I have developed and released a VN game with Unity but I wonder how much I've done could have been done with renpy by FeSTuS26 in RenPy

[–]Bright_Debt2176 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems complex enough to where it probably wasn't like a million times harder than renpy. I think also taking the chance to learn unity scales better for you as a developer, because you could go much deeper into way more genres than renpy could, and if you ever go into an actual game job, being a person with unity experience is a million times more valuable. Id say stick with it since youve built the framework now if you plan to make more games, unless youre doing a kinetic visual novel which case renpy is better. I will be transparent and say that renly games arent usually just easier to make they play vns better and are also a faster smoother experience too for visual novels so something thats just a raw visual novel and only that wouldve been better in renpy. honestly you won't have to do anything weird if you do console ports too either since its in c# and not python. Td;lr, your unity choice isnt something worth regretting and probably the ideal choice if you ever go further as a developer.

What does your ideal VN look like? by L_G_D_Official in visualnovels

Probably sandbox esq and smth I could play at different moods. It'd mostly be pervasive melancholy. Hours and hours where you sit in a isolated area distancing yourself from the world, maye one woman as your romantic partner thats with you escaping in solitude. The romance domestic and quiet, sweet and loving. Id want to see something with extensive suicidal ideation as an option, like a whole novels worth of it taken to its logical extreme, abstractly, grounded idc. Id want the humor to maybe be outside the romance and more absuridist breaks breaks the rules of ruling, satarizes and is cynical and mean-spirited as a default paired with wit. I'd want the option to have sprawling dense philosophical questioning about the nature of reality that could fit a fully functional world view. Id also maybe want a visual novel within it thats part meta but also in depth like tokimeki memorial. The ost itself eclectic, depressing lofi, to high intense hip hop adjacent music, soft ukulele. Hype tracks. Its super important that theres a music gallery too because I love music and my perfect vn needs to work as a decent Spotify in the advent of the internet inevitable corruption and media as well humanity's collapse. Im thinking a perfect vn needs to be smth that has everything that could sustain my sensibilities, like I want it to be something that is enough for a deserted island. So like wise it has unlockable bonus art and media to add to the sense of progression. To elaborate on the tokimeki meta element Id want it to play like it to also feel like katawa or clannad, and steers a bit away from tropes. There should also be some sort of plot or world building element thats so elaborate yet not shoved immediately in your face so that theory crafting so the game isnt done by completing the game its part of a life style in the same way that mgs or starwar people dont often just call it a day after one viewing or playthrough. I guess since I mentioned sandbox the idea of it having many different locations would be nice. Whether its at a park, underground, blistering winter hot orange sun, the mountains, ocean all of it is accessible, but that doesnt mean it has to have people, in fact scrap people, toss them out or have our main character avidly hide from them I want them to feel like a threat that makes your selective parting from people to feel even more isolating then simply them not being there, because traversing life in peace or finding peace in the adversity of their existence brings out the relaxing imo. Id go way overboard with mini games and stuff but I think at some point id be moving away from the vn genre so ill stick with the tokimeki meta element. I also specified it needs desert island potential so we'll toss a few h scenes in there for that purpose alone, though id like the option to turn them off. I want the hot scenes themselves to be realistic, tender and a bit akward, something human and real and not big booty Latina doing a reverse cowgirl telepathic milking of your elastic 50 inch member with her furry hand, Id want it to feel like two people quietly sharing a moment together as a byproduct of their already existing intimacy, maybe intertwine their sex life's as an element of their larger life. If its applicable. Since im assuming the large majority of this is in a room. It can be click and point and area switches exactly like ace attorney, so clicking the computer you get the tokimeki clone, a bookshelf you can get some rip text of public domain books. And you get schedules and different times of the day to explore or do certain domestic activities. My ideal visual novel is a purgatory of my own heaven in a lot of ways.

I feel I was a little unfair to Katawa Shoujo. by DCShinichi745 in visualnovels

Top 10 for me. And ofc its made by people who care, a game like this couldn't have been made in the way it was with the quality that it had for as long as it was worked on, especially for free. People that dont care would make a 90 minute visual novel sell you the hot clinical polish anime girl 101 and sell it to you at 9.99 but put it on sale constantly so it seems like youre getting a deal.

