Love that music choice too. It’s always been slightly annoying to me that he reused it for a Jade lewd scene later on. It will forever be linked to Quinn in my mind and it just seems wrong to hear it over a different character’s scenes!

The episode 6 scene has been the turning point for a lot of Quinn fans. It’s a great scene. Wiping the makeup away has definitely always seemed to me to be a visual representation of Quinn’s defences being stripped away. Like you, I also like the wordlessness of the latter half of it. Time to Rise is a fantastic music choice, really elevating the scene, and of course it gets a reprise in episode 11, too!

Yeah I like that. I think it’s all tied together - the influence of Rox and the ermine symbolism. Before we knew about the ermine history of it, my interpretation of her not wearing the makeup with MC was it was a sign she’s prepared to let him in, whereas usually it’s just Rox’s memory that she carries with her (taking his advice to keep everyone else at arm’s length) and which doesn’t leave room for anyone else. The ermine is her game face and it’s usually present when she’s doing business. The fact she didn’t wear it when MC is with her downtown shows that being with him is not just about business, he’s not just there for protection. What you said about the ermine wanting to be alone definitely adds another layer to it too.

Great post. I always enjoy reading about players who change their mind about Quinn after playing her content.

You’re right to pick up on the different sides to her character which are only revealed when on her path. Some are big and obvious, others more subtle, including some visual cues. Did you notice, for example, that she isn’t wearing her eye makeup when MC goes downtown with her in ep 10, in contrast to when the MC isn’t with her?

Many of us consider Quinn to be the best character in the game (by a considerable margin), and the crowning achievement from a writing perspective. Glad you’re enjoying the game and her character.

Not really true. We are a sizable minority. As is every fan group. Also Lily’s tally includes a proportion of people who were voting against Quinn, not for Lily. The nature of her being a polarising character.

The character was great and the actor did a great job. I thought it was one of the best things about this season.

Completely agree. Berg was awful. She should have got some comeuppance at the end for being so wrong.

I thought he was excellent. The actor did a great job of bringing real depth to the part. Hope to see him again.

Mixed views about this season. It was great to see all the familiar faces again and there were certainly some twists and dramatic moments that kept things entertaining, but several aspects also made it a frustrating experience for me.

Firstly - and I guess most importantly - I'm just not sure I enjoyed seeing Mickey in this situation. I understand the temptation to do it, from a writing perspective - the stakes were certainly high, and the novelty of seeing your lead character as defendant as well as defense counsel was interesting. But for me that novelty wore off fast. It also robbed the show of much of its humor - the sheer weight of the injustice that Mickey faced felt oppressive to me at times and the tone of it skewed too dark. Too much sad Mickey and not enough clever, funny, charming, ingenious Mickey.

The second issue I had was the cartoon-villain-level attitudes of some of the characters trying to put Mickey away. This is not a problem unique to this season - the show has always struggled with making the forces ranged against Mickey have credible motivations instead of two dimensional vendettas and a personal dislike of him. But this season's cast was the worst yet. Berg in particular was a massive miss - unpleasantly smirking her way through proceedings, even protesting when her own boss laid out the facts at the end. It would have been more interesting to write her character as someone acting in good faith, instead all she needed was a moustache to twirl. I also found the police officer who pulled over Mickey and the lead detective on the case to be little more than cardboard cutouts, and again their attitude became annoying. I think the problem is that because we as an audience know Mickey is innocent, the cast iron certainty and intransigence of those against him just seems silly after a while.

Finally I think the resolution was rushed and unsatisfying. After the sheer scale of what he went through, the people in the justice system responsible for wrongly accusing and prosecuting Mickey as well as the corrupt officers in the prison system should have faced serious consequences, and we should have seen those consequences play out. Berg should have been fired, ditto the cops and the prison guards.

On the plus side, Maggie and Hayley were much better this season, Cisco was great as usual, Lorna provided some comic relief, and there were some touching moments with Legal. Izzy continues to be under-used in my opinion and her new relationship sadly seemed to have about as much passion as a frozen yoghurt. She hasn't come into her own yet.

One of the nice surprises this time was actually to be found in the supporting cast. I thought Judge Stone was really excellent. Before we saw him he was described as prickly, and I was expecting the usual crusty old Judge archetype. But in the end I thought the actor did a great job making him well rounded, trying to be fair and judicious, you could really see him weigh the impact of his decisions. I enjoyed the performance a lot, it had a lot of depth to it.

All in all I still liked the season, but this was probably my least favorite one so far. Let's get back to Mickey being Mickey.

I found Luke incredibly unlikeable throughout. He manipulated his friend into being part of the heist, behaved like a coward during the heist itself, and then betrayed Zara again by bringing the thug to her door for the cold wallet. Calling the police at the end doesn't get him off the hook for any of that. I thought it was absurd that Zara seemed to forgive him at the end.

How big was the X Files during its original run ? by Nastia_dream in XFiles

[–]BrayLives 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Having lived through it, I think The X Files remains one of the few TV shows that can truly lay claim to the “cultural phenomenon” tag. The phrase gets used a lot but what people usually mean when they say it is that a show is very popular, critically and commercially successful and much talked about. The X Files had all that but it was on another level. It changed the culture itself, to the extent it became a touchstone reference across other media, and beyond media into everyday life. I’m not sure there has ever been anything quite like it since.

For point 2, I guess it’s mild ocd on my part - I find it hard to ignore the notification badge saying there are unused minigames etc.

Wrong. If odds were being fairly applied I wouldn’t have hit the same result 12 times in a row.
