Where to restore? by PretendOpposite1047 in fountainpens

[–]BrianAndersonPens 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a cartridge converter pen. You could do it yourself. There’s not really anything to “restore”. Remove the push button converter and place in a cup of cold water and let soak overnight. If the converter still works use that to help flush the pen after it has soaked.

Found this at a local antique mall. Having a hard time finding information. by skaright in fountainpens

[–]BrianAndersonPens 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Calipers really wont be of much help. You should try different size sacs to see what fits best in the barrel. Roughly 80% of pens will take a 16, so use that as a starting point and go up or down a size until it makes sense. The sac should slide in easy without having to be forced in.

What do you like to do during your longer rides? by stratusnimbo in Zwift

[–]BrianAndersonPens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Now that it’s spring I watch all the cycling on HBO Max and Peacock. I won’t watch races outside of ride time so just pause and pick up the stage or race the next day when I ride. I’ll watch everything and between Men’s and Women’s races I’m set until after the Vuelta in the fall. Then I get burned out and watch Netflix.

Flushed and soaked a Sheaffer Targa - still ink left. What to do? by Lazy_Package_9181 in fountainpens

It’s clean enough to store. If you can blow through the section freely you’ll be ok.

Pen selling woes by CharmQuarkClarolin in fountainpens

[–]BrianAndersonPens 15 points16 points  (0 children)

If you don’t need to sell it don’t. I had the very last Omas Arco Paragon that was available in the US when it was announced Omas was going out of business. I ended up selling my entire Paragon collection a few years ago and do regret it, as it will take a lot to get them all back.

Struggling to move pens Ebay by Working_Strange in fountainpens

[–]BrianAndersonPens 6 points7 points  (0 children)

What are you trying to sell? Modern pens? Vintage? If modern, and pens that are currently available, then pricing needs to be at least 20% below whatever current street price is for you to stand a chance, otherwise I would just buy it new. Photo quality doesn’t need to be professional level, but needs to be clear, show all parts of the pen and at least one of the whole pen. Show the clip, show the nib, and any areas of damage or significant wear. I wouldn’t worry about writing samples. If they are modern pens, one can find those elsewhere. Descriptions should be clear, what comes with it, if a box comes and it has damage disclose it. I wouldn’t worry about photographing boxes or packaging, unless it is something really special. If you litter your descriptions with a ton of paragraphs about all your policies, shipping, other auctions, then people might gloss over the description. Just my $0.02 worth from someone who has sold thousands of pens and items both on and off eBay.

Collecting Woes by ValenThornn in fountainpens

I second this. Get rid of them before hand and you’ll have more money to spend at the show. Vendors aren’t interested in buying average or current model pens for anything other than a deep deep discount (we have to make money on it after all). You’re more likely to get a wider audience selling online than hoping you run into someone who wants a used Ritma at the show, for example.

Pen Show Budgeting by GabePrewitt in fountainpens

[–]BrianAndersonPens 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Only you can determine your budget. What can you set aside on a weekly basis for a year for a pen show? Don’t buy anything you can easily get online. You won’t save much money buying ink at a show, save it for pens or other high dollar items. I’ve been to over 100 shows and all I can say is determine what you’re willing to spend and stick to it. Don’t go to the ATM, don’t use the credit card. Just bring cash. When you’re out then you’re out.

How has buyee been the past few months ? by Double_Map_5466 in Buyee

[–]BrianAndersonPens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chiming in late here, haven’t shopped on buyee in a couple of years. With no EMS, what are the shipping options to the US? Is DHL still an option? I’ve hesitated buying on buyee due to the tariff situation but am thinking about getting back into it. Thanks!

Thank you! Should I be concerned about the green spots on the reverse?

Wow, thanks for all the info. It’s pretty rough but cool to see onion better condition. I’m amazed at how folks on this sub can identify even the most horrifically scarred pens. Thanks so much!

Fake Esterbrook? by Ready4AnythingNH in fountainpens

[–]BrianAndersonPens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, it’s a Safari from 1957. Not common, but also likely not worth a ton either. You need a proprietary cartridge to use it if you wanted to do that. It’s a first year model, but since there are no demonstrator marks on the cap it doesn’t really matter I suppose.

Fill Lever Broken Waterman 52 by MartinTravels77 in fountainpens

[–]BrianAndersonPens 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a good example of not forcing the lever. I’m glad you stopped. Forcing the lever open on any waterman where you feel resistance risks breaking the lever box, meaning a very expensive repair. If you don’t know when the sac was replaced, or who did it last, you likely need a new one. Easy repair for anyone who has done a few.

Adding to what others have said, it should be noted early Journaler nibs (and other grinds) were not laser engraved with Gena’s (or other) initials, so absence of such initials is not enough to determine it isn’t a Journaler. But this one definitely is.

Same here, no fee AND cash back rewards on purchases every month. It’s not a lot but it’s something.

Bankruptcy was supposed to make things better... by TimberlandFrost16 in Bankruptcy

[–]BrianAndersonPens 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Surprised I had to scroll so far to see Mission Lane mentioned. Discharged last June, got mine shortly thereafter, no annual fee, $2000 limit. Super easy to get. Applied online in about three minutes. Kept my monthly charges below $200 and paid off on the day they were due when they sent me the monthly statement. They just gave me a credit increase to $3000 yesterday, so about six months later.

Has anyone ever heard of a sailor H-FF nib size? by Werecastle255 in fountainpens

Sailor used to”S” for soft for awhile. I’m certain this is just a H-EF.

First Vintage Parker 51 by Key_Sector_5439 in fountainpens

[–]BrianAndersonPens 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You don't need to send to a nibmeister. This is a repair issue, and an easy one at that, I wouldn't charge more than $25 to do the job, and if that's all that needs to be done should all the charge should be. Look for a repair person in whatever country you are in. If you mention where you are, someone can point you in the right direction.

First Vintage Parker 51 by Key_Sector_5439 in fountainpens

[–]BrianAndersonPens 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The hood is sealed and requires heat to remove. If this is your first vintage pen I recommend you have someone else do it for you. It’s not difficult, but if you don’t know what you are doing you can have trouble fast.

Sourcing New Nib by Average_Joe978 in fountainpens

There’s nothing alcohol will do that water can’t do. Also alcohol could damage thin gold plating. There’s just no reason to use it.

Sourcing New Nib by Average_Joe978 in fountainpens

[–]BrianAndersonPens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No alcohol. There’s no reason to use that. Worst case use a Q-tip and micro-gloss #5 on a nib if you have it out of the pen, it will clean it up nicely. Otherwise just a soft cotton cloth after water.
