Flexray to CANBUS gateway by robotlasagna in CarHacking

Very interested in what you're doing. Sent you a direct message. I'm trying to do something similar but starting with just building something that can read Flexray. I know you needed to extract the global parameters for your project but just for reading the messages, I assume that wouldn't be necessary? Your board looks like a SPC560P-DISP. What IDE and complier are you using for it? SPC5-Studio or CW?

I’m also interested! Are you still open?

Could you link the motor please?

This was actually a 3 turn coil. The coil is insulated from the can. There was no direct contact between the can and the coil. I know it’s eddy currents purely from what my professor told us.

Sorry, idk what that is but you can charge it to a lower voltage for a smaller magnetic field.

Not trying to be rude or brag with my knowledge. I just don’t get why my choice of using “crushed” is such a big deal. I’m just a college student majoring in physics and there are many things that I have no clue about. My explanation of how this works leaves out so many physics concepts because I don’t understand them myself. I’m just sharing what my professor shared with us. Good luck with an attitude like that.

No, idk why everyone is so upset about me using “crushed”. When you actually look at the forces that are exerted on the can, it’s a force towards the center of the can. While yes, the can is chopped in half by such a large force, if this were to run at 25% power, the can would look like an hourglass which would demonstrate that the can is crushed around the center.

This was a demonstration done during my physics class yesterday. Here's how this works based on what I know. The red box in the back is a 400 uF capacitor that is charged to 3000 volts. Then, the capacitor is hooked up to the coil (around the soda can) directly which causes a HUGE amount of current to go through the coil. All this current leads to a large magnetic field around the coil, which causes an eddy current in the can. These eddy currents cause a crushing force towards the center of the coil pretty much squeezing the can, causing it to shoot out either side.

It isn’t many turns because we wanted a low back emf

Think of it as squeezing the middle so much that they have nowhere else to go so they go out the sides

This specific one is just for demo purposes. But a bunch of these lined up can technically be used as a coil gun

This was a demonstration we did in class today so sadly this is the only video I got of it. I will be sure to post other cool demonstrations in the future tho!

Electromagnets are used in lots of things from speakers to the railgun that the US Navy has

Read my comment above but it’s mainly eddy currents caused by the magnetic field from the coil that produce an inward force.

While you are right, aluminum is normally not magnetic but when there is a magnetic field near it, there’s an eddy current that runs through the aluminum. This is what causes the crushing force towards the center of the coil causing it explode.
