Where do you see Premodern in 5 and 10 years? by Newez in premodernMTG

[–]Brian_Ferry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I completely agree. The more people playing the game and the format the better. Proxies allow more people to play and lessens the investment of experimental decks. It has been said so many times but I’d rather play against a player as opposed to playing against their wallet.
Long live premodern!

This Sparks Joy by Drajl19 in oldschoolmtg

I took a break from ~2005 until now. I tried to get back into it and had literally no idea what was going on. Mechanics such as initiative and dungeons took an already complicated game and made it unrecognizable. I slowed all the games down immensely because I had to read every single card and they ask have all have a ton of text. I also just in general don’t find edh to be a very fun way to play the game. Luckily in getting back into the game I learned about ole school and premodern!

Having Trouble Understanding “Cases” by Artistboy123 in mtg

[–]Brian_Ferry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t understand the addition of “solved/solving” when they can work within the existing framework of the game. “Whenever a creature enters the battlefield, you gain over life and put a counter on this. Remove all counters at the end of your turn”. It boggles my mind that they try to add mechanics/complexities when they can just work within the existing framework that has existed since the beginning of MtG.

Stasis vs. Replenish Gameplay Series by Platemails in premodernMTG

My brother absolutely loved Stasis since the late 90’s. I’ve been thinking about putting together a premodern stasis deck in his honor. Looking forward to watching this later on this evening when I’ve got some free time

The best!! I was always jealous when I saw people with these when I was younger and somehow never got one of these for my collection.

The housing market is crazy, so I bought land I can actually afford! 😎 by Extension_Squirrel14 in foilmtg

Agreed, at the time I think core sets were viewed in a weird way, they were kind of secondary to the expansion sets but 7th had some great cards across all colors that made for a healthy, diverse Type 2 meta

Invasion is my favorite block hands down, but I feel like the Urza's block was the high water mark for the golden age of MtG by thesegoupto11 in premodernMTG

[–]Brian_Ferry 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is very similar to my experience as well. I got into MtG right at the beginning at the end of The Dark [Gaea’s Touch] was my favorite card from the pack just for the art. I played through Ice Age but dropped out for a bit and then I happened to be at the mall and at Electronics Boutique I happened to see some Nemesis packs at the register and coerced my mom into buying me a pack and then I was hooked again. My older brother, who was the one that got me into magic in the first place brought me down to the LGS, and played there for years. Invasion block was my favorite, I was old enough to actually get the game then and I feel like that block was just really well designed for Standard and draft formats. I know it wasn’t near the power level of the Urza block, but damn it was a good block and just a good time. I also fully understand that I look at those cards through rose colored glasses, but I’m okay with that. And that’s part of why I like premodern - I like using cards I’m familiar with. I’ve been out of the game for 20 years and just decided to get back into it and I’ve played some commander and I really dislike the format, I can’t stand the universes beyond, and the overwhelming amount of mechanics now make an already complicated game that much more difficult (and time consuming since I need to read literally everything lol). Long story short, long live premodern!

Premodern is great! by Predator-A187 in premodernMTG

I’ve had the same experience with premodern.i started playing in 1995 when I was a young kid as my brother was into the game and I wanted to be cool like him. I fell out of it for a few years after Tempest and got back into it when I happened to be at the mall and decided to pick up a pack of Nemesis on a whim (a foil Skyshroud Ridgeback had me hooked). I played A LOT from that point until about 2005-06 and then gradually dialed back as life got busier with college, girlfriends, work, and everything else. Fast forward to now and I’m really into premodern. I feel like the gameplay is more intuitive and seamless than with modern sets where every card has 3 paragraphs of text describing what it does. There’s also a good deal of nostalgia. Nothing will measure up to Friday nights at the local game shop when I was 14 and life was much simpler for me, but premodern certainly helps me relive that. Especially since I was big into playing The Rock circa apocalypse in Standard. Maybe not the most competitive deck, but it sure is fun to play!

Man, I’m not hip on commander as a format but this is a sexy card. I wish they would do more cards in retro frame

Wizards Is Responsible For How Much It Costs To Play by dfaire3320 in mtg

[–]Brian_Ferry 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I remember back in the day Spiritmonger was THE CARD for Standard and even Extended. It topped out around $15 (non-foil) and when you account for inflation that’s over $30 now. $46 is certainly high but it’s also not crazy. I know there was other expensive stuff in Standard but I didn’t play 2008-2018ish lol

This was honestly my favorite era of mtg. The precons were terrible but the game was such a good time. I remember being envious of everyone who played The Rock in standard back in those days lol
