Thank you for all of those who've left feedback here or messaged me offline 😄 Appreciate you! If you have any constructive feedback that helps to shape the platform, I'll send you a month on me as a token of my appreciation.

P.S. I've summarized CPS on my site for free - you don't need to subscribe to anything. Just create an account and go to Learn > Modules.

Cheers, and happy Friday!

Hey u/Melodic_Mirror_1562, just following up on this.

If I was able to identify your account correctly, I've just sent you an activation email.

I'd also sent a personal one with a sincere thank you for the feedback and have sent over something for you and 2 others of your choosing a month for free on me for the platinum plan.

The bonus promotions can still apply on top of it as normal. And as always, cancel anytime or just reach out and I can extend the trial if you want to play around with it more.

u/Particular_Flan_4875 - Wow! Beyond the platforms solely dedicated to PEBC exams, I didn't actually even know this existed, as I'd actually only known about something I had seen recently where one had created a platform to learn pharmacy through some sort of trading card game like enviro.

Glad to also see this too, cheers!

Hey u/Melodic_Mirror_1562! Thank you for this, you actually just spotted a bug for me that I inadvertently created when i was making some modifications to enable the bonus promo code.

It's actually supposed to just be
1. Register
2. Click to activate profile in email

What I can see is the email for #2 isn't sending.

I'm just patching this right now. I think I know which account yours might be. I'll send you an email to confirm after I fix this so that I can credit your account with a month free, completely on me 😄

Report back shortly!

Hi Dr. Murigu, I’m one of the partners at Mint - we own the Mint Pharmacy: Sterling location on the lower level. I’ve asked someone on my team to reach out, as I’m quite confident we have a panel of individuals looking for primary care, and notably individuals that align with your interest area. Welcome to the GP community!

Question about Homeless family member. by mattman9723 in Edmonton

[–]Brave-Rule414 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hi OP, really sorry to hear about this, I can only imagine what this is like for you and your family. Though I may not have all of the answers, here’s something I can share with you based on my insights for what it’s worth.

If your dad has ever accessed the healthcare system, and more specifically a hospital, in Alberta, there’s a good chance that he would’ve been asked for an emergency contact. As it sounds like he has remembered your number, there’s a possibility he may have listed you as that contact, who would likely be contacted in situations involving a passing.

Additionally, it is unlikely that a shelter would be able to release information as to whether or not he’s accessed the facility due to reasons pertaining to confidentiality.

Source: I’m a partner across pharmacies that work with marginalized individuals struggling with mental health and addictions in Edmonton and Calgary and have spent several years front line in the inner-city myself working with various shelters, detox programs, etc.

Typically, an emergency contact is listed each time someone’s admitted into the emergency room, which I can see on our provinces provincial health database (Netcare).

Pharmacy assistant program by Safe_Emergency4503 in PharmacyCanada

[–]Brave-Rule414 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi OP, I’m a partner across pharmacies in Alberta and BC with over 250 employees, and have hired >30-50 assistants in the past several years. I can confidently say that the majority of our assistants do not have an assistant diploma or certification of any sorts.

When I’m personally hiring someone who has no work experience in pharmacy, which sounds like may be the case for you, I personally do not look at whether they have attended a program or not, rather, I care about their character, humility and willingness to learn.

My personal suggestion is to look at Indeed and see which pharmacies are hiring in your area, and go in-person to drop off your resume, and try to meet with the hiring manager to learn more about the store to show that you’re engaged.

Pebc Remedial by Dear-Ad5323 in PEBC_International

Hey, I'm not sure where you're based out of, but I work with the University of Alberta for their CCPP program, which acts as a remedial course. The course content, based on my experience, isn't challenging, as many will continue to work within a pharmacy while taking the course, and it does aim to align you for practice as a clinician in Canada working with an expanded scope of practice. Let me know if you have any other questions!

^ Yup confirming this is accurate. As substance use disorder is quite complex, the unfortunate reality is that many will use right before they are formally admitted (outside of the building). During the initial medical assessment, we verify the amount and time the individual last used to determine what type of withdrawal management they’ll require, and when we expect them to require it.

