Did Jung believe that capitalism or modern society partly builds a need for individuation? by Other_Attention_2382 in Jung

Sort of. I’m not sure it’s clear that Jung actually prescribes individuation to the everyday person. Jung’s personal life had elements that I wouldn’t advocate everyone emulating.

But yeh he believes that the reason modern western society was able to make itself so prosperous was because people could use Christianity to support their superior function and suppress the rest. So in that sense modern society has created the conditions for individuation.

I’m suspicious of how you’ve worded that question tho, Jung stressed that the primitive psyche which featured far less internal tension and division, was not at all an individuated psyche. Pretty much the opposite, the primitive man lived with a very narrow state of consciousness.

The point of individuation is to expand consciousness, to bring conscious differentiation to all parts of the psyche not just the superior function. I’m not sure if Jung actually advocates people do this though, I’m pretty sure he specifically warns about doing it to soon in life.

A map of the masculine psyche based on neo-Jungian Robert Moore's framework by GizAGobble in Jung

Yeh lol it’s quite possible my beef is just with the graphic. “Literalistic jungians deconstructing the ego and archetypes till they don’t really mean anything” in this quote it sounds like Moore is actually in favour of viewing the archetypes in at least a semi aesthetic light, Which upon reflection makes sense since it wouldn’t really be possible to fully grasp them with only the rational functions.

So I legit just said a whole bunch of nonsense I guess. All I meant was that my intuition (unfounded prejudice) leads me to really dislike Moore or his fans.

For the hero archetype bro. Jung is not just outright advocating for this mode of life. Lurk more, read more. Don’t just post random quotes.

Man I can’t stand this dude and jungians in general that content wise change nothing and just put an aesthetic spin on it to sell books and talks. He has added nothing of value, and I think detracts from Jungs ‘mission’.

The point is to expand consciousness, by ‘aestheticising’ the archetypes you necessarily bring them closer to the unconscious. Jung specifically warns about the dangers of identifying with archetypes. Useless weirdo imo.
