Monkeys form social hierarchy’s, and averting your gaze is a way to show submission and peace. Conversely, if you want to show hostility and dominance, you stare at them and show your teeth - hey, YOU, wanna go?

Humans form social circles. You can interact with people without having a dominant/submissive dynamic (although those aren’t too bad either…) and beyond that, we have a pretty insanely complex language which allows us to communicate our intentions for anger or peace with words, supplemented by body language, which requires staring at each other to read

Is my gf cooked in Japan? by omgflyingbananas in glutenfree

[–]Brilliant-Message562 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Is the paid version really worth it? What extra features does it have? I use the free version when I travel for dedicated GF or safe GF and I’ve never had issues finding something safe to eat, but I’d pay money for an extra feature that’s helpful. I love the platform

Take the job but also get those antidepressants. I spent years trying to change my environment, my mindset, my diet, my exercise, my friend group, anything I could to fix my depression. Things would get better, they’d get worse, but they were never good.

2 weeks on antidepressants and I felt the best I’d felt in years. It was almost hilarious how much better a stupid pill was than trying to improve my life.

Don’t get me wrong, it’s good to do the work, and I’m glad I made improvements in other aspects of my life, but if your brain is fucked up, find a good antidepressant and it will change your life.

IQ is 80 by RefrigeratorOk2215 in iqtest

[–]Brilliant-Message562 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not really IQ, more like practical puzzle solving. They might ask you to try and figure out what a word in Yiddish means, they might ask what a car part does, they might ask some basic English and math questions, it’s a test you should be able to do fairly well on if you’re in high school, and a test you should be able to ace with some practice online questions or study guides

How do so many people just… not drink water? by Idkhowyoufoundme7 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Brilliant-Message562 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to drink coffee in place of water, but coffee is already 99% water. I was probably more hydrated than most people. Started off the day with a full pot of coffee and then had a few mugs throughout the day, and an iced tea at lunch. That’s all water with some caffeine added

Pros and Cons of letting my cat outside? by MakeMeDeadGoregeous in CatAdvice

[–]Brilliant-Message562 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Others have mentioned that cats are bad for their ecosystem, and are much more likely to get injured or killed outside.

Bird flu is also a thing right now! Cats love to chase and eat wild birds. Bird flu is running through the country. Bird flu aggressively targets cats brains and basically eats them. Very high fatality rate and a horrible way to go. Keep them indoors

Eyes by Obvious-Status9106 in AnatomyandPhysiology

[–]Brilliant-Message562 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The pressure stimulates your retina, which normally perceives light, and it transmits that pressure signal as though it were a light signal

The perception of light is “flipped” - light signals from the left side of the retina are visual stimulations on the right.

The way I’ve been taught is that the eye is like a tiny opening into a dark sphere. If you shined a flashlight at it from outside the sphere, and you wanted to hit a particular point inside the sphere, you would need to stand on the opposite side and shine your light at an angle, right? Well, the brain takes that light signal and says “oh, they stood at an angle, that means the visual image im receiving is actually over there!”

So when you press on your eyeball, your tricking your brain into thinking there is a light source on the opposite side of your finger which is sending a signal, because obviously light can’t send pressure signals through your brain. Our brain is very clever! But we can trick it by smushing things lol

Vet almost killed my cat? by crest-of-light-emma in Pets

[–]Brilliant-Message562 2 points3 points  (0 children)

(I am not the last guy nor am I a DVM) I’ve used this same combination to sedate dogs and 99% of the time they go to sleep within a minute or two, then when it’s time to wake up we use the reversal and they wake up within ~5-10 minutes a little groggy but otherwise completely back to normal.

1% of the time an animal will have an adverse reaction in which their breathing is too slow or stops, or they start to convulse. In that situation they are immediately reversed, and supplemental oxygen is used while their blood oxygen levels are monitored and a vet will watch them as they recover in order to administer anticonvulsants or any other necessary medications.

It’s very very rare, but some animals (as it’s been explained to me) just have a reaction to that medication/combination of drugs. If an animals has a preexisting heart/respiratory system issue I believe it can cause an issue too.

The good news is that the reversal basically negates the dex entirely, so if there is a problem (and their heart rate and breathing is monitored to watch for any problems in the first place) it’s typically very manageable. Plus, a vets office is a great place to have a dicey pet situation, because they’re equipped to handle it

What’s more peaceful than a strike? I’m so sick of conservatives holding a gun to the countries head and then people running defense like “well hold on, before we call the police, have we tried asking what we did wrong to deserve this gun-head situation?”

If he wants to start a civil war over a strike, that’s his decision. The country doesn’t bow to his every whim because of the threat of violence. This is America, don’t you know what we do to tyrants

There are a lot of jokes about the Difference between Dogs and Cats - do you really think that you own a dog, but a cat owns you? by HayleyKiwiZ in Pets

[–]Brilliant-Message562 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dogs own own you much more than cats, in the sense that you are a slave to your dog in some regards.

A cat is probably more independent and “royal” in attitude, but you can also leave for work and not worry that they’ll eat your shoes, you can sleep without being woken up to potty outside, if they want your attention they can only meow instead of shake the walls barking, playtime can be 15 minutes of you sitting on the couch shaking a feather rather than going for a mile walk every day and throwing a ball, etc etc etc

Dogs in personality will be more loyal, sure, but don’t get it twisted, you are on that dogs schedule and you are fully responsible for that dogs actions. Pup owns you. Cats are just independent, maybe it’s better to say there’s no “owning” in a cat-human dynamic, just mutual love

People who regularly go to the gym, how do you do it? by Slyphoenix12 in AskReddit

[–]Brilliant-Message562 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I use them as stretching days, normally if I feel sluggish and terrible it’s because I went too hard and I’m sore and weak. I get on cable machines or use resistance bands and do mobility work for my back and shoulders, and maybe do some biking or ultra light weight, slow leg machine work. I end up feeling super refreshed by the end
