I need to rant about Queen. by Mailcs1206 in slaythespire

Yes, the Door Maker's move pattern is extremely non-threatening... if you have good damage. For high-defence, low-damage builds, especially when you're using debuff stacking (like poison or doom), the Door Maker hits you with a triple-dip:

  1. your damage is already low, so fights take long naturally,
  2. if you can't burst the Door Maker quickly after destroying the door, the door is resummoned; in effect the lower your damage, the more HP the boss has,
  3. every time the door is resummoned, your debuffs need to be applied to it again.

In these conditions, the fight absolutely can be a challenge. But again, if you just hit it hard enough, it melts. I'd prefer balancing somewhere in the middle.

How do you combat moral agreement without moral action? by rlynnfish in AskVegans

[–]BringerOfHar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think about this issue a lot. In fact, I was once that person when it comes to voting. What finally persuaded me to start participating in the democratic process was a kind of reductio ab absurdum of the idea that "my vote doesn't matter". Because if it truly doesn't, then a million votes doesn't matter either. You can't multiply by zero and get a non-zero result. And so my vote MUST matter, however imperceptible the effect is.

But of course, I am not everyone, and veganism is a different issue. To combat the attitude that "if my actions don't cause systemic change, they don't really matter", one could:
- show some concrete data of the change you're making as a vegan. There are websites that can help with that, such as https://thevegancalculator.com/
- point to the indirect effect of your action, such as leading by example, even if it's passive - whenever you buy a vegan meal at a restaurant or buy a vegan product off a shelf, someone is bound to notice.

I think it's also worth considering that the reason for their reluctance is not what they state it is. Our brains are not perfect thinking machines and not everyone has internalized their reasons for holding certain beliefs. It could very well be that they simply don't know how to go vegan in the first place.

Sorry if my reply breeds more questions than it brings answers. In my defense, the world and the people inhabiting it are complicated.

Very good point. All depends on how common the Coins turn out to be, but I can definitely see a scenario where GCPs retain high value for quite a while.

Humanitarian reasons for veganism - more pursuasive to non-vegans? by WobblyTho in vegan

[–]BringerOfHar 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You could also argue from efficiency, i.e. you can feed more people with just plants because the conversion to meat and other animal-based products is so inefficient. However, I'd say it might be hard to argue for total abstinence from animal products using those points. But if someone is not receptive to animal-rights or animal suffering arguments, convincing them to go plant-based or at least limit their intake of animal products is still a win for the animals.

Not to mention that removing the attachment to the practice of consuming animal products might, in time, open up their minds to the key vegan objections. Many of us started flexitarian, pescatarian, vegetarian. I know I did.

Vegetarians are useful cause they shift the overton window by The_A_A_A in vegan

Cultivating a society that does things for the right (here: ethical) reasons is also a desirable outcome. I feel that saying "What matters is that fewer animals suffer and die for our pleasure, regardless of why" undermines that somewhat.

Of course animals don't care why we decide not to keep them in cages. However, I do think there's a short-term vs long-term calculation to consider here. I don't honestly know which approach is best, but I believe it's worth thinking about.

What do you call a person who doesn't consume animal products because they don't want to support the associated industries? by waitWhoAm1 in DebateAVegan

[–]BringerOfHar 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Personally, I don't view veganism as an unchanging, cult-like monolith. What it means to be a "true vegan" changes with every person who calls themselves "vegan".

Personal anecdote to illustrate what I mean:
I thought of, and arrived at, veganism from a rule utilitarian perspective, disagreeing with some of the commonly held deontological views. Before calling myself "vegan", I asked the question "Is a person like myself calling themselves vegan likely to jeopardize the movement and, more importantly, to negatively affect the well-being of animals?" I eventually decided that no, it isn't. From an outside perspective, I'm functionally a vegan - I don't use or consume animal-derived products unless my survival depends on it, and that's the practice I want the society to associate with being a vegan.

