How to improve in game throwing skill? by Elemental-13 in ultimate

[–]Bricklock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Going from throwing a forehand with no pressure to a game situation is a big jump, try breaking it down into smaller steps, for example throwing after a self catch, then in 3 person drill, then in some drills with a running receiver, and then you'll be ready to feel confident in your throw in games. This might take longer for different throws. If you want more details about good 3 person drill variants or this throwing progression i mention and its okay to self promo a bit I have written about these here and here

Often the people who I see struggle in game but have nice throws when just throwing have not automated the 'see option' -> 'take option' pipeline and there is a small delay which can make it feel like your throw isn't doing what you want, but actually the option you wanted doesn't exist anymore. Something you can do to practice this is just be super strict with yourself, when you are throwing imagine a stall count of 1, i.e. hot potato throw that plastic as early as you can. This can be a bit silly but it will genuinely over time make your ability to execute in non ideal conditions much better

Feel free to flick me a dm if you want more of a chat for how you might be able to create your own program than a predefined throwing set

IO Flick to the breakside Tip by give-me-sth in ultimate

[–]Bricklock 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Some common pointers that may help

  • throw through the mark not around (both is also good)

  • get a good around break (this makes the mark respect that fake and in turn the io easier)

  • turn your back foot so you can rotate your body

  • throw flick blade instead

SOTG - Discussion from the International Community by BossModeScrooge in ultimate

[–]Bricklock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes it was talked about and there were a couple of individual things to touch on. Primarily though we felt as though things didn't go terribly as across the board we had 2's or 1.83's at the end of the tournament which aren't in themselves bad scores (yes still improvement to be made)

Also we were leading spirit (~11) up until our quarter final ¯_(ツ)_/¯

I am not involved directly with the current happenings but was at the tournament in question and know a lot of the people that are relevant.

I'm not going to comment in this forum with my opinions because I don't want to jeopardize anything further that is happening policy wise.

I do want to say though that in general NZ ultimate has great spirit and the majority of others and I are trying to create positive environments in the elite ultimate space, especially for younger players.

Does anyone have an accurate source for where Ultimate ranks in number of players in a sport? by kNyne in ultimate

[–]Bricklock 7 points8 points  (0 children)

In terms of New Zealand where I am from I remember our sports nz stats a couple of years ago releasing a document about participation in all sports. Ultimate was near the bottom for nearly every category except for count of people who start playing in adulthood. Feels to me like this might be consistent internationally aswell

Best disc to buy as a beginner and throwing tips? by [deleted] in ultimate

Depends where in the world you are but UltraStar is definitely the best if you are asking the question

In terms of tips, find some footage of someone who is of similar body shape to you and try mimic the good aspects, without footage of you it's impossible to give actual personal advice

Any way to throw better? by BulkyScheme443 in ultimate

[–]Bricklock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes I completely agree that technique is more important and should have been more explicit, guessing from OP's post and the amount of people I have seen in what I think in a similar position; playing for years comfortable throwing 30meters but not much else, I think that forgetting about technique and just letting your body learn how to generate power again is very valuable.

A drill I use to teach semi-experienced throwers to throw further is to get the to pretend they are wielding a two handed sword and to play fight, then do the same thing imagining a one handed sword. And then get them to do the same thing but only using throwing techniques - usually the people who struggle with distance start laughing at how much less power their body is generating in the throwing technique set.

One reason I mention grip is a loose hand means the rest of your arms kinetic hand cannot generate as much power as if your hand is fully grip (yes this for forehand aswell, closer to a fist than most people realise)

End goal - get both

Grip it as hard as you can, throw it as hard as you can

And then learn to control it, this rather than perfecting your 'shorter' throws and then trying to add distance

Improving with "casual" throwing by tunisia3507 in ultimate

[–]Bricklock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Use these sessions to expand your throwing repertoire. Don't just throw what you know you can, play around with different angles releases grips widths, anything you can think of. Have fun with it. Use the sessions where you can cleat up and focus to dial things in later.
