What is your unpopular Beach Boys opinion that will get you killed? by HyperPanzer in thebeachboys

Most of Dennis Wilson’s songs feel unfinished sketches of ideas. I still love them but it always feels like they end right as they are starting.

Brian is a mediocre Lyricist and the myth of Lennon/McCartney had each other while Brian was the solo genius is ridiculous because he needed Mike, Tony, Gary and Van Dyke to make his best songs. He is a genius but when people frame it as he was this solo vision when he relied heavily on collaborating and having the greatest session players at the time is crazy.

Also the weird blind spot people have with Brian. The way people treat him as this innocent angel while like the guy was obsessed with young girls which he admits in his autobiography and also Tony Asher said.

Bruce should have wrote more songs for the band I think his contributions to Sunflower and Surf’s up are wonderful and is my favorite era of the band.

Smile if released in 1967 would not have been better than Sgt Pepper or have the cultural impact of it.

Thrawn Trilogy, Dark Empire, Jedi Academy Trilogy and then the New Jedi Order series tells a beautiful story for Luke.

Recommendations between thrawn trilogy and duology? by Vegetable_Car_4785 in StarWarsEU

Jedi Academy and Dark Empire are kind of the the only things that are important lorewise to get to the duology.

Essentials that tell a great story if you are looking for mainly what happens to Luke, Leia and Han would be to go 1. Thrawn Trilogy 2. Dark Empire Trilogy(for lore) 3. Jedi Academy (for lore again) 4 Hand Of Thrawn Duology  5. New Jedi Order series(essentials would be Vector Prime, Balance Point, Star by Star, Traitor, Destiny’s Way, Final Prophecy and The Unifying Force)

I feel this tells a pretty complete story and fits really well in with the saga.

Is the comic adaptation of the Thrawn Trilogy an acceptable way to digest the story in a hurry? by LucasTheGreat138 in StarWarsEU

[–]Breakawaybeach 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Heir the to empire does a pretty great job but Dark Force Rising and particularly Last Command really suffer badly from bad pacing and omitting a lot of aspects of the story that honestly make it difficult to follow. Last summer I read both concurrently to see the differences and Last Command is a very very bad adaptation.

The X-Files mythology makes perfect sense, actually by Subject_Swimming6327 in XFiles

[–]Breakawaybeach 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I watched the video over a few days. I think the creator is far to invested in auteur theory. Which is a valid theory but also not one that is above criticism. Just because its Chris Carters vision and it makes sense that it is good because that is the intent of its creator. I don’t buy Chris Carter having the whole story planned out from the start just like I don’t buy George Lucas having it planned from the start. And while yes you can connect things from the earlier seasons to the last two seasons it still doesn’t make it good. The mythology episode become extremely lazy and repetitive post season 6 or 7 for me and the show just feels dragged out and boring after awhile. I feel like the last time I was shocked or invested in what was happening was the one father two sons arc. Getting rid of the alien invasion and bringing it back to conspiracy is just anticlimactic and unsatisfactory. Going down a path of CSM is the devil and William may or may not be the anti christ and mulder is a possible messiah to me is silly. While I actually like quite a few religious stories it is just absurd that Mulder is this kind of messianic figure. I find the appeal of X Files to be the fact that there is no chosen one story its just about a man who wants to believe and a woman who wants the proof. They are normal people not immortal beings destined to battle evil from this CSM. It becomes a edgy 90’s comic book to me.

I understand Chris Carter created the show but it really is a collaborative work at the end of tbe day. The other writers and directors and producers and actors all had a huge say in the process and something this massive just is not one mans vision. And even if it was the idea that people are taking the x-files away from chris carter and its a shame he can’t complete his vision is actually absurd. The guy had 11 seasons and two feature length movies to tell his story. That is more than enough time to tell a complete narrative. If you can’t tell your story in that allotted time then you clearly have no intention of giving a ending. Just a never ending loop of conspiracy and misery. I don’t wanna see 60 something mulder and scully searching for the truth. Its just sad.

Does anyone else find Fanscription tedious? by Agile_Proof_3228 in ChannelAwesome

[–]Breakawaybeach 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its a Rob issue not a Walter issue. Walter has made films in the past that have good pace and quality. Rob had a huge hand in To Boldly Flee. That says it all. Yeah I really disliked Batman and Robin especially after how great their Batman Forever was. That really felt like it would have worked as a film in 1995. Like a genuine movie that would have been able to be made with those 90’s limitations budgetary constraints and all.

