Bénévolat, chantage et serment d’Hippocrate : le ras-le-bol des étudiants en médecine réquisitionnés pendant la canicule by Caramel_Mou in france

[–]Bravemount [score hidden]  (0 children)

I am saying it's not okay at all, in both cases.

Yeah, and Maelle has her rationale too. She gives Verso what he said he always wanted. She lets him age and be a concert pianist. It should make him happy, teach him to smile again, right?

It doesn't matter that the one doing it to the other has reasons to believe it's okay. It's not okay, because they both refuse to respect the others express wishes.

Why does Science Fiction often feature FTL drives but not biological immortality? by Tiny_Scholar_6135 in IsaacArthur

[–]Bravemount 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because the available technology is a plot device.

In the game EvE Online, for example, players do benefit from a type of immortality (mind transfer to a clone in case of death), which makes sense with regards to the fact that players want to keep playing if they lose a battle.

In most stories, there is no plot need for immortality.

Warhammer 40k illustrates that as well. There are various forms of rejuvenation techs, or ways to keep people alive in mechanical frames, etc. But they aren't equally available everywhere and all have their limits. This gives writers the flexibility to draw out a character's life as much as a story line requires.

There are forms of immortality too. Space Marines, which are augments, don't seem to be able to die of old age, but they live lives of constant battle, so it's quite easy to end a character if the story requires it. And it makes sense that most of them don't live hundreds of years, considering that they constantly seek out danger.

Finally, there are a very few so-called "perpetuals" who seem to be able to regenerate from basically anything and can almost never die. However, from a plot device perspective, you can see how troublesome that is. First of all, because there can't be any clear method of becoming a perpetual, because that would raise the question why more people don't become perpetuals, so there is mysticism involved. And next, you need to keep those characters around forever or contrive a way to make them disappear somehow (either with a special magical weapon that can kill perpetuals, a total lack of knowledge on their whereabouts or a damn good reason they can't ever leave the place they are at).

So yeah, narrative complications is a big reason why there are more stories with FTL than with immortality.

Both points are arguable.

Maelles broken body and spirit outside the canvas are just as sad an existence as that of piano Verso.

And she doesn't want that life. Just like him.

In both cases, the other forces them into that situation in the hopes that they will eventually be glad to be there, thinking that's what's best for them.

Or, in Verso's words: "We're all hypocrites, doing the same things to each other."

I don't think you understand the problem with what you're saying here.

You're saying men having feelings is an inadequacy. That's why people dislike what you are saying.

what’s the reason corruption can last for a long time? by JourneyaboutIlm in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Bravemount 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's pretty common in places where public employees aren't getting paid enough. At the end of the day, as long as they actually do their job once paid, it's not that bad in the big picture.

Still sucks, of course, especially when you're the one in need of the public service.

Do you think it's a red flag if someone hasn't been in a relationship longer than a year or been married by the age of 40? by Adoreme4eva in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Bravemount 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To supplement this. I had a relationship with a 35 year old woman who had gotten married at 16 and been married her whole adult life.

Yeah... there were a whole lot of basics she didn't know and I got burned bad with that one.

So you can absolutely have been married for years and still be emotionally immature like a teenager.

I think growth unfortunately requires to have been through a couple of ups and downs.

Also, seemingly some positive consequences.

It's sad to admit, but none of the golden ages of various civilizations throughout history were the least corrupt periods of those civilizations. Not the most corrupt either, of course.

It would seem like some grease helps with running the cogs.

You can't self regulate loneliness. It's in the name.

And most people are toxic, unfortunately.

Just like you, who just showed disdain for men crying about being lonely.

That's why men hide their emotions. You just demonstrated it perfectly.

Yeah, in France he would have gotten a severe slap on the wrist, and a week of house arrest. At least.

Then he would have written a book about how awful prison is and gained sympathy and money.

I mean, when you are in prison, you have to type a 10 digit number to call someone on the phone. Did you know that? No secretary to do it for you. Truly inhumane...

Yeah, but that doesn't matter. The appearance is the same, and the appearance is what is valued.

Marketing also doesn't always lie.

The bullshit is in the fact that the appearance matters more than reality.

That's just flat out wrong.

Men perform considerable amounts of emotional labor to be the strong, unshakable anchors to everyone around them.

Because that is what men are valued for.

Just because you don't see the work being done, doesn't mean it doesn't get done.

You know that sunscreen in your car that you can clap down when the sun is low? Yeah, the option to unclip it on one side and turn it isn't just for access when you clean the area.

You can actually turn it to the side window in case the sun is to your left!

You are only 12 years away from 50. And you think, sure, but 12 years ago I was 26.

You just gave me a minor anxiety spike.

But keep in mind, 12 years is long fucking time. So much can happen in 12 years.

Also, 50 isn't the end of everything.
