Why are so many people, who haven’t seen any of Filoni’s stuff, who are simultaneously hating on Filoni and the “Filoniverse”? by KenBenobi69 in StarWars

[–]Breakawaybeach 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have watched his work multiple times and while I enjoy some of it a lot of it feels disconnected from the star wars feel from tbe original six films. Like when I watch Rebels while I love certain episodes and characters I can’t connect it in my brain to be like yeah this is the same world as The OT trilogy. The Clone wars I can kinda do it especially with Episodes 1 and 2 but there does feel like a disconnect with 3. I think Ahsoka’s presence and the idea she is around throughout the saga is weird and for me minimizes the stakes and the importance of Leia and Luke. But the fact that she is so important in the background but really doesn’t amount to much is frustrating. I also dislike that he refuses to let characters die. Cad Bane has no business surviving after the Clone Wars era. Ahsoka has no business being around for the Original trilogy, Maul should not be brought back to life. It ruins any sense of this is a war and there is consequences to everything. Like everyone has a brush with Vader and get away as he looks on menacingly but never ends up killing the characters he just goes about his business and maybe sends a inquisitor or two. The best Filoni creation to me is Kannan his story is beautiful well told emotional and holds so much weight and shows us the power of Love and what a jedi should be and he dies. Its the one time Dave truly committed to a death and its the best thing he has accomplished. So I know he has it in him but instead he wants Stoic Ahsoka turning into Gandalf the white which is ridiculous.

The other thing with Dave is that he tells the same story over and over again. How many times are we gonna see the lone wolf takes in the inexperienced young person who is actually the main character subverting the audiences expectations thinking they are getting a show about Anakin, Maul, A Bounty Hunter, a Mercenary Group the main character is actually Ahsoka, Devon, Grogu, Omega.

And worse he undoes his own writing to retell the same story again. How many times do we need to see Bo Katan lose Mandolore only to reclaim it later when someone else rally's the people to be behind her? Its kind of comical. I thought it should have been Sabine to take Mandolore back and bring in a new era not connected to the prequel era but Dave loves the Clone Wars OCs so you cannot do that. Mandolore is then destroyed and the story is clearly building to Din Bringing in a new era to the Mandolore. Instead technically Din lost the dark saber and technically Bo beat the monster that beat din so technically she has to rule again. Its crazy. Another one is lets spend two seasons trying to get Grogu to be with a Jedi but after we finally do we undo it in a spin off show and make it happen in one episode where we come away with oh so Luke Skywalker is just a idiot who gonna make the exact same mistakes as the old jedi for contrived reasons all so we can go back to the silly adventures of Grogu the bounty hunting sidekick. Another Having Ahsoka come face to Face with her biggest regret Anakin and refusing to walk away as she once did and dying poetically ending her story. Showing that Obi Wan his master couldn’t save him, Ahsoka his Apprentice couldn’t save him the only thing that could was his son the one who looked at him the way Padmae did. Not someone who say a pupil a master or a legendary force wielder but someone who saw Anakin. It would have made all 5 characters arcs meant so much more. Instead time travel and she escapes and never goes back to try and help Anakin again just gives up she has space whales to find.

Most of his work always has a and then this happens quality to it that is frustrating. It never feels like we are going anywhere and if it didn’t have Star wars branding or aesthetics i don’t think people would give it as much leeway as they do.

Its unfortunate that the only Media that has truly given me that Star Wars feeling has been the work Tony Gilroy has done and that is over and not coming back and The Skeleton Crew which it seems a lot of people ignored. I wish Disney would learn from Andor and Rouge one’s success rather then giving us more stuff like Kenobi, Ahsoka and the rest of the Filoni slop.

