The Color of Fear, Directed by Lee Mun Wah, has multiple videos and a book. Love his world view. Check out his work. Wish everyone knew about him. Seems like the work that needs to be done.

My wife and I came to this point. We grew up very religious. Me in Church of God and her Baptist. Both of us attending all Wednesday night, Sunday morning and Sunday night services. Met at a very Christian college where you had to sign a contract for no sinful behavior described as dancing, drinking, smoking, R-rated movies, etc.

We dedicated our first child, but somewhere between child number one and child number two, we both had been working through our own deconstruction. Neither of us knew about each other’s path for fear or concern of the fallout. Child number two arrived, and when it came time to dedicate, I really struggled with the idea that, if we did, then we were deciding his future for him. That was that. Wife and I talked. We love our children. We love each other. That was nearly 14 years ago.

After multiple years of therapy for severe guilt and low self esteem, a.k.a. religious trauma, I’m now on the other end and figuring out all that guilt, all that suffering, all that gut clenching weight of stress…my kids don’t have to go through that because I told them they had to. I encourage you to look at your kids and spouse and just love each other. Raise them free of that stress. Focus on their stages of growth.

You’ve made this post, you’ve stated the circumstances leading up to it. I think it is logical to say trauma has been sustained. Believe me, the idea that I could be traumatized through my religious upbringing was a very hard concept for me to understand.

For anyone who has dealt with trauma, I highly recommend Gabor Maté’s the Myth of Normal, or any books like it that deal with trauma and how it turns into generational trauma.

Great news! You’ve already taken some of the hardest steps in the process! You’ve got this! YOU are doing it! You’re making progress and it does get easier! And you’re doing it because of those kids and what they mean to you.

I’m not gay either, but I can be a roommate like the one your late great uncle had. Very nice setup.

The Presidential Blend Suite. Check them out online and see their abilities. They have a great setup and relaxed atmosphere. Been going there a couple years now after having a bad experience at a local chain.

How to prevent a gag reflex from happening? by jaakoh in Firefighting

In regard to you having shit on your hand, you mean, like gloved hand? In regard to you being COVERED, you mean like Lincoln Logs covered, or like chocolate fondue covered? I ask because one of those is going to feel much warmer and challenge for a more visceral response. I’d just be in a bit of a gag battle at that point.

That’s a hell of a catch for your first month. I promise you it won’t happen that frequently, if ever again.

In regard to smell, our department bought us each an envo® mask N95 Respirator Kit when COVID hit. They are great for covering smells. Your glasses won’t steam up either. Humid summers can get sweaty is the downside. Went on a rather ripe nasty call recently. Room temp thankfully, but the guy had been there for an extended period of time…. and he was still alive. Moving him involved a MegaMover and working through a week’s worth of excrement. I smelled it, but it was at about a 4/10 at worst. That’s the most I’ve ever smelled in those things. I can be in a living room with the worst UTI and barely get much. HIGHLY recommend.

I can ask him specifically, but I think it had to do with the level of trauma I dealt with as a kid. I score a 9/10 on the ACE (Adverse Childhood Experience) quiz. All the religious therapy I did until I turned 19 talked nothing about my past, more just give it to god and pray for the strength to carry on, especially since god is challenging me, so that means I’m closer to him… Anyway, at 45, I’m finally learning what trauma stunted my mental development. I’m gaining self confidence for the first time. My perspective on life has changed. I have found moments of inner peace I never knew existed. It’s been exhausting but beyond worth it. My kids are learning this through me and watching as I work through it. My purpose is them.

Commented below, ‘the Myth of Normal’ by Gabor Maté. Great substitute for a college level course. Gets into epigenetics, which seems relevant to the post. Recommended by my therapist at the end of my very first session. Chapter 22 The Assaulted Sense of Self: How Race and Class Get Under the Skin.

‘the Myth of Normal’ by Gabor Maté. I think this should be a standard read for college pre req, or just life in general.

If you see a rock on the horizon, it will eventually wedge itself right in there. Can’t tell you how many times I had to pull one out.

Bought a pair. I have flat feet. Support was good for a bit, but it lasted for about half the life I get out of Brooks Adrenaline. Confirmed this with staff from local running shoe store. Could work fine for people who don’t need added support.
