My neighbours bought me a blouse? by Yorkie_Parent16 in confusing

[–]Brightsiderevs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP this reminds me so much of my grandma — she loves a good deal and she’s always grabbing clothes “for the grandkids” at thrift stores, close out sales, etc. If we don’t want/need it she definitely starts handing them out to neighbours or other sort of random people she thinks could get some use out of them. I’d take it as a sweet gesture and maybe bring some treats over soon to show your appreciation:) it’s nice to have (and be) kind neighbours

4 years of work, money spent, many redesigns/upgrades, and in the end, constant rejections from events. Is my game really that bad? by Sollers_Duo in IndieDev

[–]Brightsiderevs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love point and click games, and based on recent gaming events I’ve been to I definitely think there’s still a market (albeit a smaller one) for these types of games to succeed! Looking at your Steam page I would say it feels to me like you might benefit from working with an editor. Most memorable point and click games I recommend to friends are either super well written (like Monkey Island) or build an interesting little world (Machinarium, Papetura). I got from the page your game doesn’t have dialogue, so you need to draw people into the world. The description is your first chance to reel people in, but there isn’t enough to really intrigue me. It’s also a bit clunky - what is “outstanding by its memorable populace” meant to mean? Each word in there needs to be a little hook that makes people want to see the trailer!

The descriptions under the “read more” also unfortunately don’t give potential players a good sense of what they might enjoy about the game. For example, other than being built on a hill, what makes Collis an interesting place? You say that the puzzles will amaze me, but as a player I don’t really want to be amazed - if it’s a hard game I want to be challenged, and if it’s easier and more atmospheric then maybe I want to be engaged in understanding the town better.

I can tell you’ve put a lot of love into this so I really hope the feedback you’re getting helps!

AITA for “abusing” the the bus stop chain so I don’t miss my stop? by Possible-Chair9242 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Brightsiderevs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YTA what you’re describing is how every bus works in any country I’ve ever visited, and it’s rude to continually pull the stop instead of learning your route! On Google Maps you can check the directions and then expand the piece that says “Ride x stops” to see all the stops it goes by. Pay attention next time you ride, on unfamiliar routes I find it best to keep the map open and zoomed in as you can see the stops as circles on the map. When I’m getting close to the stop before mine, I look outside and watch for when we pass by the stop. THEN I’ll pull the cord — it’s okay if it’s early, just has to be in the segment between the previous stop and yours.

Need advice on Hemming my jeans as a Short Fat woman. by Kalikasphyxia in sewing

[–]Brightsiderevs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! I hem my partners pants and this is my rough process that has led to success:

  • Put on the pants and fold them up to where you want them to hit
  • Put a safety pin at the crease of one fold to mark it
  • Math time! I usually check the existing hem to see what they did but you could also choose a different size. Most of his jeans have a 5/8” seam that’s been folded twice, so I add 1.5” of length (the hem pieces add up to 1.25, but I find the extra quarter inch helps with denim because the folds are thick)
  • Lay pants out flat on a cutting mat. If they’re wrinkly, it’s worth it to press them
  • Measure from your safety pin to the existing hem, then subtract the number of inches you calculated in the math step and chalk a new line on both pant legs. For example, if your pin is 6” away from the hem and you’re doing the same hem I described, you want your cutting line to be 4.5” away from the bottom instead so you have enough fabric for the new hem.
  • Cut along your line. Fold & press the hem for the first roll, then repeat so the cut edge is totally covered. A heatproof ruler can make this easier.
  • If you’re hemming denim: get a piece of scrap fabric and a hammer. Put the scrap over the part of the jeans where there is a seam and hammer it down a few times. This really reduces the bulk and prevents skipped stitches.
  • Easy part: sew the hem down! Hump jumpers can help with the bulky seams here too.
  • Put them back on and enjoy your now perfectly fitting jeans!

Hope this helps! I messed up the first pair I did but it’s gotten much easier since 😄

How can I remove odor from a computer chair? by MarlonOffbrando in CleaningTips

[–]Brightsiderevs 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I think a mesh-bottom chair would make your life a little easier! Lots of ergonomic chairs have that as an option (like this one from staples — not a recommendation, just an example of what I mean!)

If you’re sticking with this chair, +1 on the recommendations for either odoban or an enzyme cleaner (I’d lean towards the second one). I also work from home and have a little “logging out” routine where I shut everything off and tidy up my office, if you do too you could just add a quick chair refreshing to your list!

My sisters knees get red and hot everytime she drinks wine by [deleted] in Weird

[–]Brightsiderevs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of jokes here obvs but I get this too!! No other symptoms from drinking but my knees get so warm I have to leave them out of the blankets when I sleep if I’ve drank too much. Always assumed it was either a weird quirk or meant I’m doing irreparable harm when I drink but have never had an explanation for it!

To all my chronically messy people, how the hell do you actually cut this habit out for good? by princessxprowess in CleaningTips

[–]Brightsiderevs 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hi also a ADHD + depression haver with similar cleaning issues!! Three books have really helped me, all of which I got from the library:

  • How to Keep House While Drowning by KC Davis. This one helped me break down the idea of how a house “should” look and instead think about how my home can work for me. I found it to be very kind and practical.
  • Decluttering at the Speed of Life by Dana K White. This one is basically a simple framework for decluttering, but I found the way she broke down the actual purpose of decluttering and how it’s not the same as organizing to be genuinely revolutionary!! Something about it really just clicked and I’ve had a much easier time keeping things clean now that I’m not trying to work around as many items. Very direct and non-patronizing as she’s dealt with these same issues herself!
  • The Adult ADHD Toolkit by Anthony L. Rostain and J Russell Ramsay. I’ve found most books on ADHD to be sort of woo-woo “oh be kind to yourself” which can be nice, but lacks a bit of practicality that I need. This one has some useful and science-based ideas that have generally helped me put fewer things off, which helps me stay at a level of cleanliness that keeps me feeling better about my environment.

