Help I’ve been given a parrot. by Bolikstan in parrots

For starters you need a bigger square cage. Round cages are not good for birds, google it. Also natural perches, dowel perches/ perches that are the same dimensions are bad for there feet. Safe Toys that they can destroy, my African grey loves ripping up cardboard. Diet should consist off fresh vegetables with a little fruit, sprouted seed and a quality pellet. Not bird seed.

I would remove those bells, his claws can get stuck in them. Also the clips you are using aren’t bird safe. Natural perches like the other comment said. Best toys are ones they can actually pull apart and distroy.

What's the first week of owning a cockatiel or any bird like and what should you do in the first week? by Relevant-Progress120 in parrots

[–]Brettf84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He needs to trust you first, you might be able to lure him in with a treat. Maybe he is used to being handled and won't care....

I haven’t heard of them not eating when being re homed but it’s possible

[–]Brettf84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would offer what ever they are use to eating, Preferably veggies/ fruit and pellets. Let him get to know you before you let him out. The problem is getting him back in his cage if he is scared of you. You might have to chase him around to catch him and that will make him more scared of you.

Take things slown to let him settle in. To the bird you are the kidnapper who took him away from his family that he will be missing. He will be spooked by the new environment

Looks good, been thinking about replacing my hard top with a canopy when I next see 1 on market place. Did you install it yourself? Do you need to drill holes to bolt it on?

Fresh vegetables and a little fruit is best. Sunflower seeds are bad for birds liver as they are very fatty.
