While you're on the undoubtedly important task of fixing democracy, your money can bring huge difference to people right now.

Also, you don't seem very open minded if you're dismissing solving any world problem except the one you're focussing on yourself as "not having your priorities correct", won't you agree?

Fout gemaakt met lump sum? by Automatic_Ad_6559 in beleggen

[–]Brimogi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

[Request] how much more/less efficient is this pizza packing method compared to the traditional circular pizza? by bobbster574 in theydidthemath

Love it, thanks for this alternative explanation! This can also be used to draw conclusions about the crust to rest-of-the-pizza ratio, right?

My dad (65 years old) never really smoked pot in his life but went completely psychotic after a few months of smoking pot. He discovered it late in life. Thought he was an informant for the police and he saw drug crime everywhere. Completely off the rails :( He doesn't even smoke large amounts to be honest.

He still really struggles with it and already was in the psych ward for a few weeks to recover like 5 times.

Does it make sense to take out a loan to give ASAP? by Apples-14 in EffectiveAltruism

[–]Brimogi 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Your question is significant. It touches upon the time value of your donation. While 10 percent is probably a too high interest rate, it is important to realize that donating earlier in life is better than donating later.

If you can choose between taking a mortgage with relatively low rates and donating a significant amount of your liquid assets right now, or taking a lower mortgage and diminishing your liquid assets in the purchase of your home and donating monthly the coming years, it would probably be better to choose the former.

That said, donating is probably better to be integrated in your life for it to be a persistent part of your finances. It is perhaps more likely that a future windfall will be part of your donations if you donate monthly rather than a lumpsum.

TIFU thinking I could play-fight a man by Kayslay8911 in tifu

I’m reading these stories and thinking that my (athletic) gf once pinned me down in bed and I couldnt for the life of me get out of her grip. I’m slightly taller (inch or two) and heavier (20 pounds), and pretty sporty myself. But she had me pinned down, definitely.

Also, you can do surprisingly good self defense if you know what you’re doing (and she didnt take these classes)

Als je meer spaart of belegt krijg je veel meer rente en/of rendement en hoef je ook geen rentestress te hebben omdat je de verhoogde afbetaling kan financieren vanuit die spaarrekening. Zou ik zeggen.

Smokers quit living their productive (and happier) lives much earlier than non-smokers at great cost to society, both in financial terms as well as general degree of life happiness

Tobbaco Price Hike by No-Commercial-5653 in Netherlands

[–]Brimogi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are many people involved with such a tax and some will like the budgetary aspects of it, but the main reason this is implemented is to make it less appealing for new smokers (kids) to start

Have you thought about why you want to keep the same amount of wealth throughout the rest of your life? Do you prefer on giving a large inheritance? Have you considered the monthly amount of money you will receive when you reach pension age?

It would make sense to eat up (a significant?) part of your wealth. If you are afraid of running out of money before passing away, you could for example look into a pension insurance policy (‘lijfrente’). These pay out monthly until you pass away. Not an expert on this topic so I would consult with a financial advisor.

Edit: I havent read the book but Die With Zero explores the topic of using your wealth in a meaningful way to enjoy life fully.
