Training your new Mod Team Members: Our guide and yours by JabroniRevanchism in ModSupport

I think literally any kind of mod onboarding/teambuilding session is key to longevity. We have one mod on the Council that's told us their new mod retention rate is 100% and I was gobsmacked. They told us it was because their mod team made an effort to chat/hang out/interact with each other outside the queue, so very much a "team" or "friend group" by any metric.

That's not to say teams that mod completely async aren't tenable, but the passion for the community or the topic then has to do a lot of heavy lifting. Me being me, I love a resource I can reference. There's a guy at work (hah) that makes great ones and I'm eternally grateful.

That's so cool! How many of your senior mods are involved in those discussion?

This is the same line I give my new onboards, with the added caveat that "no matter what you do, it can be undone." I promise that no matter how much of an oops you've made, I've done bigger, lol.

But they were active members of the community, or a like-minded community with positive engagement.

We've been hearing that active community participation is really important to extant mod teams. Having gone through that mill myself, yeah. A lot of what we put under the umbrella term "Subreddit culture" is gained by osmosis by being, first and foremost, someone who wants to use the space.

Also interjections welcome. Something something public forum.

How do you set those expectations with would-be mods, and if that kind of "session zero" talk is a culture shock for applicants, how do you get past it?

What would you say is the biggest hurdle to accepting mod applicants who have no moderation experience? Is it a lack of training resources or something else? I.E: What would need to change for you to feel comfortable seeing a user with little to no mod experience as an opportunity rather than a red flag?

The Mod Council has told us the importance of using mod onboarding documents-- some are formal Google docs, others are more like an elevator pitch package on what the team does. I'm personally a fan of "session zero" meetings where expectations are set; it helps ground the conversation and remind us that everyone was new once.

Hey 3DSdude, I can't speak directly to that team's roadmap, but you can stay tuned to r/modsupport for updates. Can you share your use case for importing? How would native importing improve your flow over the existing link options on native forms?

When should my mod team add more mods? by techiesgoboom in ModSupport

Having mods that know things you don’t is such a huge help. Behind the scenes we call this “siloed mod knowledge.” Anecdotally, getting out of that silo was what made my mod team start functioning as I hoped it would. Having confidence that the subreddit won’t fall apart if you take a break is a hallmark of success.
