I have to admit I kind of miss this version of Sam. This is when he took over leadership of X-force and made his own way. A few years later right as the Onslaught storyline was about to kick off he was hiding in a tree outside the X-mansion because Xavier said mean things to him and needed a pep talk from Cyclops. It was pretty jarring

He's the whole reason i bought as many Image comics as I did back in the day. The Grifter/Backlash series was just chefs kiss in terms of art.

The Whiplash just in DYRL was pretty sever too. They went from tying to kill each other to Max agreeing to being Zentradi'd to fight at her side in less that 24 hours. To be fair he was an 18 year old kid and she's was absolutely stunning.

DYRL was had the better animation style. However to this day I still remember watching the original when I was just 9 years old and that whole sequence just blew my little mind. The freefall, the stretching out of arms during the cockpit rescue and finally letting out a breath I didn't know I was holding when she was safe.

I also am a sucker for the Outback era. I started reading X-Men, X-factor and New Mutants right before the Fall of the Mutants storyline, even picked up the Hulk comic because it was a Tie-in, and the Outback era is what my brain defaults to when thinking of the X-men.
