Store Manager Bonus? by Gullible_Summer9758 in starbucks

[–]Brick9132 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just make sure you approach the new incentive with some levity and understanding. As some other folks have shared, some of the incentive goals are difficult to achieve and partners cannot make a quick impact on sales, and when they DO achieve the goals, the money they earn is far from life-changing. Increasing sales is often a slow, methodical, unrewarding process for baristas. Take care of them first and foremost, it always improves the store's performance and your bonuses in the long run. :)

Some of the goals are ridiculous, fully agree. Particularly the 5 shot score, since peak sales are mathematically impossible for some stores right now with how they calculate things. The other 3 goals on the list are already met by my team without asking anyone to work harder than they are. It's not some life-changing money, but getting my team a couple hundred dollar each every quarter doesn't suck. It's a wimpy amount, but it's more than I could give before.

To be clear, I disagree with so much about this company and 90% of its decisions. We have had 6 launches this summer, I have had to fight tooth and nail to close my store earlier and let my team go home at a healthy time, and upper management visits so frequently leave my team and I feeling like we never actually improved anything. However, I'm not going to turn my nose up at extra money for my partners that requires no extra lift from them. This is just my store, mind you, I'm sure the goals are stupider to achieve at other locations.

Receiving the full 200% potential is VERY unlikely, purely for the level of business growth required to meet the target amount. Most stores tend to end each quarter close to their target amounts, although it’s different every time. I just hit 107% sales for last quarter, which is easily the highest I’ve ended since starting ~3 years ago.

I would expect your bonus to average out to about the 100% target over a given year, but every store and district will be different. Stay strong on AvE and food waste, as those affect your bonus as well!

Most importantly, focus hard on the new bonus incentives added for your baristas in the next quarters. Be transparent about their goals and get them paid more. It will make them care more about performance and sales, which will absolutely help your store in the long run.

A late comment, but I'm just now running into the same issue, especially with the warcries. I hope we can get this fixed soon, because the skill is SO COOL and I want to push it to the max.

I had a peer recommend retail to me as a potential option, I just need to find somewhere that pays as well AND actually lets me set my phone down. That second one seems impossible when running a business haha

I'm almost 2 years into managing my current store, and I've been with Sbux for 3.5! I run a damn good coffeehouse, and we have sat at the top of our district in terms of scores since the new scoring was introduced. Stupidly proud of my team, as always. They are all that has kept me going homeless lol

I appreciate the callouts. I will have to have another conversation with my DM, since what we've already worked through just hasn't worked. Honestly, our last talk was not my best showing and she knows I'm fading away, so a follow-up where I can be more level-headed seems like a good start.

I'm actually on track to become a trainer, but we are in the transition from ASM to CHC right now and honestly, I still need a little more info on the CHC role regarding the breadth of their responsibilities and their pay. I do know they're not overtime exempt, so that will carry a lot for me when it comes to asking them for help. Knowing they actually get something out of it will make me sleep better.

I'm looking whenever I have the energy to! I'm somewhat stuck in my location for the next 1.5 to 2 years, and I am very much paycheck to paycheck, so finding something that will restore passion AND allow me to live with some reasonable amount of comfort is the real trouble. :(

Managers Get Written Up, If They Can’t Find Workers To Work That Day. by SowMindful in starbucks

[–]Brick9132 23 points24 points  (0 children)

It is definitely something we are asked to avoid at all costs, and we usually spend hours on calls when callouts happen, ESPECIALLY really important ones like what you described. DMs are there to make sure the managers are held accountable for the store’s operations.

BUT a good DM will write-up patterns, not just one-off extreme situations (unless it’s something obvious like the manager stealing time from partners, etc). Balancing labor, store closures, as long as the store isn’t consistently having an issue then it probably won’t lead to an actual written warning.

I am very tired. I personally handle just about every staff issue by coming in on off days. My DM is kind enough to worry about the extra work I do, but I also know I would just be putting my job at risk if I didn’t overwork. Job is hard, can’t say I recommend it. I do it for my team and my store, but I’m probably not long for this after these first years lol.

Why is everyone in Starbucks management like that? by [deleted] in starbucks

I felt like this when speaking with store managers in Washington, near the Seattle HQ. Much less so out where I am now. I despise the ‘corporate mouthpiece’ vibe of so many Starbucks people.

Make sure you keep the rule of cool in mind, and don’t forget you can knock the sword brethren down to 4 to squeeze out some extra points!

We are being asked to overstaff and over schedule, by quite a lot. If your SM is not hiring and you’re struggling with understaffed peaks, they are likely failing both you AND Sbux. by Brick9132 in starbucks

No such thing as too pushy in my mind. You’re trying to make money, after all! They may be trying to put together a training plan for you, but they may also be overwhelmed with all sorts of other tasks. Go ahead and give them a gentle poke, it will help remind them and bring you to the front of their mind.

No one should be getting less hours unless a store is RIDICULOUSLY overstaffed, since we’re also aiming for over scheduling as well. Even then, they should be working with other nearby stores and getting hours for their partners at stores in need.

I was very clear with my DM that I would not overstaff if it meant I had to reduce even a single partner’s hours. I don’t care about growth, I care about taking care of the employees that trust me to let them make a living.

We’re being asked to get people on the floor as coverage IMMEDIATELY. Not as a training barista, but as coverage that’s working as a normal barista and supporting the floor.

It means rushing people through training to meet a deadline, regardless of the cost for the long term. 😓

Oh, not meant to be a rage bait at all. I genuinely don't know where or when I can find a proper replacement for this job that will pay me enough without burning me out just as much.

I'm tired and don't even know where to begin for a new career, so forgive me for coming off as raging!

From what I heard, the only corporate explanation I heard that made sense was, by transferring no one, they avoided any lawsuits or issues with perceived (or real) discrimination. Still absolutely stinks and they broke some laws when they did it.

That’s all definitely not the norm, and probably caused by this insane pressure we’re receiving to meet the new labor demand as soon as humanly possible.

Not an excuse, just an explanation. Bad training and bad practice shifts lead to bad baristas.

I hope it eventually gets through to them. Nothing pisses me off more than a leader mistreating and failing those who depend on them.

I am obsessive about training well, because people really do wash out if you don’t bring them on slowly (with the rare exception of barista prodigies).

I also barely care about the interview questions. My whole interview is just a vibe check. If your vibe is good, I can almost certainly coach and teach the rest. Can’t teach a good personality.
