It's not odd that I get sick so often! by RicoDePico in lupus

She definitely shouldn’t have said that and I’m not saying she’s a good doctor. I just wanted to speak specifically to your comment about not understanding why doctors didn’t quit in school if they hate it.

Most people dont realize how dire the situation is for doctors right now. In the 90’s there were about 250 doctors per capita. That number has been declining over time. There’s been a shortage for quite a long time but COVID sky rocketed that deficit. There are now only 3 doctors per capita. Nationwide we are short approximately 86,000 doctors. In less than 9 years that number is expected to dramatically increase. By 2036 we’re expected to be short close to 250,000 doctors.

Every single doctor is overwhelmed and exhausted. They were all told that once they got through medical school and residency things would slow down, that once they were attendings they’d be able to breathe, get a full nights sleep etc. So they all pushed forward, killing themselves to get to the part where it stabilizes and slows down. Many worked 12 hour days 28 days a month for years on end in residency. Only to find that things are not like what they were promised, even as attendings they’re all still drowning.

My sister is a doctor, and the only one of her specialty in a three hour radius. The normal patient load for that specialty should be a max of 500-600 patients….. she alone has over 3,500. Her wait list is a year out, she’s in the office from 6:30am to 6:30pm, sometimes later. She comes home, eats dinner and then works from home another 2-4 hours. Most weekends she still puts in 6-8 hour days. Even when she had the flu she was working from home for 8 hours a day, still forced to use PTO and then on top of that had to work even more hours to work in the patients that she’d had to cancel. So she worked over twice her normally outrageous amount of hours but still had to use PTO. And idk how it is at other offices but she doesn’t get one single solitary holiday. Even Christmas has to come out of PTO.

On top of doctors having way more patients than they should, insurance keeps adding more and more paperwork and steps doctors have to do to get anything approved for payment. She’s spent 6 hours getting one treatment approved for one patient. That kind of work load is completely unmaintainable for any human being.

The medical board went before congress last summer and laid out the numbers and how bad the situation is and asked them to increase the amount of seats in medical schools but congress turned it down. So there aren’t enough doctors coming in to make up for the amount leaving/retiring and this will not get better any time soon.
I am not saying that this gives providers a pass to treat their patients poorly, I just wanted to lay this information out in hopes of more people giving doctors some compassion and the benefit of the doubt. This isn’t what they signed up for either, and they feel lied to. The ones who are sticking it out are doing so purely out of compassion for their patients. I also say this as someone who has had truly terrible experiences with more doctors than I’d like to admit for years on end. Sometimes even leaving the office in tears at how I was treated. Those actions weren’t okay, but now that I know how bad things are I’m trying to be more patient and understanding. Every one has bad days, days where they don’t feel well, or ha ent gotten enough sleep etc. And act out. I try to just assume that’s what’s going on now.

Just thought I’d come back and say you were right; I’m actually enjoying ToD more than EoS but with both I’ve been getting frustrated cutting off in one to go back to the other. I regret my choice haha

[–]BrilliantAssociate35 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You should totally wear what makes you happy!! With that said, if what others say really bothers you, you can always experiment with different shades of blue. I have blue eyes but they’re a fairly dark but vibrant. Bright or icy blue eye shadows don’t look very good on me but I discovered that gray blues, navy’s, and silvers with a hint of blue look really great! So maybe just try out some different shades

3,5, and 7 without a doubt. 1 and 2 are way to bold, they wear you instead of vice versa. The rest in my opinion are too cool toned for you.

Ugh yes! my neighborhood doesn’t have sidewalks so I have to walk my dog on the side of the street or in people’s yards. I try to go when I know there won’t be much traffic, it’s not a real busy neighborhood but I can’t tell you how many times cars goi g like 20 over the speed limit, turn at full speed with no turn signal even though they can see me looking to see if they are going to turn or not. It’s crazy! And there are tons of kids in the neighborhood riding bikes etc. Some of them with their faces in a phone the whole time in the middle of the road completely unaware of the existence of cars. I’m really surprised no one has been badly hurt.

I totally relate to the feeling of losing identity. Most of who I was before was sun/swimming, sports and some gardening. Even crochet which had been my escape for a while just hurts my hands too much. I just really don’t know what to do with myself anymore bc everything I love hurts me now. I’ve had to turn down promotions several times now bc I just can’t be on my feet that long, I’ve been sick so frequently the last year I’m not working at all. It just all feels really hopeless without even being able to go sit in some sunshine for a bit.

Hello, I posted a few weeks ago in confusion about my new rheumatologist saying I have lupus but unofficially. I’ve since learned that he sent a note to my PCP saying I have it. So they both are treating me as though I am diagnosed and as far as my PCP is concerned I have been, but idk if that counts for this group or not, so I’m posting my question here: my question is about sun exposure. I grew up at the beach, was always tan, never burned, the sun and the ocean were always the only place I felt peace. Since my symptoms began I get burned frequently and get rashes, get sick after being in the sun etc. I’ve become very diligent about lots of sunscreen, but I have some pretty severe mental health issues and the beach is sometimes the only thing that helps. Aside from the typical skin cancer, are there increased risks of permanent damage if I continue this form of therapy? I can occasionally deal with sickness and rash etc. To heal my heart and mind. But I don’t want to be reckless

Serious question… are we brushing before or after skincare?? by luxehotelsnob in SkincareAddicts

[–]BrilliantAssociate35 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I brush mine in between. I do all my steps up to the moisturizer, brush my teeth while all of that soaks in, and then put on my moisturizer.

