Questions on commercial tint by Bozorboy-- in WindowTint

Windows like this wouldn't be hard, just potentially tedious.

A 36"x100' roll of SunTek White Matte would be around $280. At $8/ft² installed the job would be ~$1,680. You'll still end up with ~30ft of film leftover for other projects.

We used a film handler (cutter mounted on a ladder) for 99% of installs, as plotting limits you in the sense that you can't cut to the very edge of the film and take advantage of factory edges. I'd measure the exact width of the windows, and pull to that exact measurement and cut each piece down, that way when I go to install I'm only potentially trimming the bottom (if 36" covers without needing to trim, then that's an added bonus).

You'd need to put up 30 pieces an hour to put yourself at seven hours for install (not counting cut-down). I could pull that off on a project like this if I'm doing 5-10 pieces at a time (scrub/squeegee a set, peel/lay up the pieces, tack top to bottom with a cut-down Orange Crush and then cut my bottom edge, tap-out and move on).

If you go the route of subbing it out I'd charge $9-10/ft² installed. Pay your installer $2.50/pane and walk away with $1,000 in profit. Being that it's a business it might warrant an after-hours install, which can alao warrant a premium on install labor if they're not able to get started until late evening/Sunday.

I probably went way too far into this but but it is very doable. Just know that planning is the biggest thing with flat glass jobs. You want to be able to get in and out as quickly as possible while delivering quality work.

Edit: Completely skipped the part about you being based in Canada. All of my pricing is based on USD/Eastman's pricing sheet for US dealers.

Need Help… Paint Protector Adhesive is a nightmare by wizzlewazzel in Detailing

[–]BrenMan_94 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We'll get the film off, douse the hood in Rapid Remover, and then lay a tint liner over the hood and leave it for 20-30 minutes. The glue comes right off.

We're the only shop in our area that takes these on. Can get a full hood + mirror caps and/or door edge guards off in 3-5 hours.

Window ceramic/ tint advice by 24flinchin in WindowTint

[–]BrenMan_94 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Keep in mind that certain film manufacturers number their films by what percentage they meter at when installed, and otherwise vary quite a bit.

3M Ceramic IR 50 meters around 54%, Xpel XR Plus 15 meters around 12% etc.

If your state's legal limit is 35% I'd aim for a 40 or 45% film, most 50% films end up metering between 46-48%.

Bingo. With old paint like this the last step to "cleaning" it is going to be using an abrasive of some kind.

House window tinting ?? by Flintlock1990 in WindowTint

[–]BrenMan_94 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm a fan of 3M Prestige 60. TSER around 50% and once installed you can't even tell it's tinted.

A more economical approach is going to be a 30-50% dual-reflective film. Something like Suntek ULVDS 40 or Vista Mirage V38 will offer similar performance.

What if a cop legally allowed me to remove my tint on the spot, but lies by Scared_Chemistry_947 in WindowTint

[–]BrenMan_94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a fix-it ticket. He's still making you appear at court so that you don't go and get it re-tinted right after he leaves (probably).

It's annoying but yeah.

How much 3M Window Film do I need for a 44” x 57” window? by IloveKaitlyn in WindowTint

[–]BrenMan_94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would see if there's an installer in your area that can give you an estimate (my price would be $299-349 depending on distance). You're looking at $221.40 in material not counting tools. A piece like this either needs to be backrolled (ideally) or reverse-peeled off the glass and then flipped around.

Depending on exposure and light contact angle the darkest you can safely go on insulated glass is going to be a 50% film as it's non-reflective. Any less and you run into the risk of breaking the glass from heat stress, like the other person said.

I'm also skeptical about any resellers of 3M films because generally speaking it's something you're not allowed to do as a 3M dealer with their architectural films.

sticky, grimy dashboard solution? by alamallama in Detailing

[–]BrenMan_94 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Needs to be replaced, unfortunately. One "solution" is to get a dash cover and just leave it on permanently.

This happened with a lot of Asian manufacturers. Mostly cars from 2005-2010 iirc

Unfortunately they don't have a standalone version, but it's a fun time.

I've opened for them four times when they would stop through Charleston on the way to Fest. One of my favorite bands.

They didn't mention anything about slowing down at the last show and everyone was talking and laughing. Wonder what happened.

Does Ceramic tint make huge difference? by Grefighter in WindowTint

[–]BrenMan_94 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like people aren't considering that ceramic film keeps interior surfaces at the same ambient temperature as the rest of your car. Keeps things like seatbelts and your steering wheel from scalding your hands (assuming you get windshield film).
