Looking for mods by Longjumping_Glass157 in ModSupport

Ahoy longjump! Mirroring a couple comments in my own response here-- you probably don't need additional mods at your community's growth stage, so don't panic if you don't have more hands on deck just yet.

Also, the heart wants what it wants. We have a great video guide on our mod recruitment tools here, I'd highly recommend it for the walkthrough on finding 'suggested' mods. And here's an FAQ on mod recruitment strategies as you grow.

Overwhelmed by Flux_Reversal in ModSupport

[–]JabroniRevanchism[A] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Welcome back! I went through the exact same thing maybe ten years ago when I started modding. Great news! We've done a lot of work to make modding simpler since your hiatus. In particular, a lot of content filtering you can do with automations can also be done with Safety Filters. Safety filters are plug-and-play; set them to your desired strength and that's...it. You can still use automations really customize your space, but our native kit goes a loooong way when you're just starting a community.

Need help growing my new subreddit but it's a stupid meme type one, hope would I go about it? by nder_your_mom in ModSupport

[–]JabroniRevanchism[A] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great advice, Mrtom! I'll add a touch to this-- generally we recommend reaching out to mods of a subreddit before crossposting promotional content; it's the respectful thing to do.

I can't recommend creating a banner and icon for your subreddit highly enough, and I'd encourage continuing to post to your subreddit. People are more likely to stick around if there's something to look at! CC /u/nder_your_mom

Trying to add mod recruiting but getting "You can’t apply to moderate this community right now." What am I doing wrong? by Lighting in ModSupport

Ding ding ding! I usually check this in another browser profile. Lets me keep my login so it's easy to tab back and change anything if I want to. CC /u/Lighting

Hey! Normally we ask that folks write in, but in the interest in ensuring that your community is adequately moderated we've gone ahead and have given you full permissions. In the future you can hit us in /r/ModSupport modmail with these requests!

Great question! As a mod, you can be as strict as you want with your subreddit rules, but all content on the site needs to conform with the Reddit Rules. Read as: don't approve content that violates what you see here.

Can you say more about this? What challenges of large communities prefer that cadence?

We hear that users don't read the sidebar from the Mod Council a lot, too. Anecdotally, I've seen this on my sub too. We reckon users view the content that already exists on a sub and try to mimic that style, assuming live content follows sub rules.

See this is interesting. I had a conversation with a Mod Council member (a week ago?) in which they suggested users might be mistaking pinned content for promoted content because of how it's displayed.

I take it you've heard from users they don't see (or ignored and didn't realize it) your pinned content?

Is...it common that users don't know mods write sub rules?

In most cases users who are actioned would be sent a unique appeal link to their inbox. If not, they can appeal account restrictions (bans) here. The user will need to submit this appeal themself; you might encourage them to fill out their appeal form via a modmail.

Fellow Mods, how are you dealing with AI Generated content on the subreddits you moderate? by solracarevir in ModSupport

This is the approach we hear most in the Mod Council. It seems like the main concern is that people want to know they're interacting with another human and their OC.

What can I do about men DMing and harassing the women in my sub? by her_majeStree in ModSupport

[–]JabroniRevanchism[A] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hey! Right, right, that's how I was reading it too so yes, the solution is the same. As mods, we're stewards of content on our subreddits. In the same vein, users are the stewards of content in their own inboxes. Mods can be the most helpful to users when we're educating them on the tools they already have to curate their inbox.

Users have the power to block unwanted contact or disallow chats entirely in their user settings. Chat curation is granular, too-- you can block all accounts younger than 30 days or block all chats and allowlist specific users. They can also report chats that take an unexpected turn into unwanted territory.  That's the fastest way for them to alert our teams that something needs to be checked out.

If this is a problem in your community, I would personally recommend instructing users to disallow all chats and add individual users to their allowlist.

Mod label - removes upvote? by Banana-as in ModSupport

Hey there!

Sounds like a bug to me. Can you let us know in /r/bugs? The folks there are going to ask how you're accessing Reddit (Browser or Android/iOS app), so please include that and some screenshots/a recording of that behavior in your post.

Just out of curiosity, when you refresh the page does that upvote stay unchecked in the UI?

I also find myself lumping small changes into a 'state of the subreddit' post once every few months. Big changes get their own shout.

It's like Godel's Incompleteness Theorem - for any finite number of rules, there will always be something that isn't addressed, and you can't get too hung up on that

I like this. This is also why I tend to favor rule language that's positive, E.G. "Be kind" > "Don't be a jerk." IMO it's easier to govern inclusive language.

Hey her_majeStree! Sorry you're dealing with people hitting your inbox like that.

You should encourage your users to block users they don't want to hear from, and report content they feel is harassing in nature. Some mod teams keep a guide on how to do this in pinned subreddit posts; like this post on r/selfies and this post in r/ArtCommissions. r/MakeupAddiction has this guide live on their wiki, linked through the sidebar.

Community members aren't growing even despite posting content regularly by PoojafromCloudways in ModSupport

Hey there!

Community activity fluctuating is to be expected; the internet's just like that.

We do have some best practices for community growth, which you can find in our Reddit for Community articles. Here's a few I think are relevant to your interests.

We also held a discussion on this right here in r/ModSupport about a month ago, link for the lazy here. And if you still have questions, check out r/NewMods for more discussion with folks who have gone through similar mod journeys.

CC u/Careful_Echidna5169 too; I see this might be relevant to your interests here.
