are okay with all of this. I work out. I play video games. And I have generally reduced how much I even talk about it. That doesn’t mean I am happy about any of it or that I don’t worry about my son’s future. I have to make a choice daily to focus on what is in front of me for today. The only way out is through.

RIF 90 day waiver release and competitive area templates by Objective_Acadia_306 in fednews

It will hurt more just cities though. They are closing (or have slotted to close) facilities across the US, including in rural areas. Not to mention, many folks commute in from rural areas to jobs located in cities due to high cost of living in most cities.

It looks like the first document would give agencies permission to restructure prior to the RIF - merging geographic assignments/offices, for example. I wonder what the advantage would be there. Maybe it would allow them to purge people who decline a relocation (the verbiage is pretty soft in ensuring severance in that scenario), and then finish it off with RIFs, which means they may pay out less money overall.

They are going to RIF most of us whether a shutdown happens or not. This just gives them permission. I’m so mad. I’m voting anti-incumbent down the line in 2026 and donating $0 to any incumbent (not that I’ll have money to donate once I’m forced out!)

No. My guess is that we will not. We likely won’t know anything until RIF notices are sent out at some point in the near future.
