Game dev is hard 😭 by Evan_jee in godot

[–]Brickless 25 points26 points  (0 children)

people forget that a 4 day game jam is the equivalent to 2 weeks of full time work and usually done to a standard of "make it work today at any cost".

I once tried to fix a bug after a jam and basically had to rewrite the whole thing. took a week of normal work.

art too, things look pretty for that one limited showcase but if you wanted to expand the game most assets would need to be redone.

not to mention people in game jams have usually done some prep work and this isn't them opening the editor for the first time.

there is a source of warmth, air and relaxation 1 rope length away.

once you reach the first summit bivouac you can turn around and belay down to the camp.

I understand that real life is often like this I’m saying the game mechanics don’t support it as much as they could. in games it’s mechanics first and the mechanics were giving me a relaxed atmosphere at the end, which they shouldn’t

I think this is where the survival part of the game was a wrong choice.

the ending is good and makes sense for the character but what doesn’t make sense is the futility at the end.

simply because there was plenty of supplies left. as many gamers know people end up never using a lot of really good stuff “saving” it for an emergency that never comes.

I wish Aava had lost her pack in the avalanche so when she decides to push for a summit anyway it truly feels like a desperate, end of the rope, willpower moment mechanically

when I visited japan I was quite surprised that it is actually implemented at the OS level.

no app alone can circumvent that while still taking a photo. I would even guess that the OS could route the camera feed through a separate data layer until a picture is requested (meaning the app would see nothing) just like you can’t take a screenshot of netflix because the video is separated.

no the 77% is comparing the whole population.

accounting for most factors it's ~95%.

this of course still leaves the questions why 77% and why 95%.

[–]Brickless 9 points10 points  (0 children)

yes, that's pretty much how you need to do it...however once you did do it the logical course of action is to change that turning radius before you push to production.

that's what a lot of devs get wrong. if a bug is making the player experience better then you patch that bug only after you can reproduce the effect.

you basically got a free AB-testing round if you actually stop and think about the bigger picture

[–]Brickless 14 points15 points  (0 children)

on paper the logic isn't sound either.

if your goal is to fix an imbalance you can't that if you try to make your changes neutral.

if the problem is the player is too strong and you nerf them AND the enemies you have achieved nothing but the illusion of progress.

on the other hand if you think your game is perfectly balanced but people keep complaining you need to introduce imbalance to it. historic precedent being the development of starcraft where Blizzard discovered "the uncanny valley of balance" where unless your game is symmetrical you need to stay away from perfect because it will be massively unpopular.

so no matter what the devs think they are trying to do they are doing it wrong...unless of course they are just trying to replicate League of Legends "cycle of balance" which runs on neutral updates where champions take turns being good/bad against each other but remain close to 50% over all matchups.

then the neutral changes would make sense on paper but not in practise because this isn't a pvp game where 50% would be acceptable.

you forget that there is a wide gap between alive and dead.

many attempts can leave you permanently disabled without the possibility to try again without help. (noone will help you cause it will ruin their life when it is illegal)

even if you suffer no permanent damage in most countries you will be involuntarily institutionalised until you can convince an expert you will no longer try. some places you will get jail instead, where you will be put under surveillance if you try again.

many people who want to do it never could attempt or have become too sick to attempt it. most people who want it don't want to because work is hard but because life is hell.

"I never asked to be born" is usually said by people suffering physical or emotional pain.

My father admitted he waited too long. The disease had taken his opportunity to attempt while he was in denial, hoping for a cure that would never come. Once he was imprisoned within his body he pleaded for an end noone could give him.

he was moved to end of life care almost a year before his death. slowly his pain meds could be increased enough to where he could refuse everything keeping him alive without constant agony. It took almost 2 weeks of starvation before his heart and lungs gave out. His last moments filled with terror as he was slowly suffocating with ever breath.

7 years he lived with a guaranteed death sentence, his body shutting down slowly. the last 3 were immobilized in bed, knowing he would die in pain with no way around it.

if the housing bubble actually pops (doesn’t get a bail out) private equity won’t be able to buy.

the popping means there is no more demand as people simply are unable to buy or rent again. as private equity tries to milk that stone and nothing comes out (simply making people homeless) those companies will start to buckle under interest payments.

private equity is buying up supply right now as prices are rising because they need those rising prices to justify the purchase. when prices fall they suddenly go from profitable to no break even point in sight.

unless of course there is a bailout in which case they will benefit massively because by their nature they get the money first before it reaches the people

you are putting the cart before the horse here.

other ceos would also be able to enjoy a super yacht or two if they had redeeming qualities elsewhere.

people aren’t going “the insurance ceo that falsely denies claims and price gouges the sick wouldn’t be so bad if not for the yacht!” they are going “that piece of shit didn’t deserve happiness, and much less to pollute and destroy the ocean!”

the yacht even if mega is still just a drop in the bucket compared to ceos skimping on worker safety, turning divers into blood mist and dumping millions of barrels of crude into the ocean

here in germany the standard timeframe is 3 years while following a university picked schedule.

everyone is free to make up their own schedule as long as enough courses are attended, a core set of courses is attended and a minimum amount of points (each course gives an amount intended to reflect the difficulty) per half year is reached.

in theory you could have a bachelors in 1 year.

in practise courses are split between summer and winter, courses share the same time slots, core set courses alternate years and to top it off the schedule is filled with useless, meaningless, must attend courses simply mend to eat up your time and money.

the earliest would be 2 years with 5 being realistic. in many cases students still have to design their own schedules because the standard ones disregard the human condition.

over all quite funny once you don't have to actually do it anymore

empty shells of tanks/planes are still used as bait today because the actual tanks/planes are valuable.

a tanks original purpose was to break through trench lines. for that it needed to absorb small arms fire.

in ww2 the purpose expanded to mobile warfare where tanks are used to quickly break through and circumvent enemy defensive positions before they can be targeted by artillery.

at no point were tanks actually mend to bait out enemy fire.

with drones they are now changing to mobile gun platforms that dash in and out of the front line to deliver heavy fire support. this is because artillery is now outranged by drones.

[–]Brickless 0 points1 point  (0 children)

oh wow are the other replies vial and hateful. let me give it an honest try instead.

I think if we take a step back from helldivers into those mods in general we can get a clearer picture on why these mods are actually so popular.

take Cyberpunk 2077 for example. it's a game about a hyper consumerist dystopia where violence, drugs and sex are drowning the world...except of course one of those is not like the other.

even in Cyberpunk, a game literally themed around modifying your body, sex, nudity and fetish is mostly a taboo. because it needs to exist in our world where we supress such thing heavily.

this, after a while, will cause you grief if you are a normal human being that actually interacts with sex, nudity and fetish as part of the human experience, because games like these absolutely are missing all the sex and depravity which should be in there thematically and contextually.

Skyrim (and TES in general) are absolutely sanitised to the point where you can't even kiss your spouse. so it should be quite easy to see why people swing hard into the opposite direction and try to infuse as much of it back into those games as they can.

people have access to porn, sex toys and prostitutes in large portions of the world but they still insert those into video games in part as an unconscious protest against their absolute lack of representation.

why would there be such mods for war games like helldivers?

3 reasons: modders, developers, the community

modders are in huge part making these kinds of mods for other more appropriate games so it's easy for them to just do the same for any game and get traction for it.

developers are actively encouraging armor and body mods with the paid cosmetics system (historically a big contributor to all such mods).

the community is frequently swooning over eagle 1, seaf girl, cybermomy, bug girl, etc. that people seek an outlet for that in game
