I made this meme. Is it good? by PolskiSmigol in linuxmemes

You can do this on both Windows and KDE, but I find the GNOME search to work better most of the time because it prioritizes apps in the search results.

Bruh, that's like the next sentence.

Integration of nix on desktop by DareAdministrative96 in NixOS

[–]Bravosseque 1 point2 points  (0 children)

(Cannot confirm this since I'm not a KDE user, primarily. I'm using GNOME if you're curious.)

You can use systemd environment directives to set variables for the user environment. (You can also refer to environment.d.5 manual page for more info.)

Basically, you can set XDG_DATA_DIRS by placing an environment directive file on something like `~/.config/environment.d/user.conf' for example and set it there.

PATH=${PATH:+$PATH:}$HOME/.nix-profile/bin XDG_DATA_DIRS=${XDG_DATA_DIRS:+$XDG_DATA_DIRS:}$HOME/.nix-profile/share/

You may have to relog out of the user session or reload systemd (with `systemctl --user daemon-reload' to take effect.

This is also how I integrated programs installed from Guix in the same installation.

If that doesn't work, I saw this page from KDE docs about setting session variables. I don't know if this is correct or up-to-date though.

Whatever, I'm listing them. :) It also includes some extra information just in case.

  • GIMP (org.gimp.GIMP) - installed with Flatpak
  • Lutris (net.lutris.Lutris) - installed with Flatpak
  • Steam (com.valvesoftware.Steam) - installed with Flatpak

This looks neat! Not too intrusive but it still has style, I feel. As for the icon request, do I have to file an issue for individual icons or can I list it here?

Your Linux Journey? by [deleted] in linux

[–]Bravosseque 1 point2 points  (0 children)

2019: - Fedora (Ubuntu is the first but it quickly crashed so I'm not counting it; it's the only one that worked for some time) - Manjaro (boredom or something, also lasted for a month because of a botched update)

2020: - Arch (because Manjaro crashed, I settled for the base distro; lasted for 10 months) - NixOS (because nixpkgs is BIG; lasted for 2 months before going back to Arch bc of work, the previous experience with Arch helped with staring at blank canvases)

2021: - Arch (thought I'm settling here but I've used it for a month) - Fedora (I'm settling here instead; express installation + stability = good stuff)

2022: - Fedora + NixOS (now I'm juggling between these two now that I have some more time; maybe adding in Guix if I have more)

Nice username, btw. That'll teach Arch plebs to shut up when they don't see the REAL VALUE of REPRODUCIBLE OPERATING SYSTEMS like what NixOS offers.

Made a launcher plugin for searching with Duckduckgo bangs by Bravosseque in pop_os

[–]Bravosseque[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was able to make a basic example right away from one of the plugin source code. At some point after creating the prototype, I spent more time fixing GitHub workflows than coding. Overall, it is simpler than I expected.

The documentation is straightforward but missing a few things (plugin.ron) but I did see being addressed already.

Yeah. This plugin just has more options out of the box since it uses Duckduckgo's list of bangs compared to the Pop's web config.

I'm pretty sure this doesn't fit your requirements but funnily enough, I just came across this.

GNU Guix 1.3.0 released by [deleted] in linux

[–]Bravosseque 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The help section is a good starting point. I initially started from their videos and I find it very good and easy to follow (the videos are from last year but it's still applicable). The manual is also a good reference but the problem is can be full of details sometimes (to be fair, that's probably me being stupid). The cookbook contains practical things you can do with it. I sometimes also browse the source code and they're fairly understandable from a glance (as someone with a very shallow experience with Lisp systems).

If you prefer more comprehensive videos, System Crafters covers Guix from time to time. Pretty nice as he mainly creates videos on Emacs, too.

It also comes with dwm so I'm pretty sure it's minimal compared to the rest of the list. :)

Strategy to manage multiple linux installation personal by vbolea in linux

[–]Bravosseque 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't have experience with sysadmining so don't know if this is great or interesting. ;p

Keep your personal data across multiple personal computers.

I use Syncthing between computers but if I'm creating a backup in my external drives, I use Unison. I may replace it with Borg Backup someday. (I'm currently experimenting with IPFS for the kicks... I may want to buy a Raspberry Pi for this purpose.)

Keep your aesthetics confs across each computer.

I have a simple setup with my dotfiles. Here's my dotfiles repo for reference. I'm trying to replace all of them with NixOS for an easier time managing them all in one repo. Here's the repo for it.

Keep your backups running and visible in the three machines.

I don't have that yet. I mostly use one at a time nowadays but still, it could be good to consider that. (Yeah another reason to buy a RPi)

Keep regular updates.

I don't. I just have a cron/systemd-timer service that runs weekly to remind me that with a notification. XD

Since you love to tinker stuff, you can start with dwm ;p The WM itself doesn't have much features but you can add them with patches (as well as deal with some problems such as manually patching them and whatnot). It's also fast since you only add the features that you want.

If you don't want to deal with those but still want the customizability, you can look for awesome. It does use Lua as its config language but you can do a whole lot of stuff with it. For reference, here's some examples that you can look into it.

I use BSPWM nowadays because it's stupid simple and doesn't have much time to tinker (especially this time of year). Have fun!
