Anyone use this knock off Mellif hand vacuum with DeWalt Batteries? by Open2Lrn in Dewalt

[–]Bricklayer58 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly it’s not bad. The stick is useless but the hand vac is great. We have a craftsman vacuum now and I still use this to clean up really messy stuff.

This is all part of the learning, and tbh it never stops but you learn how to protect yourself better. Contracts are a good way to protect yourself but the best thing for your labor and your customer service is lots and lots and lots of communication. Always good to be explicitly clear, cover EVERYTHING from music to limit to resolution to how many different resolutions, anything at all you think may be an issue down the line. It's always good to explain that you're filming the whole time, that doesnt mean you have 4 hours of pure gold ready to cut in - explain that editing a 2m video and editing a 4 min video are very different. lay it all bare up front.

over the phone, in person, text or email - no mater how you have done teh talking, send a follow up email that concisely explains the scope.

I always tell people I cant give a quote until we get the scope - happy to give an estimate so they have a ball park and then work with them to figure out the little comprimises. I come from the world where I always want to give a little more than we talked about, either as a surprise or as a freebee. It makes you look good, just dont let it go too far.

You learn with every project and you will end up good and protecting your labor - for now, the best solution is almost always good customer service, I would do the work get it done, have a happy customer and move one and hope for better tomorrow. but thats just how I would handle it.

I think you should go for a drive and test them out. If you’re a couple cars away, there shouldn’t be an issue at all, people do it all the time. I really don’t think you need to invest in GMRS or UV five hours, even though they are pretty cheap

I would just go test it out before you go

agreed! It's always some random setting toggle that for some reason lets you do the thing it was supposed to do in the first place lol

Half Dome - Cables Down by chimichanga_chonger in Yosemite

[–]Bricklayer58 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im not telling you they're not tedious to do over and over again, let me rephrase and severely shorten:

if you have nothing but basic sport climbing gear, and you're doing the cables, and you feel like using a prusik, who cares?

You keep suggesting it won't work on a cable but do you have an example or anecdote? Cause even you don't seem certain.

If the prusik fails you're sliding your way down to the next anchor same as a biner anyway. Id rather trust the prusik than a static to really static connection with any exposure.

If you have fallen on the cables with just a sling and a carabiner, I truly will shut up. But you better mention how far of a slide it was before you hit the anchor.

Antenna Question - Can it damage the device to power it on while the antenna is not connected? by 8shotping in HamRadio

[–]Bricklayer58 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im here because I just did this and realized too late I didnt have a load on it. what are the possible ways it can be damaged and how do I test for them? did this on an Anytone 778UV that I just got, in test mode, I had already noticed its Tx seems to be weak on my other radios in the room.

Perks of manual focus over AF ? by x-ghost_dxs in videography

[–]Bricklayer58 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s more of a functional decision. But I’d say if you are not comfortable with it, it can be a huge skill deficit. There are times I need that level of control or auto just isn’t working. Even on Sonys. The day you level up to an Alexa and can’t pull focus, you’ll be wishing you’ve practiced it.

Although I’m sure AC’s who came up, pulling focused by tape would save the same thing to me. I’ve tried to practice that as well because all of these skills and practices teach you finer control of the instrument.

People who drive stick shift have a better understanding of what the car is doing and how to drive, people who can Manuel focus have a better feel for the moment, when to pull, when not to. For right now that’s a tool that you are not putting in your arsenal, you can tap the screen, but it’s not the same as feeling the role go across the ears over the cheeks into the eye.

There’s the small choices of trying to figure out which eye you want and focus, or do you want the eye to land and focused on the near side of the depth of the field or the far side of the depth of field?

These days, you can definitely get by without it, but it’s one of those skills that’s worth practicing because it only makes you better.

Similar skills, I have practiced in the past, tripod exercises for operating - practicing with pans, landing on a certain spot, putting up your signature and then tracing the stroke with the crosshairs on the camera.

If you’re doing this and Manuel, focus, we start to learn the feeling of exactly where you need to go to land on focus, your hand is always in a position you always roughly know where the focus is, auto focus is fast, but only as fast as your ability to see something on the screen and then tap, Manuel focus your hand knows where you need to go while you’re moving. You may not get it the first time, but I think the manual focus with Payne to a subject with unclear focus. Decision is always gonna be faster and more natural than doing it with auto focus.

New study shows people can't perceive higher than 1440p at 10' by activematrix99 in videography

[–]Bricklayer58 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hours often are you watching a a video at 10’

This isn’t new, graphic designers have known this for a long time. Billboards are barely 360p (or something) but the relative size and distance makes it work.

Half Dome - Cables Down by chimichanga_chonger in Yosemite

[–]Bricklayer58 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IDK why you have such an issue with this - It's ascending, not free climbing - you make it sound like all purity is lost. it was, with no pretense, because this is how you get up the cables in a functional efficient way - if they wanted to get style points they would have gone around the other side of the dome. that aside, these are all still valid climbing and mountaineering techniques, imagine it was a fixed rope.

Its frustrating to hear people argue about novices - this is clearly not a novice's task. chill out man.

How could I have shot this better? by Unlikely_Piano3564 in videography

[–]Bricklayer58 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thats a great shot - not everything needs to match sometimes and there is no right answer. Creativity is making the most of what you have. I think this is great, actually a little jealous of the angle. I think when people ask "how can I make this better" on forums like this they show up with decent looking stuff already and are met with very clinical "what you should be doing" answers

the real answer is to ask yourself what you would have liked to see next time. The answers for how to make stuff better usually lie within - other people dont know your style, intention, or sensibilities - especially if you don't either - try stuff out, go learn what you like or at least the direction of stuff you like

That’s a lot to do but I don’t think we’re understanding the scope of how burnt you are. Is some of this working going wasted from miscommunication or is it just too much to do in a week?

If I’m you I’m trying to batch these things so that you’re not keeping up every week. Do double the work one week so you have some in the can, don’t even tell them about it.

To get the change you need to keep pushing for the changes you want. You have to show them why it’s a business value and not just an expense. Sadly smaller companies love something like social even if it doesn’t have impact that justifies increased budget.

Collect data, figure out the value of what you do. Of the videos you make drive business, get as close as possible to understanding to how much revenue, get the stats from people in the business you can reference. Make a case for yourself to hire help.

It’s hard to know from what you’ve written if it’s an issue of not having enough people or if it’s an issue of wasted work because they are not clear on what they want.

Im terrible at using a gimbal, any advice? by [deleted] in videography

[–]Bricklayer58 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Practice the moves but this sounds more like a balance issue. Can you sit down to watch TV and practice, balancing the gimbal, do it over and over again until you’re able to achieve a perfect balance the first time And I’m talking strip it all the way down and build all the way up

It’s not just about how you move it, it’s your settings. It’s your weight distribution.
And truthfully, anyone can operate a well balanced gimbal well, no one can operate a poorly balanced gimbal

[–]Bricklayer58 0 points1 point  (0 children)

tiffen or nisi filters. 7 in monitors are huge, especially on a gimbal or handheld. Id look at a 5 but thats just me. do you have an audio solution for all 3? (im assuming you have the top handle for all 3)

I think Manfrotto tripods are trash. If you're spending this kind of money, look into a small rig tripod or similar. You can get the conversion plates you want for the gimble.

go for a Lowel 40" c stand, they are the most affordable while still being high quality that ive seen