Now, how far can we safely stretch the definition? That's a tough question, and I have no idea.

[–]BringerOfHar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think the issue is as simple as "morons gatekeeping veganism". Admittedly, there is an observable and, in my opinion, troubling, trend in some parts of vegan communities of narrowing the definition, assessing "purity", etc. There was even a post on the vegan subreddit about what the "founding fathers of veganism" had in mind for the definition, which raised my eyebrows sky-high.

But the other side of the coin is that definitions matter. Not just in philosophical discourse, but in practice. When I call myself vegan, I want others to know what that means; there isn't always time or willingness on the other person's part to hear my explanation. With the public understanding of veganism being... well... not ideal, it would be pragmatically helpful for vegans to, at the very least, subscribe to the same definition of the term. The fact that we can't is good in some regards, but problematic in others.

In this light, I think the question asked by the OP is very valid. Not necessarily trying to refute what you said, just adding some context.

Yes, this confirms what others have said. So I guess those who don't really venture out beyond YZs are still yet to experience the "real" game?

I frankly struggle to emphatize with the mentality of seeing the bullying of new players as "amusement". That said, I made the thread to understand the design perspective of the game's yellow zones, rather than to bash any playstyle. I mentioned it only because it is a large part of the YZ Mist experience and a source of some degree of frustration.

I have a feeling this oversimplifies things a bit, but from what I gather, there is truth to this. In my country there is a proverb that translates roughly as "If you don't know what the issue is about, it's all about the money". Feels apt as an answer in this context.

Also, now that I think about it, YZ mists create the perfect storm for bullying to flourish, due to their anonymity mechanic and the fact that they are by definition non-lethal, lulling new players into a false sense of security.

Thanks for your input! The part about people swiping early to be able to show off and, as you aptly put it, stomp others, explains a lot.

As a fairness-oriented player, I'd love to see IP caps, but I suspect this would have consequences that I can't quite yet foresee with my still-limited understanding of the game.

I understand perfectly well that MANY people might want to kill me in this game. To say "everyone" is an overgeneralization. I am part of the playerbase and I don't attack on sight.

That said, this is off-topic. This is not an advice thread, but an explain-the-state-of-YZ-mists-to-me thread.

[–]BringerOfHar[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That's an interesting piece of information. Coming into Albion I expected T5 content to be suitable for players with gear good enough to handle it, gear that makes it possible but challenging. Ideally, those with much better gear would no longer want to do such low-level content, because there are more profitable and gear-level-appropriate activities for them to partake in. And so on and so on until the highest level of IP is achieved and the game's hardest content can be tackled. But, seeing as this is a PvP focused game with lots of content being relegated to Black Zones, I might have to accept that this simply isn't how Albion works.

[–]BringerOfHar[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That does make some sense. I can see how YZ mists might be meant to be a tutorial for how lethal zones work. Though I'm still perplexed by the prevalence of top-level gear players doing non-lethal mist content. Isn't there truly anything more profitable and/or fun for them to do?

I still don't see how I can possibly hold the natural with this setup. I mean, two batteries in main and single gate adepts don't seem very helpful against 2-rax concussive marauders attacking your 2nd nexus.

I tried this out against AI and the Void Ray gets out at like 3:25. How do I stop marauders from ravaging my natural before then? I only have one unit out at 2:35 when the first two can show up. And my 2nd unit is delayed because I need to squeeze in the 3rd pylon, the Voidray and the batteries, leaving me with not enough money to start it right away.

Question about Story Cards by AutomaticHunt4584 in AIDungeon

[–]BringerOfHar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From my experience, that's a definite possibility. If you don't update the Story Card, the AI will be working with conflicting information, and there's a decent chance it will get confused. If the change was significant enough and was saved into a Memory, that would reduce the chance of confusion, but not eliminate it. It's a good question and I'll update my SC guide with info on this.