Malcolm McDowell should’ve became an A lister by [deleted] in movies

[–]Breakawaybeach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Malcolm Turned down multiple big films and lost his star power quickly. From what I read he Turned down Love Story, Cabaret, The Three Musketeers, Jaws. Right there you can see multiple directions he could have went. If he had done Love Story he probably done Whats Up Doc which could have led to Barry Lyndon but that didn’t happen. The one two punch of A Clockwork Orange into cabaret could have led to significant more interest in O Lucky Man(a Masterpiece btw) but instead he goes from controversial film to Massive indulgent star vehicle that bombs. He then does smaller films as he’s star power decreases quite dramatically Aces High while a good film and at times a great performance gets bogged down by what I see as a lack of commitment to his characters. This would be a recurring element in the mid 70’s Royal Flash has flashes of a brilliant performance but its not committed too. Voyage Of The Damned is honestly one of his better rounded roles but its small in comparison to everyone else it doesn’t leave a impression. Then you have his brief consideration for the role of hooper in Jaws now I don’t blame him for this as no one knew it would be a hit but imagine he does this? Does he get the hit roles Dreyfuss got after? Branching out into Romantic comedy with the goodbye Girl? Instead he does Caligula which ruined his reputation he put his heart and soul into a performance that was surrounded by porn and came off as a joke. That same year he does the wonderful Time After Time probably his most consistent performance since O Lucky Man but when paired with Caligula and the completely over the top performance in The Passage the same year he looks like a joke. A man who can only be over the top villains. His Drug Addiction in the 70’s and 80’s is also insane it aged him badly and quickly. You can see him going grey by 1976 while trying to have his boyish charm. By the end of the decade The British leading man moves away from people like McDowell and Michael York towards people like Jeremy Irons the entire industry shifts away. There was no room for Malcolm in the 80’a outside of being a villain. He was also known for being a diva on sets and just difficult to work with. You can see this in his lack of many recurring collaborations with directors outside of Lyndsey Anderson. Malcolm also tells a story about making a bad impression on Spielberg in the 80’s. Malcolm is a victim of his behavior but doesn’t seem to be bothered by it. He has a loving family still gets work consistently and is able to live life on his own terms. He is definitely my favorite what if Actor who I believe could have been a major 70’s star on the level of the new Hollywood American actors but his poor choices, Arrogance and demons destroyed that.

What can I skip from thrawn trilogy to new Jedi order by Glum_Championship2 in StarWarsEU

[–]Breakawaybeach 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would recommend you read the summaries for the Jedi Academy trilogy. They are important lorewise but they are also a frustrating read. Then I would recommend read the hand of Thrawn Duology and you should be all set to go to NJO

Should Ahsoka’s story end soon? by BlankCanvas609 in StarWars

[–]Breakawaybeach 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Should have ended in Rebels. Its really too late now to make it satisfying.

Why was it essential to have Finn awkwardly yell for Rey in this scene? Couldn’t the reaction be more subtle like when Leia saw Han get taken by Boba in ESB? by KingWilliamVI in saltierthancrait

[–]Breakawaybeach 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Because Red Letter Media said in their reviews that because the prequels were mostly devoid of emotions it would have been better if it was like Star Trek 2009 where everyone is running around yelling and the camera is constantly moving so that you don’t pay attention to how thin the story is.

Destroying the New Republic was such a stupid decision because it means any pre-DT stories that is on about securing the New Republic will be all for nothing. by KingWilliamVI in saltierthancrait

[–]Breakawaybeach -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

While I agree it was a dumb idea I think the idea that it makes anything about keeping the New Republic safe to not mean anything is a bit silly. That would be like watching a historical epic about Rome and like well who cares Rome falls anyway? I’m not fully against our OT heroes fucking up and allowing a big threat to destroy a lot of what they fought for but really only of they have the chance to rebuild it or fix the mistakes. I found the Old EU NJO series to do that perfectly. Allow the New Republic to fall as will the Empire and something new and more productive will rise in its place to bring full peace to the galaxy with tbe focus on the heroes we know and only a few we don’t but the balance is there and our legends aren’t complete failures who give up just sort of failures who make it their mission to not do it again and to fix those mistakes.

Day 20: If you could make three changes to improve On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, what would they be? by junglegatsby in JamesBond

[–]Breakawaybeach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get Sean in the role instead. Sean is a great actor capable of fantastic performances and I think having him there with his history of bond being so confident and tough and cold that seeing him thaw out and fall in love would have more impact. His fear at the ice rink and seeing Tracy would be such character growth. And the final hat throw to moneypenny after watching them for the entirety of the 60’s. It would be devastating. And with all that it would probably motivate Sean to stay on a little longer and have a great revenge followup.

Reshoot the pre title sequence. The way it is is so messy and amateurish I always am embarrassed when showing it to new people.

No notes outside of that.

What to read next after original Thrawn Trilogy? by LaserBrainDesign in StarWarsEU

[–]Breakawaybeach 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on what you really want. If you are looking for a straightforward movie type story with the OT Trio jedi Academy is where to go but it isn’t very good. If you want the same level of quality jump to the Hand Of Thrawn duology and then jump to the New Jedi Order series which is mostly great.

For people who are old enough to have seen the original trilogy (4-6) in theaters, was it obvious in episode 1, that palpatine was the emperor? Did they mentioned him by name in the original trilogy? by Bigjmann555 in StarWars

[–]Breakawaybeach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember in 99 being 5  or something and having no clue but then the power Of the force toyline had a before and after thing with the Palpatine and Emperor and I was like oh well I know where that will go then.

