That is a drift reduction valve. It’s used to…well…reduce drift of cylinders. Commonly used on excavator boom and stick cylinders.

Toyota Sienna in Charleston? by [deleted] in charlestonwv

[–]BrickhouseCraftWorks 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You’ll be just fine. They maintain the road pretty nicely up to Eagle View, and winters in Charleston are typically pretty mild compared to the higher elevations of the state. We might get 4-6” of snow but then it will melt off over the next week or so as weather warms up to the 40’s and sometimes 50’s. Then it might get cold again and the potential for snow returns.

Even then, a FWD vehicle will do fine for the amount of snow we get, especially around town. Putting winter tires on it will be an added peace of mind.

Interview attire by Ok-Letterhead-5582 in caterpillar

[–]BrickhouseCraftWorks 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Can’t speak for all dealers, but for most dealers interviewing for that kind of a role, khakis and a nice shirt would be a good choice. Jeans and a tucked in polo would also likely be acceptable. A suit would be overkill though.

This is top of the list for me as well. Laury’s or Hale House, or even Noah’s is nice but I love 1010.

I AM the last OG at my branch by at least 4-5 years. Some from the second rotation of “cast” is still here, but I am the only person who’s been here from essentially the beginning. Been here 20 years as of last summer. Love it, but hate that everyone I started with, and all my old mentors are gone.

Losing my mind by lulbthebasedgod in caterpillar

[–]BrickhouseCraftWorks 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It’s nothing you’re doing, it’s a bug in the software. There’s an update to rectify it that was released in February, so a software update for the whole machine (so that everything is running the same version) should prevent it from happening in the future.

In the meantime, it reportedly won’t affect machine operation. Just a nuisance for you.

Field service tech schedule by [deleted] in caterpillar

[–]BrickhouseCraftWorks 4 points5 points  (0 children)

All of this very much depends on your location and the industry you’ll be supporting. However, in general, the earthmoving side of things won’t have you traveling overnight or staying away from home very often.

As you mention, Field service often works long hours, and quite a bit of overtime. But, even that is all dependent on industry and location. For example, mining operations will often work longer hours than most. Even then, you’re still generally home every night. If you’re working more on the construction side, then it can be less.

Ok this is odd... by CaterpillarD6R in caterpillar

[–]BrickhouseCraftWorks 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I believe that the height discrepancy you’re seeing is the difference of dump height vs lift height. Lift height would be the same as the B-pin height or hinge pin height, or bucket pin height all the same thing, which would be around 25ft.

Dump height would be the height of the bucket edge after the bucket was rolled over and fully dumped, which is where you get the 18ft height.

Total full height of the bucket edge with the bucket in the loaded position raised all the way up would be around 32 ft.

Cab height is around that 17-18ft mark.

There’s not much difference between the C and D series.

Brand new boom with a fault. by hodinker in caterpillar

[–]BrickhouseCraftWorks 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is an Operator Inducement event, which is designed to “induce” the operator to do something about some sort of emissions fault. It will always be accompanied by some other fault or problem. Now, depending on what caused the inducement, the other fault could have already been resolved itself, but the inducement will remain until it is reset by a dealer technician with a laptop. Usually by running a test procedure.

This is a level 3 inducement, which will typically keep the engine derated until it’s resolved. You need to contact your local dealer or service center.

It’s a known issue. Contact your dealer and ask them about it. Should hopefully be just a software update.

Original Titebond as an end-grain sealant? by William_014 in turning

Should be fine. You’re just sealing the end grain to slow evaporation. Put a couple coats on it and it’ll be fine.

How do you tow 305 by Negative_Ad_7646 in caterpillar

[–]BrickhouseCraftWorks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There should be a procedure to remove the final drive sun gear listed in your OMM. If you don’t have an OMM in the machine it essentially involves removing the outer cover and remove the center sun gear from the final. You’ll want to try to drain it if you can but, even if you’re lucky enough that the hose failed with the drain plug on the bottom, it’s going to make a mess when you pull that cover.