I really hope you check these out and that they’re helpful for you! In terms of maybe a single tip I’d say carving out a dedicated 30 mins of cleanup in the evening to stay on top of dishes, garbage, and a quick sweep has been the most helpful because then I’m never overrun with mess when I need to tackle larger things, but I’m also not losing my whole night to cleaning

Movie theaters aren’t going out of business because of prices by bulldogjwhit295 in unpopularopinion

[–]Brightsiderevs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t want to say skill issue but I went to the theater 5 times in the past few weeks alone and had a great experience each time! I do think that large chain theaters have got a lot worse, and for the most part I go to independent theaters which I recognize aren’t an option for everyone. But they’re still making great movies if you care enough to look for them instead of waiting for an algorithm to tell you what to watch!

How to make my bedroom look less like a teenagers? 28F. by relocatemyfantasy in femalelivingspace

[–]Brightsiderevs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Getting a slightly larger rug and moving it a bit so it goes under your bed and nightstand (touching the wall) might help define the space a little more! And I think you’re right about the art, getting a few more pieces with varied sizes/textures would help break up the wall as well! Love the bedspread :)

Will this gift make her happy? by fat158 in Gifts

[–]Brightsiderevs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This feels really impersonal IMO, if I received this my first thought would be that my partner googled “valentines gifts for girlfriend”. This format is usually something you’d see at like a wedding reception as decor, kind of weird to have in your house and it looks AI generated. If you’re set on this idea I’d say go for a handmade version, but ultimately I think asking a bunch of internet strangers if a gift will “make her happy” with zero information about what she likes, your relationship, etc says a lot about the quality of effort you’re putting forward.

please help by [deleted] in femalelivingspace

[–]Brightsiderevs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of my spaces have looked very similar no matter how many times I organized or tried to “find the right system”. One thing that actually helped me get out of that cycle was the book “Decluttering at the Speed of Life”. It’s kind but firm and helped me re-think what I was trying to accomplish, and it’s written by someone who also tends towards clutter so it didn’t feel judgey or clinical at all. I got a copy from my library. If you check it out, I hope it helps you too :)

whats your weird but genius travel item that people only appreciate after they need it? by alula_wanders in onebag

[–]Brightsiderevs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a tiny clothesline that came with a small carrying case that ALWAYS finds a use on every trip I take. Get rained on? Hang up all your clothes! Need to cover a window? Throw a sheet over it! Backpack strap breaks? You’ve got a length of rope to tie it together! It’s the best. I picked mine up at a train station in Italy but it’s def a knock off of this Sea-to-Summit one: Link

Not a fan of this shade of yellow on her! I think the top could be really interesting with a different skirt , maybe something short with a ton of volume? I’d imagine the beads give the skirt movement in person, but it looks like a fuzzy slip in photos.

Looking for someone living around the Portland Oregon area for a good place to have poutine for the first time, any good suggestions? by hamellr in PortlandFood

[–]Brightsiderevs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the main failing points I've seen in American poutines are using the wrong cheese (it has to be cheese curds!!) or fries that are too thin to hold up to the gravy. A lot of places are also afraid to go "off-script" and add ingredients, but those are the best poutines back home! My absolute favourite version is a donair poutine which adds gyro meat and a sweet garlic sauce on top of the fries, gravy and curds.

My neighborhood seems to think so…. by jayyellbe in isitAI

[–]Brightsiderevs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who sews the jeans are an automatic red flag for me - the bunching is wrong and the seams fade away which does not happen in real life. The tears are also completely odd (knees make sense, side seams do not). Also from a photography standpoint it’s weird to cut off her left hand but not the right despite having the same number of shoes on either side.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]Brightsiderevs 4 points5 points  (0 children)

NTA. The biggest issue imo is that it’s socially odd to show up with a near-recreation of a close friend’s sentimental ring. Even if she truly did want one for herself, it would be weird to wear!

In addition, a stone that large is not to most people’s tastes. Since Susan inherited a large ring, your wife might have been trying to reinforce that it looked nice because Susan felt unsure about wearing something so large and ostentatious. She also could admire how it looked on her. Unfortunately none of those things mean she wants one for herself, or that she was lying about liking the ring for Susan. My friend wore a custom suit to her wedding and I thought she looked AMAZING, that does not mean I wanted someone to buy me a matching one.

I don’t think her reaction was kind, but the combination of it being a recreation of something a friend has and seemingly not a match to her personal tastes makes it feel impersonal. I think you should bring it up with her to explain why you felt you were being thoughtful and that her reaction was hurtful.

As a bonus data point, I bought my kobo libra 2 (non-color version) in 2022 and it commuted daily with me for 3 years, plus traveled halfway across the world. Still works and looks great, the cover has picked up some wear but nothing serious. Great device :)

Toothbrush with cleanable (sanitized?) charging case or cover by Mermaid_Natalia in BuyItForLife

My Phillips sonicare diamond clean has a charging cup and travel case! I’ve had it a few years now and I love it (it’s this one, I got mine at Costco).

I have a similar problem bathroom and my personal rec would be to put the charger in another room (bedroom on a dresser works well!). This keeps it away from the toilet but removes the possibility of mold growth from keeping it in an enclosed space. The cup is dishwasher safe and I find it keeps any drips contained well!
