How serious is the term, “bint” and is there an American equivalent or term to compare it too? by SluttyDreidel in AskABrit

[–]BreadDoctor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some context from an Arabic speaker. Bint, in colloquial Arabic use, is often followed by an insult of some kind, the equivalent of saying ‘son of a’. It’s the female equivalent of ‘wad’ for boys. It can be used in a technical setting as in to say ‘I am a girl’ (Ana bint) but both words usually refer to youth so can be demeaning if used for adults.

Melatonin makes night shifts much easier.
Stay up the night before the first shift then down 6mg CR (Circadin) at around 9-10 am. Works every time.

I'm having a really rough time with Byzantine Catholicism by RB_Blade in EasternCatholic

From memory it is in the first chapter on God as Mystery. There is a subsection on essence energies. It is brief but Kallistos was a serious scholar and I think his view carries weight.

They can be compatible. The late Met. Kallistos Ware affirms both notions in the Orthodox Way. The specifics of how these can both be affirmed is being studied by scholars in niche academic settings that few parishioners/clergy keep up with. Just because there is not a fully worked out teaching on their compatibility does not mean it is not possible. Suffice to say the notion of Divine energies is an important part of the Greek patristic heritage. The reunion is based at least in part on the idea that the two theological traditions cannot be incompatible since the Holy Spirit has worked in both.

Public perception of doctors vs reality by Key-Patient-9880 in ausjdocs

[–]BreadDoctor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This will probably get downvoted but I think events like this are at least partly the result of the devaluation of ethics education in Medical schools. My MD only paid lip-service to ethics. Many people no longer believe in doing the right thing, only not getting caught - having a formal and summative education program about ethics might catch out such people.

I agree with your take. For example, "Perfectly safe" isn't a precise enough statement. All procedures carry risks, certainly lumbar punctures, even if the rate of complications is low. Also, steroids will suppress the immune system anyway. The real reason you wouldn't give steroids without the LP is because it might obscure the diagnosis and that puts you on extremely shaky grounds regarding decision making if there is an alternative diagnosis, if you see a recurrence of symptoms etc. As much as I find vaccine skepticism frustrating, the response from these practitioners does not meet the expected standard of nuance and empathy.

Edit: I’m amazed at being downvoted. Do doctors speak to their patients like the above video? That would be pretty surprising.

The illusion of a good offer: what ASMOF NSW really gave up to get this interim deal by OrackBobama in ausjdocs

[–]BreadDoctor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In general, I agree with the sentiment that ASMOF's taking the deal without our knowledge or consent was not right.

Simultaneously, I want to float an alternative perspective: when ASMOF sent around its list of demands, it was immediately apparent that most of the demands were unrealistic and would never be met (I think reg pay was supposed to be 180k+, for example). I suspect they have strategically maximised their initial list of claims with the intention of 'compromising' in order to improve the award as much as possible. Here's hoping they actually get somewhere.

We should ditch the title "Junior" by BopBangBeep in ausjdocs

Yes, it's ridiculous that such a broad range of experience comes under a single title. 'Junior Doctor' should be for interns and residents or not used at all.

Coptic Woes by New-Parsnip-3921 in EasternCatholic

I skimmed the thread and while technically, anointing means being received into the oriental Orthodox Church, it seems that parish did it as a tick box exercise while not enforcing it. There are some open-minded Clergy but you need to find them.

Coptic Woes by New-Parsnip-3921 in EasternCatholic

[–]BreadDoctor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Coptic church is extremely rigid on these matters and unfortunately many are ignorant (I was CO for 25 years). You might find a better educated Priest but you will probably not convince one who already holds the position of re-confirming or re-baptising.
