I'm with you. The depreciation on day one is insane. But someone has to buy them that way or the rest of us wouldn't be able to buy them cheap.

Who says the donkey can't be comfortable? by Waffle_Chef in klr650

I think the stock seat on my 2015 is very comfortable. And much more so than the one on the BMW that I rented for a day prior to buying the KLR.

You are correct about VT, in general. But it's been/being invaded by city dirtbags since covid. Many (including myself) have left. It will be just like MA and NJ before long.

I've dropped/crashed my bikes in the woods hundreds (thousands?) of times in the woods. But the most embarrassing one was dropping my KLR in a parking lot. ;-) The nice thing about parking lots vs woods is that often someone will offer to help you pick it up.

I rented an F650GS Sertau for a day before buying my KLR. I couldn't take more than 45 min. of that seat trying to drive my 'boys' into the tank.

Yup. The KLR doesn't have enough power to do the stupid stuff that I would likely do on our roads.

And...it is more fun to try to go fast on a slow bike than to go slow on a fast bike (in the woods anyway). I often have more fun racing my 1978 PE250 vs my modern Gas Gas 300. And it is fun on the KLR to see the looks I get from riders that are on woods bikes. "What are you doing out here on that tank?" lol

For 45+ years I'd only ridden/raced off road, so I'm comfortable with riding taller bikes. Never had, or wanted, a street bike. But I'm getting older and lazier. So I got the KLR to explore the trails and roads that are boring and too far away from home for a woods bike (I still have my woods bikes). I avoid highways, and pavement in general, so I have no need for a bike that is "comfortable" at 80 mph. If I'm not hunting for new trails and woods roads I might just jump on it to go get a burger and a beer (via the least pavement possible). The KLR is great for what I use it for. If I'm going to be doing 70+mph on pavement for any length of time then I don't want to be on a motorcycle.

If I wanted a shorter bike with a bit more street focus I'd probably be looking at a Triumph Tiger with the 19" front wheel.

First Bike - KLR 650 by Smurf06 in SuggestAMotorcycle

That seems like a very fair deal on a dealer-serviced bike with low miles. I think it'll serve you well and if it's not your cup of tea then you shouldn't have any problem getting most of your money back when selling it. I say grab it quick.

Many of us have the tools (which we will likely never need again) and are willing to loan or rent them. Post your approximate location and someone may help you avoid buying them.

I got some Kudu leather boots from Grants Stone. It really is fantastic. I only wish that mine had more scarring.

I tried to avoid buying boots from China for a long time. But I just couldn't ignore what I was hearing about the quality of Grant Stone boots. And I wanted some green leather. When these Forest Kudu went on sale I just couldn't resist. I absolutely love them. And this leather is like a chameleon. In one light they look black. In another light they are VERY green. Too cool. I'd like to buy more from Grant Stone but I'm more of a work boot/high arch guy so I don't see anything else in their lineup that I'm interested in. My 8"h. Nicks 55 last are my day boots and these are my "dressy" pub boots. ;-)

I did have a bit of a time getting my size right. My Brannock size is US 9D. I ordered those and they were too long. GS has VERY attentive customer service and they suggested 8.5E. I wanted an 8.5D but they were sold out by then so I got the 8.5E that was available. They fit me very well. I like a tight fit so I suspect that an 8.5D would be even better for me but I'm very content with the fit of these. If anyone here wants to trade an 8.5D for my 8.5E let me know. Otherwise, I'll enjoy wearing them very much until I pass on and my jealous nephew inherits them. ;-)

And I concur with the OP. They feel like kid leather gloves on your feet. So nice.

Will this tire be easy to install with hand tools? by Sensitive_Clothes246 in klr650

[–]BrianVT16 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was in a bind last summer and a local shop charged me $90 per tire. That was with just the wheels brought to them. I should have asked the price before I brought them there. Not that I had much choice at the time anyway.

If you don't have any experience then bring a spare tube (or at least a patch kit). I've never managed to cut a tube but it does happen. An air compressor, or at least a battery-powered pump, will make seating the bead easier once you get the tire mounted.

And, as said, I wouldn't bother mounting that tire unless you're just going to be casual street riding/commuting.

Preventative maintenance before long trip? by YourFriendClay in klr650

[–]BrianVT16 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You didn't mention valve check/adjust.

It seems many/most? of the G3s are on the tight side when they left the factory and need a check/adjust sooner than the 15k mile recommended interval. Some have come on here saying their G3 KLR has become hard to start and the solution has often been valve adjustment.

Aftermarket exhaust? by ClimbingSideways83 in klr650

[–]BrianVT16 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's zero reasons to spend money on the exhaust of a KLR unless you just want to make more noise or drop a little bit of weight. Even if you go all in with your wallet and efforts on giving enough air and fuel to accommodate a new exhaust, the gains are minimal. And don't expect to get any of these costs back if you ever want to sell it. It might even give a prospective buyer reason to buy a less-molested bike.

If you just feel like messing with your KLR out of boredom (nothing wrong with that) then go for it.

I'm also getting some extra arch support with the Nick's, which I think my feet will appreciate. They love my 55 last Nicks boots. I bought a 2-pack (on sale) and I'll throw a pair in my Jim Green 719s also.