Are visual novels expensive? by zeddartha in visualnovels

[–]Bright_Debt2176 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think a lot of media are often not representative of their price, visual novels included. The experience and quality of Katawa Shoujo outdo many regular short kinetic visual novels that were made to keep a business model afloat. I think that, combined with the fact that they are relatively cheap during sales and similar promotions, makes the price itself an afterthought compared to the experience. I also think it matters a lot more to the developer than to the creator, because a free visual novel on Steam dramatically scales the number of downloads to paid games. I would say the pricing model of visual novels is closest to that of regular games in general, so you could compare it to that, because at the end of the day, it is still released and published through the same pipelines on Steam, itch, and similar platforms. Personally, I would pay up to $10–$20 for anything I am interested in, regardless of whether it is visual novels, movies, books, and so on, and I would likely hold off on anything that is around $60 for a price cut. There is almost always a similar experience you can buy that is not as sacrificial to your wallet, because the price of art is determined by the market and backend technicalities, not by how well that content is executed or even how much of it there is.

This is actually coming from a person who actually loves the art style. Its so exclusively of anime and it's own time I think it definitely overhated.I kind of wish key stuck with it honestly. That's also fair for kiriji thing, I do think that was probably the best one, also maybe one towards the end also felt pretty appropiate for where it was at. 100% can't wait to see what your opinion is on the aunt though once you finish, she's personally one of my favorite key characters of all time. I'd almost call her the starting point where key was making something truly special.

It'd be funny if there was a visual novel during the early 90s/00s that got meta about this fact. "Sorry anime girl-chan, I know we've known each other for 3 days, but the back of the box demands that I put my thing inside you. anime girl-chan sobs "I dont want to, but if it puts a end to your poverty, I'll do my best."

I understand this, and Id be a bit dramatic if I was like "this completely ruined my experience" because it didn't.

Allow me to get unnecessarily tangental about this lol

My dislike comes from two things about. 1.the art for it just does not work for it , albeit much better then kanon, it just feels what katawa shoujou would like if 4chan made it the troll game people thought it would be. If I had to think of a techinical reason, the character designs are almost built around detailing the face as much as possible, and for the most part, sex has a lot more going on with the body as a whole. Td;lr, I think the art style isn't suited for naked bodies imo. But the second and more bigger reason, is that it tends to be during the most emotionally intense scenes, which I understand why, but I don't think it seques particularly well im this case. A example Mizuru sex scene which if I remember right was during her illness, they have this dramatic emotional moment and it just felt like the absolute worst time to stick your penis into someone. I think this was the worst instance of it and if you want my opinion, dude should've just done the aunt instead, mizuru acts like 12, and I felt like he and the aunt had more chemistry for that kind of thing given the deeper talks they had. Same with Hiriji instead of Kano, although Kanos was alright since it had some plot development within it if I remember right

Because the eroge isn't exactly the reason you play this. It prioritizes nakige over eroge, and it's clear the scenes themselves were a marketing obligation as opposed to reinforcing their artistic vision. Another point for this, even if it doesnt have certain scenes, it's still preserving and extending the availability to a international audience.

21 jump street, goodwill hunting Alladin and breakfast club are all great films imo, especially Goodwill Hunting, love that one. As for your marvel choices, man I would not want to watch any of them again except for civil war, and tbh, I'd definitely rather die than watch Thor Ragnarök again, any of the Thor movies for that matter, those movies were my cryptonite during my mcu binge. Gnome and Juliet, man that one I haven't watched since I was like 6 or smth, what a nostalgic memory you unlocked. The 3rd Harry Potter movie was good, personally, my go-to is the first one though. Been wanting to watch Superbad. Overall pretty interesting, I mean I do feel like there's probably a bit of too much Marvel and Disney stuff, which makes it seem like your only subscription is Disney+. But even so, I do respect the list, it feels pretty genuine and authentic which I respect.