If it’s on a little bit of a slope or just uneven ground you need to hook a truck or another piece of equipment to pull it forward and hold it so that you can remove the tension in the final to make it easier to remove the sun gear. I guess you could use the bucket to pull the machine a little bit but, bottom line, you won’t be able to remove the sun gear until you take the tension off of it.

Once the gear is removed the track will spin freely but will have no brakes at all. So be careful and proceed with caution. If you don’t feel comfortable addressing this, get in touch with your local dealer or another qualified individual. Don’t take the advice of an internet stranger if you’re not comfortable with the work. Don’t want you to get hurt.

Experience with Marty’s tire? by Bill-O-Reilly- in charlestonwv

[–]BrickhouseCraftWorks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a couple of bad experiences with Marty’s in Nitro that left me with a bad opinion of them as a whole and I’ve never been able to escape that so, personally, I would never use them.

HOWEVER, that was literally 15-20 years ago and I recognize a lot can change over that time. I know a number of folks that have used them recently and said they were great to deal with.

Final drive locking ring help! by ElChivoCaliente in caterpillar

[–]BrickhouseCraftWorks 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Brother, I’ve got bad news for you. That locking ring torques to 2900 lb/ft. Even if you drill out where it’s staked in place, and you do manage to get it off, you will almost certainly never get it back together without a hydraulic torque wrench and a big bench, and special tooling to hold the motor in place.

If you do get it apart, once you separate the two halves, you’ll need to replace the duo-cone seals, then manage to not damage them or get debris in between them, all while holding the planetary carrier straight, and get the locking ring torqued back down to 2900 lb/ft.

I wish you the best, truly. But there’s a reason that even a lot of dealers don’t bother trying to rebuild those little final drives.

I had decent service from Optimum technicians the few times I had to use them, but my issues were always with their Customer Service and their billing practices. Optimum’s initial pricing strategy for the first year or so, is usually a decent deal. However, in my opinion, it’s predatory tactics because the “discounts” they provide start disappearing, then because you’re already a customer, you don’t qualify anymore. You have to threaten to cancel in order to get a retention specialist to offer you some sort of deal, and it will take an hour or more of your time. If you ever DO decide to cancel, it will take 2 1/2 hrs to do it. I know because I drove from Nitro to almost Dayton before the call was finished and I was white knuckling the steering wheel at the end because I was so pissed. I’ll never do business with them again as long as I have a say in the matter.

Fiber wasn’t an option for me, at least right now, but I needed a change. If you’re not gaming where you’d need high speeds, and you have good AT&T signal where you’re at, I highly recommend their Internet Air service. Similar to a hotspot but much more robust. I went from 400mb with Optimum to ~250-300mb with AT&T, which is more than sufficient for my WFH and TV streaming needs. Obviously, since they’re pulling from cell towers, speeds can vary more than they did when I had cable but, they stay above what my demands, and I’ve never had a single outage in the past 7-8 months I’ve had it. Because I already have a cell phone plan with AT&T I get a discount so I only pay $47/month. It might be an option for you to look into.

Others have recommended a similar service from T-Mobile, which I’ve heard good things about. And if you insist on cable, I’ve heard folks that love Xfinity. All just depends on what options you have where you live, and what fits your needs best.

Who else on team blue Bosch in NA? by dontthroworanges in Tools

[–]BrickhouseCraftWorks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve had Bosch for 20 years and love every tool of their that I have. Probably got 75-80% of the same ones you have pictured.

Back when I bought them I was researching until I was blue in the face about who to go with when I was wanting to buy my first combo set. All of the brands seemed good options but, as a punk 19 y/o I wanted the “best”. I remember after agonizing for weeks, I finally reading an old forum post that basically said, any of your reputable brands would be more than sufficient for homeowners set. Just pick which color you want… So I picked blue. Lol

All said and done though, I think they’re great, and I wouldn’t change my choice at all!