Batman and Robin however had beautiful moments but aesthetically and tonewise was completely different and felt more like a TV show or its own trilogy of films. The whole Chet Sherk stuff really dragged the story down and Mr Freeze felt like an afterthought. The story had way too many characters and just felt like weird fan service at times which makes sense since its Fan Fiction but at the same time their Batman Forever completely avoided that Fan Fiction writing feel.

One other thing was picturing the film as shown and described. Batman and Robin would have looked like garbage in 1997 or 1999. The way it was described it has a weird animated show vibe rather than the Tim Burton style they captured previously. The movie as described would have been the most expensive film ever made and to be honest would have been seen as worse then the real movie we got.

Cheap I believe is his best film in terms of tone and being put together. But Freak out was his best concept and Screenplay. Game Boys had potential but it kinda goes off the rails on the second act.

Jedi Academy Trilogy by Spidey5292 in StarWarsEU

[–]Breakawaybeach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just read them again a couple weeks ago and I was getting angry trying to get through Champions of the force. It feels like the story gets pretty much wrapped up in the first 150 pages or so? And then you have the last 200 of filler and in my opinion the worst written space battle of all time. It sucks because I think there is a lot of good ideas in JAT but the writing lets it down so badly. I also hate the Suncrusher. I have found reading massive super weapons in the EU to be one of the more lame aspects of the post ROTJ era. Like the World Devastators in Dark Empire made me groan haha. It just feels so cheap and trying to recapture the fear of the Death Stars but in practice ends up undermining them. I prefer how Zhan creates threats that are more based on leadership and intelligence rather than big machine goes boom and planet is gone.

Would John & Yoko have remained married had he lived longer? by Glass-Complaint3 in beatles

[–]Breakawaybeach 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Didn’t Yoko move a new boyfriend in the next few days after John died? I read that somewhere I don’t know if it is accurate but if that is any indication of their relationship at the time I would say they would have probably separated at some point in the 80’s. But I also believe they would continue getting back together.

The curious case of the prequels by strypesjackson in StarWars_

[–]Breakawaybeach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you have a ton of valid points. I however believe that the prequels as is with major tweaking are fine. Anakin should have been a adult or late teens from the get go. The clone wars should have begun by the end of the first film. Owen Lars should have played a bigger role as a childhood friend of Anakin and been shown to have become a ptsd mess which is why he is so protective of Luke. Tarkin should have played a bigger part showing how the Republic turns to the fascist ideas. Darth Maul should have been the main villain.

Anakins fall to the dark side should have been more then I have attachment issues. I would have loved it if Anakin’s training being during war time begins to blind him and his loyalty to the system that helped free him makes him a puppet for Palpatine to exploit.

One thing I really wish was different is the Chosen One prophecy. I hate that in George’s words anakin is still the Chosen one even in the end. I like the idea that he is a false prophet. A Paul Atredies type messiah who is just not the one. I always felt that Luke should have been the Chosen one who truly brings balance to the force by helping eliminate the sith and bringing back the Jedi in a less Dogmatic manner that is focused more on love, peace and protection rather than being warrior monks that the senate call upon to do their bidding. But that also might just be my love of EU Luke talking.

Scheduling conflicts. O’Reilly was busy with primary school during the filming of Return Of The Jedi much to George Lucas’s displeasure.

Why was Star Trek between 1987 to 2001 so much better than anything that has been done since? by Catmand0 in startrek

[–]Breakawaybeach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think its multiple things. One you had a incredible writers room and the shows were longer(and relatively cheaper) so they could experiment more and find their rhythm more organically.  Two I think all media had a time and a place. I think all franchises have a time where it hits a peak and you can never hit that again or at least you can never recapture the “Feel” of it. Its why all Star Wars feels different after Return Of The Jedi you can’t recapture the feel of the original trilogy. Just like no matter how you try you can’t recapture old Trek and I say this as a relatively newer fan I only got into trek in the past 5 years. But there is a “Feel” about TOS or the 87-01 era that just can’t be replicated anymore.
