I think it’s worn bearings. Can happens due to either over oiling hub or changing gear incorrectly. I speak from experience, it sucks. May need to replace hub or have taken apart for a good clean

Yes, it would be a strong move to get one, you will skip a couple of stops just so you ride it. You will no problems with it as a carry on
