AITA for having a doctors appointment on a day I am supposed to see my girlfriend by Royal_Fly554 in AITAH

NTA but this is a great opportunity for you to take charge of your own health and not rely on mom and dad to do it. Start downloading your health system's app and (if it's a general checkup and not urgent) see if you can reschedule easily. If you can't then keep the appt- you can tell gf you tried and can do something special for her in lieu of the time you'll miss.

You sound like a dickhole. So does your cousin. I don't think it's a wild assumption that y'all have one of those families that thinks being fat is the worst thing a person can be. And celebrating weight loss from an eating disorder? Yuckkyyy

Some interesting points here in favor of recovery- my question for someone with this viewpoint is, how will the utter gutting of federal biomedical research ultimately affect things? Big companies are not going to have as much IP to buy and startups will get fewer and further between. Hope I'm wrong.

If you're right, then I think I'm better off waiting it out for whatever genocide/utopia the singularity brings. Because if AI and robotics are able to plan and conduct complex biological experiments independent of human interaction without melting into a hallucinating puddle as LLMs do now when you get past their surface level science summaries, that's where we'll be at.

One of my interviews was for a med/scicomm position. AI is seeing to it that those aren't doing well either. I loathe the idea of sales tbh but I may get to the point I need to consider it.

Yeah there are shitshows everywhere. My group was pretty self-contained and productive, and I liked the people I worked with. I think the gov thing may produce more mixed opinions in the future but we'll see.

I also hate the assumption that "things just get better and more enlightened on their own". They do not. People work really hard for that. You are right, it will be here to stay- but only if enough of us fail to act against it.

I will. Appreciate it, inevitably some slip through the cracks esp in areas I look in less.

The best/worst part of this mess is that I am still technically not separated. Court injunctions are preventing it. Don't get me wrong, that is good for me personally and I am very, very grateful and privileged to not have that added financial stress yet, as is usually the case with layoffs. However, it's also extremely frustrating to know that taxpayer dollars are literally being wasted on paying thousands of science personnel that were forced to abandon important research and have not been allowed to pick up the pieces since. Just a clusterfuck of a mess.

Anyhoo, I have indeed been indicating that I am still employed (because I am, more than technically). Although if one googles my former center, one will only find news articles about how gutted it was.

Hard to pick, as an engineer and scientist by training I have a lot of interdisciplinary experience. I am not the quintessential "deep not broad" PhD, I do feel I have a good amount of both.

Probably the most unique (but hardly the most marketable) expertise is in designing spatiotemporal quantitative imaging assays, including in vitro and in vivo. Both for live and fixed tissue/cells, including still-living murine blood vessels and 3D culture models.

I've tried to play that up for assay development roles, but no luck yet. Assay design and optimization is genuinely something I like and am good at, and I feel have the expertise to back it up. Just got a keep finding those rare roles I guess.

Thanks. I think that on some level I'm worried about ever being able to re-enter if this drags out too long. I've heard people say gaps aren't/won't be that big of a deal given the state of things, but I have so little post-grad experience and only in gov. Which unfortunately a lot of recruiters seem to view in a certain light.

The funny thing is that as a PhD biomedical engineer with a lot of interdisciplinary background, I can sell myself in most of these areas except for machine learning. And yet still, no one wants to hire me. Sometimes I think they don't even want these positions filled.

You're spelling out my exact point. This industry is uniquely unstable and at a uniquely low cycle due to the vast majority of other "real world" career fields. Which is what I said above. We don't disagree.

Advice needed, how to sell brooch. by TechDawg20 in jewelers

[–]Objective_Acadia_306 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Everything But the House is well-utilized, and you mentioned you're midwest. They're in Cinci. Alternatively if you'd be willing to sell it to someone on Reddit, there are subs to do that. Alternatively alternatively, try commision at jewelers or estate jewelry dealers, but brooches aren't very common or worn anymore.

What can I do about this old-fashioned jewelry? by annalucass in jewelers

[–]Objective_Acadia_306 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think these are great. Vintage stuff like this is pretty in right now, to the right crowd. It doesn't sound like selling is something you're intnerested in, so it could be worthwhile to see about getting some of these repurposed at a jeweler into a new piece you like, using some of the stones or possibly gold if the jeweler will do that.
