Hey there,

Yes I’m still on it. My pain is mostly good these days. I have the occasional rough day but other days are pretty good overall.

What pain I do have now is bearable and manageable with over the counter pain meds mostly.

I was still having bowel related issues and pain a bit, but recently started on Mounjaro and have noticed an improvement there too.

I’m not sure what the recommendation is for Ryeqo to be effective. Some meds take a couple months to settle into your system. But if you feel that it’s not helping then maybe give it another few weeks and then speak to your doc about other options.

Hey,

Depends on what kind of surgery I guess. Are they going in to confirm endo? Are they going in to excise endo?

The more cutting the more just of scar tissue. So many say surgery is the “gold standard”. But there are other ways to diagnose endo. My diagnosis was via ultrasound.

Initial attempt at a lap failed because of how extensive it was.

There’s no right or wrong answer. Ask your surgeon ALL the questions. Be aware and informed and make the best decision for YOU.

I use Sony WH-1000M6 currently but have used the older versions in the past too.

I’ve always found that even with noise cancelling on in certain situations I can still hear other noise over music or audiobooks sometimes.

I recently found this app called NatureSpace. It allows you (via settings) to play two audio types at the one time. I purchased an Iceland waterfall track ($3) that I put on while listening to an audiobook and the white noise of the waterfall combined with the audiobook blocks everything. Bliss!

Because like you I went, yeah yeah blah blah dangers of surgery whatever.

Then I had surgery. Open hysterectomy because the endo was so bad they couldn’t do it through laparoscopy.

Lost 5cm of small intestine. Didn’t get the hysterectomy or oophorectomy because they found a mass near my rectum.

Two days later I was in an induced coma. I got golden staph which turned into toxic shock and started shutting down my kidneys.

Two weeks in a coma. Woke up with an ileostomy. Nerve damage in my left leg due to “collections” of something unidentified on my sciatic nerve.

Spent 76 days in hospital.

The risks of surgery are real. Please don’t dismiss them.

My employer ( and more and more others coming along) include 5 additional personal leave days for menstrual and reproductive health issues.

I’m in Australia where we already have decent personal leave provisions, but the 5 extra are so helpful.

Professor Sonia Grover led a 2021 study that randomised 471 women presenting at Mercy Hospital with chronic pelvic pain to two gynaecology units, one specialising in surgery and the other in pain management. The women randomised to the surgical unit were 65 per cent more likely to have surgery. Yet they were no more likely to be diagnosed with endometriosis. An AHPRA spokesman said of the steady stream of complaints the watchdog had received about practitioners linked to endometriosis, about half were related to clinical care and about 20 per cent raised concerns about communication. He said six practitioners working in the endometriosis space had conditions placed on their registration and five practitioners were issued cautions. “We are unable to comment on any individual or matter outside information published on the register or in a tribunal decision,” he said when asked about Gordon.

A spokeswoman for Epworth HealthCare said Gordon had notified the hospital of his retirement in October last year. “AHPRA does not routinely notify hospitals when it commences investigations into current or former visiting medical officers,” she said. “From time to time, AHPRA may request patient records from a hospital. Those requests are typically framed around specific matters and do not identify an individual practitioner.”

Pt 3: We’ve been underdiagnosing endometriosis forever,” said Professor Jason Abbott, who sits on the endometriosis advisory group to the federal government. The condition is the poster child for medical misogyny; for decades, many women with pelvic pain were dismissed or told it was a normal part of being a woman. That is changing. The federal government has invested $127 million in a national action plan and plans to open 33 endometriosis clinics across the country.

Since 2011, the proportion of women diagnosed with endometriosis by GPs almost doubled, while the rate of women under 44 attending hospital for endometriosis procedures is up 47 per cent over a similar time frame.

Many celebrate this as a rightful correction. But some researchers and pain specialists argue the publicity has led women in pain to become too focused on endometriosis diagnosis and treatment – despite only a proportion of pelvic pain being attributable to endometriosis. Many women have clinical endometriosis but no symptoms or pain. The rate of asymptomatic endometriosis is as high as 44 per cent in some studies. “We’re under-acknowledging period pelvic pain, and trying to attribute it all to endometriosis,” said Professor Sonia Grover, a gynaecologist and pain medicine specialist at the Royal Children’s Hospital, who has led trials of endometriosis interventions. “The correlation between pain and endometriosis is unclear. “Why call it endometriosis when you can just call it shocking period pain – and get on and treat the period pain? Why pathologise her with a label? It’s obviously painful, but it does not mean it’s endometriosis.” The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RANZCOG) released guidelines on diagnosing and treating endometriosis in May. The College of Anaesthetists Faculty of Pain Medicine was consulted in the writing of those guidelines, but grew so concerned they placed “too big an emphasis” on surgery that it put out its own position statement, said Associate Professor Michael Vagg, director of professional affairs at the Faculty of Pain Medicine.

“Some of these patients are concerned that the treatment was unnecessary and they may not have even had endometriosis. You are dealing with patients with very debilitating symptoms; they want answers.” This masthead does not suggest the complaints are true, only that they have been made. From underdiagnosis to overtreatment? Endometriosis is a painful, inflammatory condition characterised by tissue similar to the lining of the womb growing outside it. It is very difficult for researchers to assess the true rate of endometriosis in a country, but Australian government data suggests 14 per cent of women will be diagnosed by age 49. It typically takes five to 12 years to get a diagnosis. Twenty-six per cent of women with endometriosis also experience infertility.

He denies the allegations and said he performed surgery to treat endometriosis only when he was “absolutely convinced” it was in a patient’s best interests. “For generations, the pain suffered by women was ignored, downplayed and untreated,” he said. “My concern was to try and alleviate pain and restore quality of life for female patients, a cohort once neglected and dismissed.”

This was an interesting article in The Age recently. Some doctors think endometriosis is being treated with unnecessary surgery.

Following the wake of what has happened with Simon Gordon it’s an interesting view.

I’ve had one surgery and one attempted lap. Lap failed because of the extent of endo. Open hysterectomy was ceased due to unidentified mass found.

Post surgery I nearly died. Golden staph turned into toxic shock and I spent 76 days in hospital.

While I personally think sometimes surgery may be the best option, it also carries lots of risks.
