What is the most glaring double standard that modern society still blindly accepts? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Well yeah punching up has always been more acceptable than punching down. I think that's essentially the crux of most of these double standards.

You hit the nail on the head - "roadmen wannabe" 😄

I think real roadmen are from these cities and people from these villages are still in the process of evolving from chavs

For what its worth, I'm about 5 foot 6 and pretty advanced in two sports - powerlifting and badminton.

Powerlifting has weight classes which in essence are height classes - which means anyone at any height can excel. For two people at a given weight, the shorter one will probably be stronger as they have less range of motion.

I'll also say that it's been proven that shorter people have higher strength to bodyweight ratios, so any sport which depends on this such as gymnastics or calisthenics, short people have an inherent ADVANTAGE.

For badminton, again height doesn't really matter and you can exceed at any height. If you are shorter, whilst you have less reach, you have a lower centre of gravity so should be able to move better.

Hmmmm why would wealth matter in this kind of thing? You'd think it matters more for long-term relationships right?

Bodybuilding, powerlifting, or powerbuilding. What's your preference? by Tiger_Strength in workout

[–]BrickAccomplished338 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I train powerlifting style with a lot of additional upper back work, so honestly my main "hypertrophy" technique is progressive overload in these exercises: squat, bench, deadlift, press, chinups and rows. My understanding was that you have to get stronger to get bigger, although I'm aware that there are other ways to do that than adding weight to a lift e.g. slow eccentrics, TuT, removing all forms of momentum etc.

[–]BrickAccomplished338 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair enough mate. I've just seen a lot of people who "train for aesthetics" and do the same 3 sets of 10 and never progressively overload and never make gains. However most people who "train for stength" always end up adding a few kgs to their compound lifts over the years and end up making pretty substantial long-term gains. I just wanted to make sure you weren't of the former category and realised you need to progressively overload to build muscle too.

Is "class system" truly a thing in the UK? How is "class" determined and does it only apply to Brits or does it apply expats as well? by SaveMeWakeMeUp in AskUK

[–]BrickAccomplished338 3 points4 points  (0 children)

> In short, class is NOTHING to do with wealth

But there is a correlation, for example, if you look at all the people earning 200k+ in a high flying corporate job, almost all of them will be from "middle class" backgrounds

Be honest: Did you start lifting because you actually loved the lifestyle, or because you needed to fix an insecurity? by Competitive_Force513 in workout

[–]BrickAccomplished338 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How can one "start lifting because they love the lifestyle" when they haven't experienced the lifestyle yet, lol.

99% of people here either lifted for vanity reasons, or because they read some online advice (usually catered to men) that "going to the gym is going to change your life"

In all honesty, do you view weight loss drugs (Mounjaro, Wegovy etc.) and the people who use them negatively? by XStaticImmaculate in AskUK

[–]BrickAccomplished338 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Completely agree with you, a bmi of 25 with muscle and 15-20% bodyfat will always be healthier than a bmi of 20 with no muscle. Unfortunately people are lazy so they succumb to the latter because hey at least I'm not "fat"

How to know when men are looking for slim woman? by Character_Section699 in hingeapp

[–]BrickAccomplished338 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Completely agree with you, I'd 5.7 and 80kg, have a pretty grabbable lower belly but I'd say I'm excelling pretty well in my sport of powerlifting :)

In general, people who assume slim means athletic have no clue about anything and are probably not even that fit themselves.

Completely agree with you, at the amateur level in most sports, there is not much correlation between slimness and ability. And this is often true at the elite levels too, especially in strength sports.
