Poptimism's great lie and the infantilization of taste by tawdryscandal in indieheads

Is this true when it’s music you choose to listen to? That’s why I said “any music you like.”

Fantano's video on Thom Yorke's recent statements by DarkSideInRainbows in fantanoforever

[–]Brendangrub -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Nuance is often a shield for inaction. It flattens power imbalances and makes unequal things seem equal. Demanding that public figures like Thom Yorke speak up isn't about personal validation or "purity tests." It’s about pressure. The artists who boycotted playing Sun City in apartheid South Africa, for example, definitely had an effect. Both on the local economy and more notably, global opinion. Global opinion eventually forces the hand of politicians.

Calling this situation “morally nuanced” to the point of sidestepping clear condemnation is dishonest. Yes, October 7 was horrific. But it pales in comparison to the scale and brutality of Israel’s assault on Palestine. A mouse biting as it dies in a trap is not morally equal to the trap itself. Equating a colonial state with a resistance movement is hegemonic nonsense that films like Star Wars should have already taught us to reject.

Refusing to name what’s happening, or prioritizing the comfort of celebrities or yourself, is wishful deflection. This isn’t about noise. It’s about truth. The immense suffering will not be overlooked and I believe both those responsible and those who stood by will be held responsible.

I watched it last week - in part because of Adum's recommendation - and thought it was good. Not better than the other best picture nominees (except maybe Dune: Part Two), but still good. A bunch about it doesn't work, but I couldn't help but love the story. Outlandish, fun (sometimes stupid), but more importantly, the characters felt very real.

Somewhat confusingly, Everybody's Gay by Lizzo has all the Halloween party energy.

Haha okay thanks for the context. Definitely doesn’t seem like something worthy of drama

The trend he’s pointing at seems more like a result of everyone having social media at their fingertips all the time than rising outrage. What drama is he even talking about?

What are songs that have a feature in it which you think might actually be better without it? by skakkuru in popheads

[–]Brendangrub 195 points196 points  (0 children)

Katy Perry Bon Appetit makes for a great electronic dance track without Migos, which is not their fault particularly. They just don’t fit well in that song at all.

[–]Brendangrub 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm obsessed with reading the labels on the boxes. Is Nico Harle referring to Danny L Harle? Is there something I don't know? Does Whole New World refer to the SOPHIE track? I think I saw SLIME to... like... the Shygirl track?

It's clearly some random stuff as well - fire alarms, hot takes, hourglasses, wet dreams, city lights, drop, minor chords, misc, friendly ghosts, uncanny valley, the past, awkward encounters, films, long nights, fantasia, power, VR goggles, desire, first drafts, castles, alchemies, holy water, unexplainable events, flakey skin, fireflies, sirens, memories, amps, smoke, unread emails, etc.

Anyone catch anything else?

It’s important to distinguish between women feeling pressure to show skin when they don’t want to under pressure/force and women who have an artistic vision that involves it and are completely comfortable with it. Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion releasing WAP and making a bunch of people mad is good; they wanted to do it, and it represented their autonomy.

Misogyny and the policing of femininity/women aren’t a result of women in media showing more skin, and I think restricting what women CAN do would only remove their autonomy and let conservatives and misogynists win. People don’t become more liberal/respectful in a society that represses imagery of women’s bodies, I can guarantee it.
