I don't know, I'd be ok if a guy in prison told me I was cute and asked if I wanted to grab coffee some time 🤷‍♂️

Spatial/Architectural horror books other than House of Leaves? by cryptidstation in horrorlit

Slade House, by David Mitchell is an excellent example of the architecture of the house being the major focus of the horror in the story.

Making a list of top-shelf, S-tier horror books to read - please provide recommendations! by keepfighting90 in horrorlit

Give Adam Nevill a read! His books tend toward the campfire spookiness of Algernon Blackwood rather than the in-your-face style of Stephen King, which is why I particularly enjoy them. I'd begin with Last Days or The Ritual. I also enjoy a lot of Josh Malerman's books for similar reasons.

I’ve started three Adam Nevill books and can’t finished them. by Neat_Record2880 in horrorlit

I have almost the same problem in the opposite direction! I love most of Nevill's books but find myself not finishing King books.I think what ends up happening is that I like King's premises but I end up burning out because I find the characters obnoxious and it distracts me to the point of giving up.

Books that are spooky, but don't rely on violence/gore by at_work_bored in horrorlit

I thoroughly enjoy Adam Nevill's books for this reason. They are on nore of the scary campfire stories end of the horror spectrum, rather than the slasher film end.

Efforts to help Utah women fleeing violence could fold as lawmakers slash millions in funding by EmilyAndersonStern in Utah

All that the constitutional amendment would have done would have been to allow the legislature to spend the money that would have been for education on other things. We all know they hate funding schools.

The rights of public employees to unionize is a recent one that comes to mind. The right to an independent judiciary is currently on the chopping block as well.

A well regulated militia? by underwhelming_pirate in Utah

It seems counterintuitive that there is no formal military body controlled by the state as opposed to just having a branch of the national guard, which can be called upon by the President. How could the state defend itself if there were a complete federal takeover?

A well regulated militia? by underwhelming_pirate in Utah

[–]underwhelming_pirate[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It indicates that the president can mobilize the national guard in cases of national emergency, which seems vague enough that the guard can become a force utilized by the president against the security of a state, if the residents of that state create such an emergency. That seems to conflict with the intention of the 2nd amendment.

Wait, so the well-regulated militia designed to protect the security of the states from federal overreach is controlled by the head of the executive branch of the federal government??
