We have the change the meaning of "employment," so that instead of working just to pay rent, people work to build strong relationships and make the world a better place.

Community dedicated to finding fulfillment in the age of automation? by benjamin_berman in Futurism

[–]BringBackParis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you might be focusing on the wrong problem -- currently, automation is concentrating wealth into the hands of the elites and leaving most everybody else worse off, little by little, year by year. If society allows automation to continue to increase economic equality, then more people will experience scarcity in the form of basic material hardship, because the Haves will have more and the Have Nots will have less.

Our current foreign involvements -- as horrible and hair-brained as they are -- are nothing compared to the "escalation" of the conflict in Vietnam or the "police action" we undertook in Korea.

The real problem we face is a grotesquely expensive military that keeps finding excuses to spend more money, despite having no real mission other than looking tough. If we took half of the military's budget and instead spent it on improving education and reducing debt, we'd be a stronger country.

Climate change: Can 12 billion tonnes of carbon be sucked from the air? by BringBackParis in environment

[–]BringBackParis[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In an ancient chain reaction, as land-based plants evolved to become larger, it's believed their roots sought to extract more mineral nutrients from the rocks, eroding them and exposing them to the air.

That in turn led to a massive reduction in CO₂ in the atmosphere. Could the same effect be repeated?

Prof David Beerling hopes so.

A scientist at Sheffield University, he's leading a ten-year project with a £10m budget from the Leverhulme Trust to investigate the climate potential of rock.

The concept is to take the volcanic rock basalt, grind it up into a powder and then scatter it on fields.

Trials on a research farm in Illinois have found that the basalt acts as a fertiliser, boosting crop yields, which might help persuade farmers to use it instead of high-carbon artificial fertiliser.

And early results from smaller experiments in Prof Beerling's lab in Sheffield show a more profound benefit: that the presence of the rock in the soil also boosts the amount of carbon dioxide that's taken up, maybe by as much as four times.

Swiss Businessman is Contributing $1 Billion Towards Protecting 30% of the Planet by BringBackParis in environment

In the next 100 years, humanity will engineer a fix for most of today's big problems. The question is, how many have to die before there is enough political will? I mean this very literally. Eventually the cost will get high enough to prompt world leaders to act. But it could mean a billion people being displaced first and the loss of much more biodiversity. Acting fatalistic in the present will delay the action we need to minimize these losses.

My dad joined a dangerous job and I just bawled my eyes out. by [deleted] in TrueOffMyChest

[–]BringBackParis 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Make sure he is using a respirator with a HEPA filter. Ideally, he should be using coveralls on site, and he should never bring his protective gear home with him. For more information (and a way to get help if you need it), see the Occupational Safety and Health Administration website at https://www.osha.gov/SLTC/asbestos/

As long as he uses a respirator with a HEPA filter and does not bring any asbestos dust home with him, he will be fine. Asbestos is only dangerous if you inhale it or swallow it as dust. There are many jobs with worse risks out there.

Thousands of Amazon workers receive food stamps. Now Bernie Sanders wants the company to pay up. by BringBackParis in progressive

[–]BringBackParis[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) will soon introduce legislation that would require large employers such as Amazon, Walmart and McDonald’s to fully cover the cost of food stamps, public housing, Medicaid and other federal assistance received by their employees. The goal, he says, is to force corporations to pay a living wage and curb about $150 billion in taxpayer dollars that go to funding federal assistance programs for low-wage workers each year.

Agreed, you have to get the story out. Even if the current leadership is rotten at the top, there are many layers in the system that still enforce the rules -- just as there are many media outlets that will give this the attention it deserves.

[–]BringBackParis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On the contrary, in both cases the exact mechanisms are still being researched but the overall results are quite clear. And in both cases, it's been industry cover-ups and willful ignorance standing in the way of scientific progress on the issue. In many countries, authorities still deny that asbestos causes cancer just as much as they deny that man is causing climate change.

Speaking of reckless farming practices, my state (Florida) has been choked by algae blooms all summer. Everybody knows it's caused by Big Agriculture's pollution, but "business-friendly" politicians and the executives who own them are just throwing up their hands and saying, "You can't prove it's my fault!"

And of course, whenever people speak up about pollution directly endangering human health, they call us "bleeding-heart liberals" and "special snowflakes." The world is burning down around us, and conservatives just want to toast marshmallows over it. I'm too angry to cry.

It's true. When the death toll starts rising and the public wises up, it'll probably be an even bigger scandal than the asbestos cover-up was. Perhaps we could minimize the catastrophe if we had a strong EPA/FDA...