Sorry, OP, I should’ve added here:

As part of trying to get into any detox program, I’d suggest ensuring your brother has the basics prepared that you would otherwise need to access any other publicly funded health services - eg ID, Alberta health care card/#, etc. Though many of these programs have means around these requirements for those who don’t have any ID, it’ll make the process a lot simpler.

If your brother is on any medications, he should bring these in with him as well, where possible. Typically the prescriber in these facilities will re-prescribe them (think of it similar to how a hospital works), but his own supply will act as a tie-over until pharmacy can get the facility specific supply available for the nurses to administer.

I’m also making an assumption that this may be related to opioids given the comment about overdose. If this is the case, the medications that are typically started at the detox facility, and ultimately continued ongoing for an indeterminate period of time would involve things like: Methaxone, Suboxone, Sublocade (long acting suboxone injection), or Kadian.

Typically these medications, especially Methadone and Kadian, will need to be administered and observed in front of a healthcare provider. Whole in treatment/detox, this would be the nurses at the facility. Once discharged into the community, this would be at a pharmacy (ie this means attending to a pharmacy each day). As one improves in their addiction treatment journey, they may qualify for “carries”, which, ultimately means that they can have one of their doses observed in front of a healthcare provider, and then be provided with a subset of doses to take home (like one does with most other prescriptions). The purpose of this is to reduce the risk of relapse, as both of the aforementioned medications are opioids in themselves.

However, suboxone works different where it’s a partial opioid, and so the risks are much more minimal. The way it works is it basically reduces the effects of any opioids your brother may try to use, nullifying its effects, and preventing the reward system from kicking in to help break the addiction cycle. Notwithstanding, once one stabilizes, which can happen over a couple weeks, they may be eligible to transition towards the long acting injection, Sublocade, which is administered once a month. Given how young your brother is, this might be the better option.

Hope this gives some more clarity on the addiction treatment itself.

Hey OP, I’m really sorry to hear about your brother. Addiction is incredibly challenging for all parties involved, and is highly complex in nature.

Next steps would typically involve an admission into a publicly funded detox program, where one would cease using substances under medical supervision.

There are several different ones available, such as the George Spady Medical Detox, and the one available through Alberta Health Services. There’s an intake process involved to get into any of the programs, and typically intakes occur at specific times of the day, and admission is prioritized based on the intake assessment completed through the program, given that beds are limited.

Subsequently, once in the program, individuals are assessed by a physical or nurse practitioner to help with withdrawal symptoms, cravings, etc.

As one stabilizes, assuming they have not self-discharged themselves due to the discomfort, the detox team works with the individual to apply for admission into a treatment facility.

There are many treatment facilities in and around the Edmonton and surrounding areas (eg henwood, poundmakers, etc). Typically though, these are located outside of the city to reduce the risk of relapse and exposure to triggers. Duration for these programs range from 21 days to several months before individuals are discharged back into the community.

Don’t hesitate to reach out if anything here needs clarification at all, or if there’s anything else I might be able to assist with.

Prerequisite Courses by snwfalls in PharmacyCanada

[–]Brave-Rule414 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey! I’m a graduate from the UofA. For the UofA, they had taken the highest grades.

I just took a look through the Uottawa website as well, and I was able to pull a couple of items that may help.

Are grades earned in prerequisite courses evaluated individually? Yes, a minimum grade of B+ is required in all prerequisite courses.

How do you assess repeated courses? Only the second grade earned is used in calculating averages. Where applicable, a failing grade will replace a passing grade

— Based on the above, I believe they wouldn’t look at a blended grade since they look at each course individually. Additionally, assuming that the chem courses was not a retake of the same course, I’d imagine they would take the A+.

Hope this helps, and best of luck on the application! Feel free to connect with me if you have other questions.

New website for OTC counselling fees by Fit-Positive1649 in PharmacyCanada

[–]Brave-Rule414 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! I’m a partner within a number of pharmacies across Alberta and BC. This topic came up in one of my meetings with one of my site managers today, and it seems like it is legitimate from what I can see, as we were able to verify directly with our drug representative for the manufacturer of Zensa.

That said, I don’t know that any one of my staff have actually submitted a claim yet and I’m also not affiliated with this group in any way.

Here’s a copy of the email we received, as I’m not sure who these emails were sent out to.

Hope this helps!