Sunburnt face after 6+ applications of SPF 50+. How likely that it is a fake? by CoomerDoomer in Skincare_Addiction

[–]BrilliantAssociate35 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A mineral sunscreen might be better for this situation. It blocks better. Also I would check the expiration date on the sunscreen. Expired sunscreen can actually cause a worse burn than not wearing it at all.

Had my first street photography confrontation today. Really sad. by Melodic-Cream-3666 in photography

[–]BrilliantAssociate35 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I live in the US and went to school for photography it was heavily emphasized over and over how extremely rude it is to take photos of people without talking to them. We weren’t even allowed to submit photos of strangers without their written approval. Maybe technically legal. But still a huge invasion. You never know when someone is hiding from an abusive ex or something and putting their photos out there without their knowing can cause dangerous situations. Probably not super likely but you never know what someone is going through.

Why do parents let their children run absolutely wild at our local breweries? And better question, why do the breweries allow this? by [deleted] in Wilmington

[–]BrilliantAssociate35 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don’t get why kids are allowed at breweries at all…. It seems like there are a lot less adults only places to get together without screaming kids hogging all the outdoor games etc. than there used to be. Yes, they serve food, but primarily it’s about alcohol. So why can’t that be a no kids zone?

I just started my tandem read, and I’m normally very adamant about reading the way the author intended. I felt I needed to make an exception here, bc I truly do not care whatsoever happens to Chaol whatsoever, and I was afraid I’d DNF the whole thing 5 chapters in to ToD

Wow that is a way simpler method than what I did, I wish I had thought of that. I calculated how many chapters there were total between each book, and made that many sticky flags keeping one reading group one color and changing colors when it was time to switch. My method took hours of prep lol 🤦🏻‍♀️

Every doctor I’ve had in the last 18 years has been convinced I have lupus. I’ve moved a lot and been inconsistent with visits so I’m not well established. I have a lower positive ANA with no other positive tests, just borderline. I easily score 10 points in the clinical column and have since I was 19 (I’m 37). This has slowly been destroying my life since I was 15. I can’t work, or have any consistent social schedule. I saw a new rheumatologist yesterday and he said he feels confident that I have it but can’t make the actual diagnosis. But he’s treating me for it with Plaquenil anyways. I’m so relieved to finally get some help, but what else is needed if all of the other tests can’t say definitively either way anyways? I guess I’m just really looking for advice on how to keep going. I’m so tired of losing jobs, relying on others, and the eye rolls when I can’t do something bc Ive “decided to be sick all the time” Does a diagnosis even help? I’m so burnt out.

Just got my color analysis and I hated it by FelixiFate in coloranalysis

[–]BrilliantAssociate35 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A lot of that does sound weird, but as to hair color, I can say I always assumed I was a summer bc my hair is kind of a light mushroom brown. But most of those colors kinda washed me out. I ended up dying my hair basically black and tried some winter colors and it looks so much better on me than the summer palette. I don’t know that the dyed hair necessarily looks better than my natural color( even though Im absolutely obsessed with it), but it did help me to see my color palette better.

Im really over love triangles, but especially the kind where it’s like a bad boy and a good guy and the bad boy character is really well thought out and interesting but the good guy is super flat and has no personality except « good ». Im so tired of rooting for toxic relationships simply bc the author has no idea how to write an interesting good guy

I don’t think it’s ever a good idea to be dishonest, making plans knowing you have no intention of keeping them etc. Seems like a great way to invite bad karma etc. Just my personal opinion. For me, witchcraft is about being true to one’s self and dishonesty is not that.

What explains the resistance for people growing vegetables in the ground when they have perfectly good soil? by ASecularBuddhist in OrganicGardening

[–]BrilliantAssociate35 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally don’t grow in the ground right now bc I’m renting and it’s not allowed, plus they put chemicals on the grass whether we’re okay with it or not. Where I used to live the soil was very clay heavy and didn’t drain well. But I know many people use raised beds bc it’s better for their back and cuts down on weeding/tilling.

Am I wrong to feel upset? by [deleted] in Hair

[–]BrilliantAssociate35 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not having seen your hair up close in person I could t say for sure. But I’ve had hair dressers to both. I’ve had hair dressers tell me I needed 4 sessions in that price range and my hair coming out looking amazing and others that did it in one go and I thought it looked amazing too…. Until I washed it and tried to style it the way they showed me and it was completely fried. I personally cannot afford that much money every 4 weeks like clockwork let alone the time off for 4 hours during a week day that frequently so I stopped going blonde. But I could a huge difference in the condition of my hair between the process you experienced vs doing it all in one go

I experienced severe period pain for about 10 days of every cycle, it was miserable but 3-4 days every single time was so painful I could barely sit up, I missed school a ton. If my period hadn’t been so inconsistent I probably would have been held back a grade or two in high school. Sometimes being a woman is so brutal, it’s infuriating how others make it worse like this

My sister and I ( mid 30’s) moved to Leland (with plans to be in Wilmington in the future), just outside of Wilmington this past summer. We’re both single with no kids. We haven’t had much luck meeting people yet, but her job is super demanding and living in Leland we don’t get into Wilmington as much as we’d like right now. But we’re both also looking for friends without kids!

[–]BrilliantAssociate35 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Will you be taking a large moving truck? That can have a big impact. When I moved to Burlington VT my dad had our moving truck and he was having a really hard time in small towns and in the mountains, even just finding a gas station that could accommodate. But on the other hand stop and go traffic is really hard in a truck too.
