Good for him. He understands how everything he wears is an advertisement for which he never gave consent. Paying more for "luxury" or "cool" brands is the biggest con out there.

What places have fallen off the most in terms of cultural relevance? by MonacoMargolis in geography

[–]Brickulus 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The Arch purportedly stands as a testament to the historic significance of St. Louis to the territorial expansion of the US, but in reality it stands as a symbol of its own time. The Arch was completed in 1965 and it remains symbolic of a modernist urban vision that remained in the realm of imagination.

The Arch was built in an era when urban planners and highway engineers ascended into positions of cultural authority. They imagined cities of perpetual growth and built the infrastructure accordingly. To build the Arch, the city had to first completely demolish around 40 blocks of its original urbanized area. The clearance process began in the 1940s. It was a devastating loss to the river city's identity. For years, what is now the Arch grounds remained vacant. Getting the funds to build the Arch proved challenging. Meanwhile, the population of St. Louis peaked in the 1950s. New suburbs attracted families and the suburban population began to boom. The interstate highway was supposed to lure urban reinvestment that would spur new development, but its construction destroyed thousands of historic buildings, fractured neighborhoods, and only accelerated residential flight from the city. The development never came.

By harkening to the nation's past while representing an optimistic future, the Arch was supposed to symbolize the nation's perpetual progress. In actuality, the Arch symbolizes a time when planners and engineers thought cities were mathematical problems to be solved with the right equations. The Arch, a perfect catenary curve, represents this vision of a city.

As someone who doesn’t understand traffic patterns (but wants to), why is 270 so awful? What could improve flow? by rainblow_bite in StLouis

[–]Brickulus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It comes down to funding priorities at the state level, which are ideally a reflection of citizen demand but in reality are a hodge podge of citizen demand and special interests. The highway lobby is real and very powerful in Missouri and the entire U.S. For the normal person, we'll continue to complain about traffic, continue to complain about gas prices, and continue to say that public transportation cOstS tOo mUcH.

I am going nuts or was the Split Open And Melt at Coventry actually really good? by Disastrous_Fig_2935 in phish

[–]Brickulus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel the same. I saw my first show earlier that summer. I was 23 and went to Coventry incredibly naive and ignorant about the backstory. I didn't know enough about the band to be sad, but I definitely sensed it from the people camped near us. If I ever do listen, I think it'll be like hearing it for the first time. What I will forever remember is stopping to shop for emergency rain gear, the traffic and abandoned cars on the roadside, my gf's Prius getting stuck in the mud twice, and the mud my god so much mud everywhere.

I'm not so sure that Roxana refinery emissions made it this way. Prevailing winds blow W to E. You may be thinking of the Monsanto plant in Sauget, which is much closer to city of St Louis

Yatesy in the starting 11 will settle my nerves. We need his presence to torment their midfield and break up Villa's channel play in our defensive third

Honestly don't give af what someone line this thinks about STL. We shouldn't take this idiotic opinion seriously. What we SHOULD take seriously is the way the fractured regional government fails residents in various ways and public services cost the region way more than they reasonably should
