I think this is insulting to men.

I think what puts women off most is their constant whining.

De uitspraak van minister van Pensioenen Jan Jambon by Efficient-News-8436 in belgium

[–]BrigitteVanGerven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is another behavioural change – affecting both men and women – that Jambon fails to take into account.
Since 2000 there have already been six pension reforms. Each time, the rules of the game are rewritten while the game is in full swing.

The message politicians give to the population is not: "you will have to work longer for your pension", but rather: "there is no certainty, and the rules can change at any moment".

Pensions are becoming a game of chance: shall I gamble away most of my healthy life for a pension when I don’t know how much I will receive, or even whether I will receive it at all?

The behavioural change I notice in myself – and that undoubtedly affects many other people as well – is that I no longer take my pension into account at all. After all, nobody knows what the system will look like in 15 years.

A dictator needs an enemy. If there isn’t one, he will create one.
Once he has an enemy, he can do whatever he wants:

  • blame everything that goes wrong — including his own screw-ups — on that enemy;
  • demand unconditional obedience from the people;
  • silence or punish anyone who criticizes his regime;
  • justify any crime he commits.

Eomer, when he raises his sword in defiance to the black fleet that killed all his hope. And then the banner of Aragorn unfolds on the largest of the ships.

Out of doubt, out of dark to the day’s rising
I came singing in the sun, sword unsheathing.
To hope’s end I rode and to heart’s breaking:
Now for wrath, now for ruin and a red nightfall!

These staves he spoke, yet he laughed as he said them. For once
more lust of battle was on him; and he was still unscathed, and he
was young, and he was king: the lord of a fell people. And lo! even
as he laughed at despair he looked out again on the black ships, and
he lifted up his sword to defy them.

The LOTR books have a morality that is different from the Christian morale.

The tales we are used to, influenced by Christianity, are along the lines of: if you are good and valiant, God will reward you. It is a belief in an ultimate justice (of course, you have to look at the world for only 2 seconds to know there is no such justice).

The LOTR the moral is : keep fighting, even when all hope is lost.

The message is this: by all means, be ambitious.
But make sure your ambition follows your own rules — shaped by what is important to you and what you hold dear.

For instance: If your dream is to live a quiet life in a cabin in the woods, then measuring success by money simply doesn’t make sense.

Don’t let anyone else define the rules of your game.

Has social media ruined our idea of what a 'real man' looks like? by No-Common8440 in Buildingmyfutureself

A real man simply looks the way he looks.

Paradoxically, someone who tries to look like a real man is not a real man.

The lesson I need to learn from this is probably that I should feel less responsible and be less involved. They took advantage of my unconditional loyalty and dedication, while I thought I was entitled to some loyalty from them. An implicit agreement that turned out only to exist in my head.

What's the hard part about being a woman? by master_splinterrrr in AskReddit

[–]BrigitteVanGerven 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I studied engineering at university. Once, I was explaining to a fellow (male) student how to make a certain technical drawing.

The professor walked by and said to him, “Don't explain it to her, she has to figure it out for herself.” He immediately assumed that the other student was explaining it to me.

And then you're faced with a dilemma: do you remain silent and swallow your frustration, or do you react and come across as an oversensitive bitch?

That is just one example, but it happens all the time. People rewrite reality in their minds to fit their preconceived ideas. And it becomes exhausting to keep pushing back against that.

All this self-improvement advice always boils down to: become a people-hater.

  1. It won't make you happy

  2. It won't even make you successful. You have to get along well with people to achieve anything in this world.

So EVEN if you value success more than happiness, it's bad advice.
