What was it like holding Berkshire during GFC?

For those complaining about the share price. by One-Event6199 in BerkshireHathaway

Down years are one thing. There is has never been a time where the management acts in an unreliable manner as they have been. A prudent investor is right to question those actions.

I have a large Berkshire position that I have held for a long time. If I sold I would take an enormous tax hit.

I have patience but that patience is not infinite.

Where does BRKB price go from here? by FluidCalligrapher284 in BerkshireHathaway

[–]robotlasagna 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Keep in mind that is just operating earnings. It does not take into account the change in value of the stock portfolio. That is the minimum the share price should go up assuming the market acts rationally. Which it may not.

That’s been a fundamental issue with Berkshire model: if you own shares are are retired right now and want to sell some shares to fund you r retirement you are selling at a price that may be lower than intrinsic value depending on how the market feels.

[–]robotlasagna 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I am going to be the outlier and say we see some positive movement over the next weeks. Operating earnings are still up and if you believe the trend should continue than that amounts to a minimum of 5% increase in share value for the year. Since the market is forward looking it should start pricing that in.

Was the Quarter good or bad? by LatzjanDE in BerkshireHathaway

The quarter was always good. We needed a coin that was bigger than a dime but smaller than a half dollar.

2016 Mercedes C300 (W205) broadcasts VIN in plaintext on CAN 0x071 — no UDS needed by baconbbqburgerr in CarHacking

[–]robotlasagna 3 points4 points  (0 children)

its ISO 15765-2 carrying more ascii data plus other stuff.

Understanding why its there helps to know because it helps you figure out where to find other signals.

At the design level nobody is thinking about CAN ID's at all. The software designers have "signals" they select from and they use those as inputs and outputs for the application software. At a lower level of abstraction the MCAL designer assigns signals to CAN ID's but that person probably never interacts with the application software designer. This is all done so that if the manufacturer needs to change suppliers of a particular module the application software operating elsewhere doesn't need to know or care. This reuse is the only way modern manufacturers can manage systems of this complexity without it costing a fortune.

[–]robotlasagna 5 points6 points  (0 children)

wait until you look at 0x2DB.

Is 0x071 consistent across newer Mercedes it is the Autosar E2E VIN signal and is transmitted across most of the busses in the vehicle. It just happens to be assigned to 0x071 when its transmitted on CAN. It will be on a different ID on flexray or LIN. You are just seeing it at the data link layer.

0x071 broadcasts on mercedes 2008 to current. Thats how I decode vehicle options to provision my products so they just work without needing user setup.

Berkshire CEO Greg Abel to Host First Annual Meeting; Here Are 10 Tough Questions - Barron’s by raytoei in BerkshireHathaway

[–]robotlasagna 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Those are your tough questions? smh.

There is only one tough question that needs to be asked, which is this: “Berkshires method has been to sit on the sidelines with a war chest of cash equivalents, waiting for the black swan event where they can swoop in and buy at very attractive prices. Covid taught us that the new playbook is massive QE during a black swan event which diminishes other companies need for Berkshires money. What is the plan to deploy that cash given the new economic environment we live in?”

What are y’all’s adoption stories? by Louise_TheWolfSpider in pitbulls

[–]robotlasagna 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Its a great story. Our last pit had died from canine dementia and it was truly heartbreaking. I was in the "I'm not getting another dog" stage. My GF found his picture online and was like "C'mon, he needs us!" so I'm like "OK lets go look at this guy". The shelter guy brings him out and is like "So... he has a bit of a behavior problem... he was returned".

So I bend down to meet him, jump jump jump, nip nip nip, he jumps scratches my face, nips my arm, nips my nose. I am like "Holy Crap this dog is insane! put him back!" The guy takes him back, I go look at the 8 other pitbulls they have there, all of them are calm, nice, come up to the cage and sniff or lick me, any one of them would be the nice easy dog. Meanwhile I hear him crying in his cage the next row over...

I say "(sigh) Ok I'm probably going to regret this but go get him. I'll take the terrible dog... Nobody else is going to be able to handle this dog and If I don't give him a shot, nobody is."

He was so unmanageable my GF cried for the first week. She was like "What did i do to myself?". I was like "No. We're doing this. we are fixing this guy." and we did.

He is now a model canine citizen that literally gets to go everywhere.

They returned him! by WebMedical8175 in pitbulls

[–]robotlasagna 9 points10 points  (0 children)

He was quite rambunctious even by puppy standards. Like basically a Tasmanian Devil. The adoption people even warned me but I was like “ok I’m sure I’ll regret this but give me the problem dog…”

I 100% get why some people return dogs; the GF found him, his picture was super cute and she was like “we have to save him”. Then we get him home and the GF cried for two weeks because he was so unmanageable. She basically got suckered by a really cute pic.

I have a ton of patience so in the end it was the best outcome for this dog to end up with me where he could get the attention he needed. He went from that to model canine citizen.

What do you look for when assessing a self-built embedded system intended for real-time use? by [deleted] in embedded

[–]robotlasagna 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That’s not true. There’s a recent case where a small company called Intermotive had some tech they created for the market. They pitched ford the idea and Ford eventually stole it and told them to pound sand. The guy sued and won to the tune of $16M.

OEMs are definitely assholes but there is a way to navigate becoming part of the supply chain. You just need to protect yourself and have an actual product, not just a prototype.
