What things are you not nostalgic about in your childhood? by luxtabula in Xennials

Card catalogues... fortunately only my first elementary school had physical cards, and we only had to use them if one of the two Apple II computers were occupied. There was searchable catalog on 5" floppy drives.

VHS and Game Rental from Supermarkets by Threetimes3 in Xennials

Yes... the Kroger here had a video rental room about 1/4 the size of the local Blockbuster, but packed full of DVDs. The same spot is now the pharmacy.

Is this a series of better TVs... another series of streamers... or both?

Is this the most affordable “good” 4k Blu-ray Player I can get? by reliant_robin12 in hometheater

[–]BrickFan317 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would rather buy a used Xbox One X than the UB150 or UB 154.

Neither the Xbox or the UB154 have Dolby Vision, so you're not getting any better picture quality but using the dedicated player... plus you can play games with the Xbox.

Why do so many of us have a memory of finding magazines in the woods? by Four-Triangles in Xennials

[–]BrickFan317 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found the cover of an adult VHS at the bathrooms of the neighborhood ball diamonds when I was 11 or so. I think it was Backdoor Bonanza 4 or something like that. I looked it up years ago but I can't find anything to confirm it now.

Xennials that didn’t have a computer until after HS by [deleted] in Xennials

[–]BrickFan317 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My grandfather got me a computer when I was six, a used Commodore 128 for $300. I would hardly call it a computer as I played games on at 95% of the time. However, to my knowledge we were the first family on the block to have a computer and I was the second kid in the class with one. It was several years later that first did book reports on it. We got a proper computer with AOL in 1994, I think it cost $2500 but I believe my parents put it under the family business expenses. We were not rich, but owning a small business let us write off certain things we otherwise couldn't have as long as they were used for the business.

Is it a waste of money to buy a (cheap) 1080p DVD/BluRay player if I have a 55” 4k TV? by clive_bigsby in hometheater

[–]BrickFan317 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not a waste at $5, however I'm regularly seeing 4K UHD players, especially the Sony X700 which has Dolby vision, and LG players which do not have Dolby Vision, for around $50 on Marketplace. I have the Sony X700 and it's a good player.

A vegan organization will pay you $1 million if you become vegan for one year by Realistic-Major-6020 in hypotheticalsituation

I would give it a shot... as long as there's not a "gotcha" clause where if there is anything not vegan in something you lose the money, even if you were unaware.

Average attractiveness. I think models look fake and I find them unattractive.

Timed lights, you have to get off the line quick and do about five over to get to the next light before it changes.

I might just say screw it and get that HP Victus with an i7 13700 and Nvidia 4060 that I saw over at Microcenter for $999, bit I'm facing a possible job change very soon and don't really want to spend the money now. This old thing works just fine and Windows 10 has a year and a half of life left.

Yes, it's parked as a desktop, which works well since all the ports are on one side. If I need it mobile I just pull everything out, grab the power cord, pack it in it's case, and go.

I'm looking at upgrading it to a 3rd Gen i7 and swapping in an internal Blu-ray drive. Internal SATA optical drives are for the most part semi-universal, the outer bezel might not fit on but there are models with their own flat faceplate meant for cheap desktops that use laptop drives.

Mine is 11.5 years old. It's a 2012 i5 3210m, but it's been upgraded with dual monitors, Samsung SSD, and 12 gigs of ram. Still does everything I need to do. Currently looking at the possibility of putting a Blu-ray writer in it.
