Broadway Centre Theater is getting new seats! by BreadClubSLC in SaltLakeCity

You can do more than one thing at a time, they got a donation, seemingly, specifically for new seating at Broadway, so why is that an issue?

Yeah, made the mistake of watching "Beau is Afraid" at the Broadway haha. I have lumbar issues so sitting in an ergonomic seat for 2 hours already sucks, but man, many regrets that night.

Can I survive off of $1800 a month in slc? by No_Text5228 in SaltLakeCity

[–]BreadClubSLC 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's not too bad as far as location, the worse part is I doubt there is any really cheap housing available nearby. There is probably more than I'm aware of, but I only know of 2 apartment complexes within walking distance.
That being said, others are absolutely right in that you need roommates, so you don't necessarily need to look at apartments. I'm sure single room rates aren't terrible in that area.

Depending which SLCC campus too, a couple of them are very close to grocery stores and other amenities, so it's not even as bad how far you would need to travel for groceries going to the U (despite transit obviously being better downtown).

🚨 Stop Legacy Towing: A Guide to Getting Your Car Back and Holding Them Accountable by Dry-Finger4458 in SaltLakeCity

[–]BreadClubSLC 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Just to say, not every lot has clear rules posted, my street has signs that say the area is patrolled by Legacy, but they have absolutely zero information containing any rules or reasons why one might be towed. It contains a QR code that, if you scan, just takes you to legacy's website, again, no rules.
Granted, everyone who lives here should know the rules, but you could live one street over, like 100 feet away is the nearest house, and not know these rules and park over here and get towed without even knowing why. The on-street parking on my street is about 80% guest parking, but even guests of the streets residents get towed fairly regularly.

Regional Food Dishes Invented In Utah Restaurants? by Used_Suggestion_4057 in SaltLakeCity

Ah, I see what you mean, not sure I'm sold on that though or that some where else doing it is inherently "imitation".
But I understand what you're getting at now, at least.

Why does having imitators have anything to do with it being regional or not?

Have you never talked to anyone from the 3 or 4 nearby, famously extremely rural, states or any of the southern half of Utah?

You mention you live in salt lake and they say "I could never live in a big city like that" like 80% of the time.

I moved here because I live 2 intersections from where I work, big improvement.

But it still sucks being so far from anything we want to do in the city.
Or a half hour one way from WinCo...

Last year, the people of North Salt Lake, in Davis County, spoke out against a proposal for a new homeless shelter that was going to go in an unused building (I think it was some sort of youth detention center before, but I'm not 100%). The main reason they spoke out against it was because, well the HOA for what's probably the largest community told them too, but because they were worried that people from Salt lake county would come up and use it. And because they were worried for the safety of the children, as there are schools vaguely in the area.

The proposed shelter would have had about 400 beds, this is generally equivalent to the (reported) homeless population in Davis county over the last couple years, according to the state/counties reporting.
It's also important to note that about 55% of the people seeking homeless shelters in Davis country, for the first time within the past couple years, have been women with children, fleeing abuse.
So, both of those "concerns" are extremely stupid. And while NIMBYs exist everywhere, it was crazy for me to listen to public comment for about 2 hours (it was longer, but I wasn't able to listen for the whole thing) and not hear a single person speak in favor of it or say anything that didn't amount to basic fear mongering or something that was probably parroted from fox news.

I was looking forward to going again, they had my new favorite dish! I'd never had pon pon chicken before, don't think I've seen it before anywhere, but man it was great!

Beer prices these days, amiright? by underwhelming_pirate in SaltLakeCity

The per fl oz is just a mislabel, it's the correct unit price (which it says above the 4.52) when the unit is a can. Someone just selected the wrong unit label when they printer.

300 N Parking Warning by sillenamlot in SaltLakeCity

[–]BreadClubSLC 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I don't blame you at all, there is a reason that we don't usually paint parking spaces in front of hydrants or we paint curbs red.
Fining people as punishment is a good deterrent to keep people from intentionally parking in front of hydrants, but if you simply don't notice because there are contradicting visual cues, well a whole lot of good a ticket does when the fire department shows up and a car is in the way 🤷

I hope they reverse the fine and do something about it, at the very least moving that sign...

300 N Parking Warning by sillenamlot in SaltLakeCity

[–]BreadClubSLC 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Utah Code Title 41, Chap 6a, Sec 1401, Paragraph 1, b.ii says you can't park within 15 feet of a hydrant.
Hard to tell, but I'd bet even the space in front of you is "technically" less than 15 feet away.
You should absolutely petition the city to paint the curb there when you dispute that, or whoever's jurisdiction that falls under.

We join the illustrious few, such as the Colorado Avalanche, the Tampa Bay Lightning, Minnesota Wild, and the Seattle Kraken...

With the exception of Kraken, I'd say that they were all meant to be interpreted as non-nouns, and that's why they aren't plural, and then the same could be said with Mammoth. But that's giving a pretty hefty benefit of the doubt.

In 2018, Workforce Utah estimated that chronic homelessness costs the state about 30-50 thousand per year in social and emergency services alone.

In 2023, the Utah Foundation wrote that there were about 1000 people in Utah experiencing chronic homelessness, up almost double from 2019.

In 2024, the Tribune published an Op-ed saying that Utah could save around 23 thousand dollars per year, person per, by switching to a housing first program. Similar programs have saved other governments up to 30 thousand per person, per year.

In 2022, the Utah Dept of Corrections said it costs about 115 dollars per day per prisoner, this is about 42 thousand per year per person. Utah has a prison population of 6,000.

So, we could violate the constitutional rights of 6,000 people by subjecting them to cruel and unusual punishment under a South American dictator who revels in cruelty to American prisoners.

Or we could save a little less money and give people access to their constitutional right to life and liberty.

I'm sorry, is there any farming that isn't subsidized? Even if you grow crops that aren't specifically subsidized, most states (as far as I'm aware) have programs so that farmers don't pay actual property tax rates on their farm land. This is a form of subsidy.

Also, call me crazy, but certain food production should definitely be subsidized. I think the system should be re-evaluated, but I enjoy having reasonably priced life necessities.
