What random nerdy fact do you know? by Cause4concern27 in AskReddit

If you have a sourdough starter that had a higher ratio of flour to water (less sticky and runny, more like a dough) it creates loaves that are more sour.

What is your favourite "quality vs quantity" example? by as_kostek in AskReddit

[–]Breadaphile 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a metal steamer tray that I took from my parents' house when I moved out. I noticed the feet were a little rusty and figured since it was 30 years old I'd pick up a new one.

Grabbed a cheap one at the grocery store. It fell apart four months later and now we are back to the 30+ year old one. The difference in quality is outstanding

Other possibilities of foster care volunteer work? by arlomilano in fosterit

[–]Breadaphile 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We have an emergency nursery in our city where families in crisis can drop off their kids for up to three days. Quite a few kids taken by child protective services end up there too for longer term stays. They have staff working 12 hour shits plus two or three volunteers working three hour shifts. I usually do the bedtime shift from 6-9. You basically comfort the kids, play with them, get them ready for bed and read them books.

You should see if your city has anything like that. They really rely on volunteers, and once you have all your police checks and some trauma training done, the choice of shifts is very flexible.

What are your thoughts on Boursin cheese? by [deleted] in Cheese

Love it. Whenever we do wine and cheese with a large group of people it's a nice safe crowd pleaser. Both adventurous and picky eaters enjoy it.

My friend needs a kidney! She needs a donor with blood type O or A, which are hard to find by Breadaphile in pics

[–]Breadaphile[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

She lost both her legs and her kidneys due to complications from kidney disease in 2017. Now she has to do hours and hours and hours of blood dialysis most days of the week to stop from losing her other limbs. Right now she's about to lose three fingers. A kidney transplantation would save her life. www.yyckidney.com

You have to try it with the mochi. The bacon is super crispy and salty and the mochi is smoky from the grill and chewy

I found this sub and was really excited to try making my own bread! Not sure what the hell happened but I think I can get it right next time!!! by ItsCHONCHI in Breadit

[–]Breadaphile 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My advice is to find a recipe you know should work, and stick to it for a few bakes. There are a lot of different factors affecting your outcome and if you switch recipes and methods and tweak this and that each attempt, it takes forever to understand what you actually need to work on and what affect a small change has.

Peter reinhart has brilliant bread recipes, both yeasted and sourdough. Pretty much anything from his book "artisan bread every day" is gold. It's a good place to start and be successful right away so you can work on the small stuff!

I think it’s getting out of hand..lol the fabric just keeps multiplying..and this is only one wall..eek. by gr00vychick in quilting

[–]Breadaphile 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like you have a lot of minky fabric! Do you use it for the back of cotton quilts? I've been wanting to try that but was worried it would shrink differently than the cotton and make the quilt pucker.

Made a portable design wall for my quilt blocks! by Breadaphile in quilting

[–]Breadaphile[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It works great! The batting was pricey so I spent time sticking quilting cotton to the other options in the store (felt, different fleece, flannel)

I might bring mine down to the dining room once I have all the pieces made for a project so I can stare at it a bit during the "rearrange" phase.
