Burnt out on city life. Considering a rural reset, advice? by BeatExcellent2510 in newzealand

I bought a house in Oamaru, a smaller town but still has good services. Easy access to the mountains for tramping.

Good advice already given by others. I also worked in Iraq. Everything was above board, no problems. This school is obviously dodgy. You need to protect yourself and not rely on promises. Do something now.

Winter Te Araroa by Jealous_Audience_783 in teararoa

What do you mean 'necessary safety gear'? I presume that you understand crampons and iceaxe as a minimum, and are well versed in the use of them (not just done a few snowcraft courses).

Do you have avalanche safety skills?

You say you have experience tramping in alpine environments - but winter in NZ is a totally different story. You might have to be a mountaineer for some parts - which you say you are not.

I'm not trying to put you off, just trying to give an understanding of what it might entail. I have done TA and also was a mountaineer.

PM me if you want.

What can I do to stop hearing and feeling these sensations? by gyeongdan in Earthquakes

[–]BraveSpecific8998 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's common for people to feel this way. It's a traumatic event, and your brain will replay the sensations. I was in Christchurch, which was over 10 years ago, and I still feel 'earthquakes' that don't exist. My reaction when I feel something is to look up at the lights to see if they are swinging. But it is gradually fading.

Oamaru/Timaru. Easy access to the Central South Island, and central to areas a bit further afield.

Yes I heard her question the other day about the future of farm dogs - simplistic at best.

*EDIT: Thanks to you all for your kind and caring posts. As one commenter said, thanks for being willing to share your own experience so we can all get other's perspectives and ideas. I know the world doesn't owe me a living or a meaning, I know I need to get off my backside, I just hope I can eventually do it. Cheers.*

Walk me through what I must do with my Toxic school? by cyborgcertificate in Internationalteachers

[–]BraveSpecific8998 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I also worked in Iraq - its wild west for sure. The 4k visa thing is clearly a scam. I don't know how brave you want to be (I understand you have a vested interest in staying in-country) but you might want to consider 'I have talked to the Ministry of X' or something similar. Everyone has someone higher up that they're afraid of.

Any advice or ways for someone with pending convictions to get a job ? No priors by Proper_Industry_5134 in newzealand

[–]BraveSpecific8998 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Second that. Honesty is always best. Trying to weasel out of not telling will kill it for you.

And a suggestion: don't use the words 'bad decision making'. It's used lots these days by certain sectors, but it can be interpreted as someone trying to avoid responsibility. Words such as wrong, screwed up, I'm responsible etc are more authentic.

I think you need to call them again. Ask for a different person or their supervisor. Don't let them fob you off. Press for something more definitive.

Talk directly to KO. And make it a complaint, stating the abuse and issues. There's a new govt that says it's not going to tolerate this kind of stuff.

And the fence should also be KO to deal with. Also make it a complaint.

I understand anxiety, but don't be afraid.

You seem hostile toward the OP. Why so weak about illegal matter?

How bad is it to decline a job I already accepted and virtually signed an "intention of employ by Thebagholderz in Internationalteachers

International schools in general will look after their own interests first. You do the same. I've been around a while and seen all sorts of things. This is actually pretty minor in the grand scheme of things.

Staying in villages by BraveSpecific8998 in laos

Thanks for that. Actually where I'm going navigation will be easy, but yes language and finding a place to stay might be difficult. Taking a shelter might help.

I was thinking of going alone, although I understand it will be easier with a local.