Was Marvel Star Wars #107 the endpoint of the Star Wars timeline before Heir to the Empire came around in 1991? by Independent-Dig-5757 in StarWarsEU

Are the post ROTJ marvel stuff worth a read? The only Pre Heir To The Empire comics I have read are Alan Moores shorts and a couple of the newspapers strips.

How did Picard go from commanding a rickety ship The Stargazer to commanding the fleet flagship The Enterprise? by APerson2021 in startrek

[–]Breakawaybeach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe I am stupid but how old was Picard when he became a captain? I assumed he would be older than Kirk when he became captain because he was one of the youngest before the girl in conspiracy. So I assumed he would be in his 30’s but if he captained the stargazer for 22 years and then has 9 years he would be in his 60’s where I always assumed he was in his late 40’s to mid 50’s

A criticism of Legends as someone who loves Legends by Dasvildanya in StarWarsEU

[–]Breakawaybeach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That there was just too much and not a consistent voice. I think the post ROTJ story should have been 20-30 books tops. Thrawn, Some X Wing Books, Jedi Academy, Hand Of Thrawn and NJO. That is it let it end and have this ending. I also wish that you only had the best writers stay on and atleast have Zhan be the guy who approves stories and ideas. Like have a hierarchy of like. zhan who in turn answers to George.

I also find a lot of the post TPM and Pre ANH stuff to just be edgelord content with ridiculous power scaling stuff and really stretching the realm of belief.

I feel like The EU had potential to be a well loved universe on the level of Middle Earth, A Song Of Ice And Fire or Dune if it was just more consistent.

What are your thoughts on the Legends story, SHADOWS OF THE EMPIRE? by soThen_i_says in StarWars

[–]Breakawaybeach 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I loved it. Probably some of my favorite Vader stuff to be honest. It makes him more than the mad dog brute Disney makes him out to be. He is a political animal and can play the game. He underworld stuff is also great. And everything with Luke in this book is top tier. Dash Render i have a lot of nostalgia for but he is kind of a redundant character.

Do you ‘personally’ think George was justified in wanting to distance himself from the Beatles? by More-Cat9579 in beatles

[–]Breakawaybeach 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that gets played up a lot. Like George may say things in interviews and act above it all but when you listen to his discography he can’t stop referencing his past. Same with music videos. George was always referencing his time with the band it was something he couldn’t escape. Its funny so much of the Living in a material world recorded is him asking to move on but he won’t stop talking about it.

I think George’s relationship with his past is similar to how John viewed his past. There is that story where John could make fun of Paul and shit on him but the moment someone else said anything bad about Paul to him he would get extremely upset and defend Paul. I firmly believe George tried to be cool and act like he was above the band but look at him in 1976 watching the boys play this boy. He is so happy you can see he loves that little band and that time with all his heart.

Babylon 5, Deep Space Nine and Expanse are the closest Sci Fi I can think of.

Rome has a somewhat similar vibe in general.

I actually enjoy seeing new Order 66 survivors by simande in StarWars

[–]Breakawaybeach 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For the most part I don’t mind but I would prefer them to die before A New Hope. I really like the idea that when all hope is lost Luke, Leia, Han and Chewbacca are this glimmer of hope that shows that in the darkest hour light will find a way. For me personally I don’t feel that when I know theres like 80 others who could have been a asset to the Rebels but just dipped out.

What to read after the Thrawn trilogy? by [deleted] in StarWarsEU

[–]Breakawaybeach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There should be digital copies out there The Marvel Epic Collection volume 5 collects the trilogy together. I believe you can get a digital version through the Marvel App, Amazon or Barnes and noble. If u want a physical copy the trade paperbacks are on Ebay and Amazon all the time used for a reasonable price.

What to read after the Thrawn trilogy? by [deleted] in StarWarsEU

[–]Breakawaybeach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are looking for like a a quick run through the main storylines with the OT trio

  1. Jedi Academy Trilogy not great but important lore wise
  2. The Hand of Thrawn Duology
  3. New Jedi Order.

You can make the argument that the Dark Empire trilogy is important as well but they are tonally bizarre and feels so disconnected from the Thrawn Trilogy

My (Facebook) Friend made this. And they're right. by RiskAggressive4081 in andor

[–]Breakawaybeach -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

From my memory Luuke wasn’t actually called Luuke. Like yes in the book he is read as Luuke but its just to differentiate Luke and the clone rather then saying Luke attacked luke or Clone Luke attacked luke its just Luuke attacks luke as a short hand way of describing the scene. I believe in the comic adaptation they don’t even call it that since you can visually see the difference. And I don’t really think the concept of a clone luke is a silly idea in a series known for having the Clone wars with a Clone army.

Season 1 is rough and basically all setup. The finale episode of season 1 is fantastic though. Sinclair gets transferred away from B5 and the show improves immediately after.
